If he is intentionally destroying his art value , so that itโs all worthless and heโs a billionaire, thatโs fucking genius..
If hirst and heni are just greedy c**t , then this is imo the worst art release ever!
Spin paintings are truly awful.. spin prints?!?!??! ๐๐๐คฎ๐คฎ

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by drbf on Apr 1, 2023 20:05:04 GMT 1, To be fair i am okay with the idea of these. Yes i get they are an easy cash grab for Hirst and Heni but itโs not just a signature on a slip of paper, there is (albeit some will say โminorโ) outlay by Heni/Hirst with respect development/purchasing of the the app/widget that creates the image, and cost of canvases and printing etc. One glance on ebay proves that people are willing to pay good money for posters. For example if consider Stick posters (and Iโm not knocking the artist) people paying a fair whack for a folded paster that came free with a news paper and prepared to pay much more for signed version of the very same folded poster - so clearly paying more just for signature. With Hirstโs latest release you get the opportunity to create your own artwork - okay the software is randomly creating images but you get to select the one you like most ie it satisfies your visual thirst or maybe you are someone who likes their art to match your curtains or furnishings or perhaps your wife or children had some input with respect the design chosen and colours used. But end result is youโve selected something you like! Then to top it all, one of the worldโs most regarded living artistโs signs the work - why? well because itโs based on work he is known for producing (and yes not the first to do it) and itโs his latest idea for creating art - so what isnโt there to like about that? But yes, many of you have a point about paying for a signature. However, I see it as much more than that, just as buying a signed book isnโt the same as simply paying for a signature (itโs the whole package, book (content) and signature). I am figuring that if i go for the smallest canvas option then I am likely paying not much more than some may pay for a Hirst signature but I am also getting summit I really like and that I played a very minor role in creating (pressing generate after selecting the design and colours). Had Warhol thought of this in his time it would be in the art history books. For me art is a rather simple matter, I either like summit or I donโt and in this case Iโll certainly be selecting an image I like. Also the work will have Hirstโs signature which is no different to him putting his name on a so called original that his assistants created. Didn't Warhol say "Art is anything you can away with"

After all it is not an edition, so there really is no need or obligation to publish any figures. For every previous Heni release, they have always stated the final edition size. Heni have this text on their website to explain how the Beautiful Paintings edition sizes will be broken up (i.e. it will make the square canvases look rarer as less will be sold).
I really wish people would read the website as there isnโt that much to read on there. ๐

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by its all about me on Apr 2, 2023 12:10:39 GMT 1, it seems that each one also creates a unique title ...and if you don't like the title given, you can generate a different one whilst keeping the actual image. Nice.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by its all about me on Apr 2, 2023 12:18:16 GMT 1, this project is purely Hirst laughing at all the people that laughed at him using "assitants". Not only will you be the assistant making he painting (which is actually a inkjet print) but you will pay for that priivlage. Fraking brilliant. This dude just keeps winning laughing all the way to more castles for his portfolio This is interesting.
What's the difference between a Damien Hirst assistant making an artwork and then you getting a signed print of it...and an AI generated Hirst artwork and then you getting a signed print of it?
Genuine question. I'm trying to work out the answer.

