No doubt those same people will be first in line to buy the next Condos. What a massive waste of time for all concerned. To be fair, Avant did do a really good job screening buyers. For a release of 450 total editions, some are bound to slip through and end up on the secondary market. You can argue about whether its moral to not abide by the resale clause attached with these works, but a lot of Avant collectors that did play by the rules ended up getting burned on a lot of editions, which during the 2021-2022 peak, were selling at an easy 3-400% premium, and now can't sell for even cost. We do not blame anyone looking to get some of their money out in an environment where editions continue to suffer.

All Iโm saying is you could get those same things for half the price now, and hence be able to purchase significantly more pieces for the collection whilst still freeing up funds for future acquisitions. We sold a Roby Kira bronze and a LY bronze for $30,000 ($14k for Kira, $16k for LY) in 2021. This year, we bought those two pieces for $5000 ($2.5k each) for the personal collection. Of course, if these numbers are completely immaterial to you as a collector, that is a different story. However, do not think thats the case for most people.

George Condo Portrait and Head Print, by demeisen on Nov 8, 2024 19:49:56 GMT 1, Always disheartening to see oversubscribed releases at very reasonable price points being flipped inside the resale agreement. I know a lot of people missed out on this, that would have cherished it. Eitherway, I guess I don't blame you - it's your business, but I am disappointed in the seller. Hope it is a fair price, near enough to cost as possible for someone who did miss out. I got one in the walnut frame, and adore it.

George Condo Portrait and Head Print, by DOH on Nov 8, 2024 23:53:26 GMT 1, I'm doubtful there will ever be a COA from AA. They released three hand finished Calleja prints, (that were in particularly high demand at the time), a few years back - and stated that a COA would follow in 2 years. It never materialised. Original emails/receipts are definitely sufficient.

Weโre one of them ๐ An art gallery that doesn't care about a CoA? I will make sure I don't deal with you in the future then. It all comes down to the item in question and what the best way is to establish a complete provenance trail and authenticity for said item. Saying a COA is necessary for every item to prove its authenticity is a blanket statement being that COAs can be faked / copied on top of the fact that certain editions never have COAs issued.
In this particular scenario, we are discussing an item that does not have a COA issued by the publisher yet, and hence, the best way to establish authenticity for now is by ensuring the complete manufacturer packaging as well as purchase invoice and receipts are included - which is the case here.
On the other hand, was this a Banksy print being sold without a Pest Control COA (which we would never do), the situation would be completely different.

Pretending to be outraged because a gallery is selling one of these on, won't increase your chances of getting allocated the next edition worth buying from them (judging by the state of the market and their pricing you could be waiting a while). And the COA is meaningless, no one cares, loads of these have been sold on and the market isn't bothered.

"Loads of these..." "Probably as many..."
There were 450 of these things sold. 450. You find me 30 that are listed or have been sold...and that will be 7%. 7 out of each 100.
This outrage against AA is bonkers. They sell art. They market. They artificially create buzz. The "screening" process by Avant Arte was pure marketing and client development. "Why don't you tell me what art you like and how much you spend each year?" That was not screening to get these in good homes. That was prospecting. That is what they do!

To be honest, I have bought some cheap items on secondary without the CoA but I would never buy an expensive item like a George Condo without a CoA. I'm not suggesting no CoA = fake but I'm surprised some people don't seem to be bothered. As I said people buy and sell multi million pound canvases of his without COAs, there are better ways to authenticate a work than a single piece of paper. If someone is willing to go to the lengths of faking a 27 colour screen print and all the associated markings to the point of it being convincing I'm pretty sure they could fake the COA, in fact it would be much easier. If I was really concerned I would ask for things like the AA invoice, all other emails and correspondence, proof of payment on their banking app, the waybill number and customs documents from the courier, references on the seller from other galleries, auction houses and collectors. No one can fake all of this, in particular a track record and reputation, but a skilled printer could fake a COA.
... And the COA is meaningless, no one cares, ... I sincerely doubt that's true. COAs are great, but notice how PC recommend change of ownership even though they offer Coaโs, cause it makes if easier for all to track provenance

George Condo Portrait and Head Print, by Acme Thunderer on Nov 9, 2024 22:54:18 GMT 1, Good discussion this with valid points on both sides. However, if the Condo is supposed to have a COA then make sure you get the COA. Anyone buying before COAs are issued know they are taking a risk (as you are trusting someone to be around or in business, which is not a given). As it matters to some buyers, then surely it is worth having as not having will affect potential sales.

Sure but clearly some people want to buy and sell before they're issued and I'm aware of at least 10-12 having changed hands, so it appears people aren't that concerned. I'd be willing to take a large wager that if for whatever reason a seller doesn't send on the COA, a secondary buyer will be able to ask AA to issue one directly to them after the 2 years is up, or at the very least confirm authenticity. The fact it's been resold doesn't take away from its authenticity, refusing to acknowledge authentic works and look after secondary owners has no upside for Avant Arte even if the original owner breached their terms.
