Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by cemltz on Apr 3, 2023 19:33:55 GMT 1, As the 23cm version is $1,500 and the 40cm version is $3,000, does anyone think it would make more sense to buy 2 x 23cm rather than 1 x 40cm? A 23cm circle has an area of 415 cm^2...a 40cm circle has an area of 1,246 cm^2...
A 23cm square has an area of 529 cm^2...a 40cm square has an area of 1,600 cm^2...
I have an arrangement of 2 circles and 2 squares in my head. But unlikely to buy. On the fence.

Thanks for posting all the pics. They look surprisingly flat; not like paint at all. Quite disappointing actually.

Thanks for posting all the pics. They look surprisingly flat; not like paint at all. Quite disappointing actually. In fact, they look exactly like what they are, cheap digital prints on canvas! I think the only reason they are on canvas is to give them some kind of gravitas, and the illusion that they are paintings, which they are most certainly not!

Jesus, they look really bad. The sides of the canvas look awful and would definitely need a frame to hide the mess. The best thing for buyers to do would be to keep them in the box for use as investment currency.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by warsaw project on Apr 3, 2023 20:47:31 GMT 1, I canโt get on board with them as much as I try, but I think I now see the idea behind the project. After reading the thread again, I do find it interesting that the spin painting is a random process in its origin. Picking the colours gives a buyer some influence on the design in some small way like a commission. But they do look flat!
Maybe this would have worked a treat at a different price point, much like the Stik project get the family involved in the process

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by stendhal on Apr 3, 2023 21:05:47 GMT 1, My understanding of DH second market : when it is beautiful, it gets a lot of value (virtues, currency) whatever thรฉ รฉdition size and when it is ugly (fruitful, empresses, these things) there is no room for profit. There is no way to find these things beautiful. The only interest might be the creation process involving the first time buyer. But does the second time buyer give a sh*** of it? No.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by Riotcops on Apr 3, 2023 21:08:52 GMT 1, I truly can't decide if I love these or hate these. We'll see if the angel or devil on my shoulder is louder. Ok, Angel's won the war.
After seeing the photos, I must say - they look much better than I expected. That said, they don't look great.
They look like the stuff in the bins at a home decor store. I actually loved the design I made, but already felt pixelated when zoomed in - just no true gradient whatsoever or natural blending which would be reminiscent of real paint.
I predict the edition size will get smaller the bigger the dimensions. And there may actually be so few of the large scale ones that they become valuable in the end. Or someone duped in auction thinking it's a canvas. But most people are gonna opt for the smallest house in the gated community vs the mansion in the slums.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by Acme Thunderer on Apr 3, 2023 22:26:03 GMT 1, Damien Hirst spin paintings have been around decades and continued to be in demand for all this time. For them to last this long, they must be popular with some people for a reason.
This is simply a new guise in the evolution of the artwork and for some collectors, it is an opportunity to add a signed Hirst to their collection for a relatively small investment (compared to other originals that are unobtainable for most of us).
For me, I can still remember viewing the giant spin paintings at the Tate Modern exhibition in 2012 and I would never have then imagined I could create (or afford) my own smaller version.
Everyone knows they are not like an original canvas (and we all know they canโt be), but that is the compromise for creating your own design. The originals in the 1990s were made on canvas so this is a much better option than reproducing them on glossy composite aluminium panels.
If I buy, I will have no interest in sellingโฆ but like them or not, spin paintings will still be in demand in the future - much like they have been for the past few decades.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by esfer on Apr 3, 2023 23:07:48 GMT 1, Am i right in thinking we create the artwork and Hirst signs it ?! Yes and no.
Yes you pick your own colors, and yes you select the type of spin algorithm/ design you prefer. Once those are selected, then you can generate one of a kind pieces, which once selected, will be printed onto canvas and signed by Hirst.
The thing to remember is that Hirst is a conceptual artist. This concept is by Hirst, and the spin designs used are by Hirst.
I think the resulting works are just as much by the hand of Hirst as any other pieces he has created.
And even if you don't want to buy one, it's very fun to create new pieces to look at.
If I had the extra money, I would have a large round canvas for my walls.
Just my 2 cents though...others might think it's just another cash grab.

Damien Hirst - The Beautiful Paintings, by Blue on Apr 4, 2023 0:05:03 GMT 1, Interesting to view as a precursor to this current project...
The above Christies auction lot states: 'stamped with the artist's signature and inscription 'This painting was made by Dave to celebrate the opening of Damien Hirst, Requiem, at the Pinchuk Art Centre on April 25-26th 2009 Damien Hirst''
"During the first two days of the exhibition, visitors were invited to create their own works of art using the machine. Hirst and several studio assistants were on hand to help, and the completed works were stamped..." (Quote from Rago Auction House on the event, not above link)
So, made by Dave, enabled and endorsed by Hirst and his 'machine' (and subsequently sold as a Hirst)

There are not as many spin that come onto the market compared to spot works (as less of them) which is why they are not perceived as popular.
