Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by Blue on Aug 5, 2023 4:38:33 GMT 1, When you look at some of the Hirst editions from the past they really are incredibly produced and things of beauty. The range of foil butterflies, the skulls, the lovely woodcut spots each with their own texture. It really has just come down to Ctrl+P art from Heni and DH must realise what is being pumped out is sub-standard shiny tat. The recent Brian Clarke Heni 'Collages' were really poor and ironically couldn't have been less collaged. Thankfully the majority of artists aren't purely motivated by money and recognise the art of editions and continue to use more appropriate and beautiful methods to execute their work. This 100%

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by cryptoowly on Aug 6, 2023 13:35:17 GMT 1, On Brian Clarke the idea was to recreate a stainglass window effect - personally I think the dibonds do a good job with that. They are more window like, than paper, and they are able to pick up and convey that luminous colour well. Also I think the collage effect comes over really well.
On the WTLMTS I think the main issue is how shiny they are. That said, I think if these go in the right place they will look very striking. They look great in person. Maybe paper would have worked well. Or matte?

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by cryptoowly on Aug 6, 2023 14:18:39 GMT 1, Interesting. What is it about the format you think doesn't work? The open edition limited by time window demand or the dibond or simply the large number of works being released or all three?

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by met on Aug 6, 2023 15:40:57 GMT 1, Doldrums is the only one worth buying
Got to be Blizzard for me
Although envy is a terribly unattractive emotion, I must admit feeling envious about your respective levels of certainty.
Just like at the supermarket, when faced with 25 brands of olive oil, Damien Hirst and HENI are leaving me somewhat paralysed by the options they have on offer with Where the Land Meets the Sea:
heni.com/primary/collection/where-the-land-meets-the-sea
In this respect, abundance of choice, which should at least in theory confer freedom and vivication to members of society, can in practice have the very opposite effect.
__________
After hours of anxious dithering, I finally got my purchase shortlist down to three Hirst pieces, each of them being a definite maybe:
(i) Ha-ha! ;
(ii) What on Earth Were You Thinking? ; and
(iii) You Made Your Bed, Now Lie In It .
By tomorrow evening, I hope to have selected the perfect print to spend thousands of dollars on ("+ shipping and any applicable taxes").

Honestly, I think people had enough and are just tired of these types of drops I hadn't looked at it from this perspective. You make an interesting point. I missed out on The Currency release way back when and the amazing frenzy that occurred for so long after it made it feel like missing out 100 times. I wasn't all that disappointed at first, but all the facets to it with the NFT versus hard copies, the tie-in with crypto currencies, etc., leading up to 'Burn Day.' It was a good bit of fun and engaging even for those of us that were skeptics. Retrospectively, it feels like it marks a crescendo point. Not that there won't be another/ others but, that one will be hard to match.

I missed buying into the Currency, but was there for a couple of the Burning sessions at Newport. I was initially sceptical, but I genuinely felt it was important and interesting as a new concept. I don't believe in the current iterations of crypto or NFTs, but I still love what Hirst tried.
But, it does feel like that was the high-point. Who knows!

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by robo on Aug 7, 2023 20:56:45 GMT 1, That’s a good reference. Stingel was clearly a massive influence for Hirst here. These mountain works have the same black and white treatment, accurate reproduction of photographic flaws, random splattered overpainting. They even were partly made on the studio floor, which this reviewer described as “a cliché at this point in history” way back in 2014!

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by Smokeidaeye on Aug 7, 2023 21:22:46 GMT 1, I've got money that I've been sitting on for my first Hirst, thinking eventually there will be a decent release but they just get worse and worse. I guess the ship has sailed on real print releases and we are now left with photos on aluminum or DIY 80's style spin art. If its in your pocket, get a currency!
I had a currency but sold it pretty early on for $13k to fund some other purchases.
Looking at a few more random pieces right now including trying to track down a copy of "No News Today" from World Aids Day back in 2006 or so if anyone has one stored away...
Or I'll just wait and hope for another real, paper print in the next 1-2 years. No real rush as my walls are currently full anyway!

If you're after a new Hirst print on paper it might be a bit of a wait. According to "Art Collectorz", his last release on paper was in 2016. (Of course I could be wrong here)

I can see the same thing happening again although it’s hard for prints to sit when they are open edition. I have done extremely well with Damien’s prints but I am staring to be very cautious. I quite like these works but I definitely do not like losing money.

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by stendhal on Aug 8, 2023 19:46:51 GMT 1, I do not collect works by Hirst but… I read almost all threads about his editions. I mean I tried to understand why some were fails, some were successes. My understanding is that when it’s beautiful, it reaches quickly high values : cherry blowsome, currency. In this case, the coulourful big formats (120 x 90) are very nice. You get nice splashes of joyful coulours and the dimensions are incredible when hung at the right place. The exhibit at Heni’s is a big fail, they are on too big walls. But in à nice living room, I think they would be very decorative. Furthermore, thé time of the release (mid of August, seriously?) and the lack of interest here should lead to low edition Numbers. If I had not already spent my yearly art budget, I would gamble on these ones

These are basically the same as what he did in 2014 (which the NYT article itself reviewed as cliche) swapping black and white mountain peaks for wave peaks.

Damien Hirst H13 • Where the Land Meets the Sea, by cryptoowly on Aug 9, 2023 8:00:46 GMT 1, Hirst does have a reputation for using and adapting other people's ideas. He's quite successful at making them better. The Stingel comment is valid but I think the splatter works with the waves in a way that isn't the case for the mountain range. Once again improving whats been done before. I think it's harder to make the case for the coast paintings which are more traditionally abstract, a la Pollock but less so. There more colourful and I can see them being enjoyed more by art fans for that reason, but I think the artistic merit is in the seascapes, which is why I asked your view on it.
