What happened to David Choe??, by thesewalls on Apr 24, 2008 11:04:17 GMT 1, His latest prints have been weak (with the exception of London Girl perhaps, although I strongly favor City Girl and CG2). He's put out some seriously dope ish in the past, and continues to show at high profile gallery's such as LAZ, yet his prints struggle to sell for market value. Has his street credit evaporated? Has he evolved into something 'we' or 'they' are no longer attracted to? Were people ever buying for themselves, or just for the flip? He was surely hot for a moment there...what happened? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to put CG or CG2 on my wall and leave it there forever...my Sound Eyes is going to the framers soon...honestly, I could care less about the 'secondary market value' of the prints, I just can't help but notice the decline in attraction to, and desire for, all things Choe. So...what happened to David Choe? What other artists/examples come to mind when reading this?
I suppose I should include my own opinion, which can be summed up as follows: he didn't keep his flame burning strong, the limelight shifted as it always does, and there he sits, content, as a legend in the back seat. Not saying much there I know, which is why I now beg the 'answer' - or more like opinion - from other like-minded, perhaps more experienced, fans and collectors.

Dont forget he's only really been popular over here for the last year.
Personally Id only buy a choe if I could afford an original, scale is the thing that sets his work off imo

He still has his fanbase, indeed someone put up an absolutely cracking original the other day and he is a quality artist, so in essence, nothing happened to him, he just cant command good money on ebay, which tends to generate a lot of text on artists through this forum once an initial image has been talked about.

Would love a City Girl especially the first one with the extra hand finished touches. Not a lot else has floated my boat print wise and perhaps there has been a little lack of quality control in some of the choices. That being said did you see Lee's commission on another thread? That is stunning.

As for sound eyes, i just dont get why that is so popular! It's the most over-rated print out there i think! Especially the red version!

As said in previous post's as soon as the so called art lovers find their prints are not selling for a profit they move on to the next one. I find it refreshing that you can buy his work without the usual bunfight and mass of selling threads that appear 5 minuets after release. Happy days

And it's kinda sad to see artists having to bow to this pressure to stay popular (eg. coming with version 2 of sound eyes and city girl). which is why it kinda backfired a bit.
Dface doing more skulls, insect more warhol rip offs, micallef more portraits of creatures in sneakers etc etc...
A bit like jim morrison having to sing light my fire for every show.

He is an amazing talent that has created some truly memorable pieces of art. The last Laz show was a massive success, the detail on some of the pieces was mind blowing. Did you see Lee's commission ?

People became attracted to him because of the City Girl 2 image but I dont think its the best representation of his overall work. Driving Home (which was probably my favorite print of '07) is a better representation IMO.

Give the guy a break - his show at Laz (soho) was quite

Everything sold pre preview - the watercolours were
blistering.. then the prints came along (not great imho).
Choe's got a bright future - this i think we all kind of know...

Hooker mouse was my favourite, though the other head pictures were fantastic too. I like the idea that some of his work would be difficult to live with. I own two originals that my wife won't let me hang as they border on pornographic imagery, but I love looking at them. Again, a show with figures that are blowing each others brains and suicide is probably not to everybody's taste but it's good that he's pushing boundaries and not playing it safe.IMO Driving home has still got to be one of the best affordable prints out there under ยฃ300. Probably needs to get locked up again in solitary, that should see his prices rise again!

I have always been a fan and will continue purchasing whether or not this board or the ebay flippers bail. The rule always applies, Buy it because you like not because a market dictates value. You never know when that market drops and your stuck with a piece you dont like and paid alot for. Because now you pretty much have to give it away. Which is great for us who enjoy his work. We win on the cheap

At that price range, it definitely met/exceeded my expectations. He is selling paintings for up to $80K!! And thats not even at auction! Its crazy to me but I'm happy for the guy as I've been a fan of his for a while. I just think its a case of him choosing images that aren't in high demand to make as prints. If they made a print out of Lee's commission(or some other large paintings from his latest show), I am almost 100% positive there would be a high demand for that print. Instead, he chose images that were in a pretty different style than the style of his large paintings.

I couldn't agree more. I feel quite strongly that Laz's pricing policy is counter-productive for some artists. Look at Lucy McLauchlan - Laz had a few of her originals on offer at high prices for ages, which I think are still available. She had a spectacular looking show there through the turn of the year with works on paper costing around ยฃ1200 and canvases at ยฃ4000 - ยฃ7000. The next show she does, everythingis half-prce or less, throughout the entire show, EVERYTHING. And she sold out pretty fast, while Laz is still sitting on a nice collection of her work which is totally overpriced imo.
I like David's work a lot, although I felt the Laz print releases were weak, including London Girl. I bought a couple of David's prints at the end of last year, when prices were at their peak. While it does irk me slightly that I could now get the same two prints for half what I paid then, I'm not too upset about it, as I bought them to enjoy, and still haven't even framed them yet. I think the fact that "Silent Dance" hasn't sold out shows exactly who the print buying masses are, in particular POW customers and why they're buying. These are people who recently got burned with the last couple of POW releases and are no longer buying David's work, which I think is great and long may it last!

In fact he released at least 2 editions of the sound eyes print which certainly isn't a signal that he's trying to maximize print value. I'm of the opinion that he a supremely talented artist no matter the medium which is exceedingly rare- all the more so at his level. His past 2 shows have completely sold out which is something most artists only dream about - many who have honed their craft for 40 years do not get close to his success. Couple that with the fact that prices were up 4 or 5 fold and he's on rocket trajectory and deservedly so.
He's 33 and been painting all of his life and success found him at an early age. I was recently at his studio and photographed a number of paintings he's working on but I'm not at liberty to show them until they are finished. In my opinion, they are stunning and I think he's miles ahead of most but that's just my set of eyes. Considering both of these were just finished within the past 18 months, I'd say he's doing just fine artistically and that a LARGE understatement.
His watercolor skills are unreal as well.

They are on display only. You can't pick up your purchase until the show concludes. In fact, one from London still hasn't arrived yet and is due today or tomorrow and the one I've got from New Castle probably won't be shipped until 2 or 3 weeks after the show concludes on 4.29. The gallery can't exactly have blank walls for their David Choe show just because all of the work was purchased within the first week.

They're usually prompt about taking down listings that have sold...

Thank you, and I obviously agree. Yeah the watercolors are being framed as I type. I've got some more photos of my visit with him here though the vast majority are hidden from the public as I blocked any photo that had other unfinished paintings in it. In another 6 months or so I should be able to unlock them and they are VERY cool wide angle photos of his studio with a number of works in progress.

That's correct. They never once updated the availabillity list. Those have remained the same since the show launched. I purchased mine about a day before the show opened and even then there were a good 5 paintings and most of the watercolors already taken. They posted works available with what was left upon the openeing and have never once updated those lists. The last I heard (which was 3 weeks ago) the only piece left was "Phillip" which I went back and forth with because it was driving me nuts but decided to pass. I was surpised to see that one last so long.