Maybe because assistants have been around longer than ai, so it is something new that may be less accepted / understood and met with more scepticism than a worker doing the pieces under an artist. Is this ai though? or generative art? I'd think the later, which has been around since the 60's(?)
Many artists are just following algorithms, albeit more casually / loosely defined, so I'd guess that this type of stuff becomes more 'accepted' than it is now.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by its all about me on Apr 2, 2023 12:47:27 GMT 1, I have to agree with this 100%. I never wanted to say it out loud. I enjoy Damien Hirst as a personality, but he has to be the laziest f'ing artist that ever lived. I mean quantifiably. I remember this sort of thing from when I was ten at fairs. He upped the spin painting game from there about 10% and I have seen street artists do some wild things with this concept. My kids and I made a spinner 5 or 6 years ago and made some that weren't altogether lower quality. We could have used more dynamic colors...
I feel that at this stage in his career, Damien Hirst's work (due to his reputation and resources) should be knocking my socks off. Instead he is just coasting along until he makes it to the great unknown using advanced printers and an army of assistants.
Honestly if the algorithm allowed me to make an all white (blank) canvas I would have been interested as then it would highlight the absurdity of paying x amount of ยฃs for a signature. It would fulfill its role as art for me. In all seriousness, I think that's a great idea. Damien Hirst should do this.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by Blue on Apr 2, 2023 14:37:05 GMT 1, Went to Heni gallery today to see in personโฆ
Few notes:
Look half decent from a meter or so away, less so at close proximity.
The more gradial/blurred spins look the most digital in repro (which is a negative for me) with the more painterly iterations looking the best and closest to an actual spin painting in print.
I just canโt get on board with the printed canvas. It feels cheap as expected and almost accentuates the faux aspects of the AI releaseโฆ
Colours are decent, despite my concerns.
Will try upload a couple of pics when I get a moโฆ
In summary Im a sucker for Hirst, and these *could* look half decent framed and behind glass, but much like the Empresses, dont think this one is for meโฆ
My uneducated punt is that edition size will be on the lower side due to nature of project, medium and materials, price point and economic backdrop. Nooooo idea how these will do on secondary.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by Love Is In The Air on Apr 2, 2023 16:39:10 GMT 1, I've really gone back and forth on these and I'm still not sure what to think even after playing around with the app for a couple of days and reading the whole thread on here, which is a lot more downbeat than I was expecting.
My very first thought was WHAT IS HIRST DOING? Up until now the Heni stuff has been relatively cheap for all to own, but printed on metal or unsigned or whatever, keeping it well apart from the more expensive works he makes. But this project is on canvas and signed on the front. I get Hirst isn't painting them and they might end up looking a bit cheap, but the option is still there now for pretty much anyone who likes Hirst and has a few quid or a credit card to own a signed Hirst canvas. Speaking to several dealers, they agreed with me, this will annoy/piss off lots of collectors potentially with deep pockets who currently have Hirst Spins or small Hirst canvasses on the wall. He is surely killing at least a part of the top end of his market? Or annoying many people who might have been considering bidding hundreds of thousands at auction for his work? Feels a short term or risky move to me(but I am sure they know a lot more than me about the art world).
My other thought was why isn't he limiting these to say 500 each size in an edition (even if all 500 unique colours) and charging 10 or 30 times the price? I guess because the way they are made means he can produce tons of them for next to nothing now they have the software....but i think a limited number would make them more sought after.
I've had fun trying to make the perfect one for myself, not sure I have achieved it but I have made a few I like so I'll likely buy a small one based on the feedback of the quality. I also presumed these might re-sell ok if you held for a year or two but then reading this thread changed my mind.....people are right that ultimately the colours are a very personal choice AND the issue is Hirst didn't choose the colours, Paul from Stoke did and this will perhaps help to keep the resale value down IMHO. So I think buy if you like them and continue to slate if you dont.
Lastly, it's an interesting project and app to create the spins IMHO but it comes so quickly after so many other Hirst/Heni combos, you wouldn't be confident about this app not being used on some other project at a later date, or some other signed canvas prints being just around the corner. This era seems to be Hirst just playing the greatest hits over and over with minor variations, or in this individual case, perhaps I am playing the track for him and he just comes in and signs it off as his song at the end...
I've really gone back and forth on these and I'm still not sure what to think even after playing around with the app for a couple of days and reading the whole thread on here, which is a lot more downbeat than I was expecting.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by mojo on Apr 2, 2023 16:53:40 GMT 1, Just watched the clip of Hirst talking about the project on the Heni website... it got me thinking how great a movie about Hirst's life would be if played by Ricky Gervais... gold! Did he "get inside your brain and lay an egg"?

Actually I think that's an interesting point:
"you wouldn't be confident about this app not being used on some other project at a later date, or some other signed canvas prints being just around the corner."
Could this app / software be used to create personal / individual / unique spot 'paintings' at some point in the future?
I've always wanted to own a spot painting and if I could get one with a starting point of around ยฃ1500 I'd snap that up (i've got one of these spin paintings btw as I regret passing on 'The Currency' and I like these).
