Adam Neate Originals, by snausages on Aug 3, 2008 18:37:23 GMT 1, uh, yeah, ok I'll open my eyes and open my wallet
Don't mean s**t? You can take my advice or leave it, but if you work hard for your money I'd suggest you take it. If you don't then my advice doesn't matter...

Adam Neate Originals, by beasty on Aug 3, 2008 18:38:35 GMT 1, I went to the Adam and Ron Show a couple of days before it finished and there were three pieces still available. Can't remember exact prices but I think they started at about ยฃ55,000. only 55k retail and still availableโwow!!! Can anyone tell me how many museum collections he's in? Or at least how many museum have promised gifts coming their way of a Neate from some major philanthropist? How many awards has this guy won? How many museum exhibitions has he been in around the world? If the answer is none do yourself a favor and go to whitecube, gagosian, sprรผth etc. if you got that kind of money. Talk about speculative...
Hmmm, an interesting comment which either assumes that the art at these galleries is superior or is a better investment. If the former then I beg to differ. I'd rather have a Neate on my wall than this: www.whitecube.com/artists/elln_altfest/
However, I would consider this:
www.whitecube.com/artists/close/selfportraits/
but think it will be more than i paid for my piece from Adam.
If you're referring to investment potential then good luck. It's a brave man who would choose the art market to retire on.
BTW - you may be surprised at what private collections Adam is included in. Did this influence my purchase? Absolutely not(esp. as I didn't hear the rumour until later).
I'm a great believer in buying what you like, finances permitting. People I've met who collect Adam's work don't just like his work, they love it and appreciate the skill involved. I'm in that camp and believe his work is getting stronger and stronger. Who knows where he will be in 10 years time. I certainly don't but I'm really looking forward to learning as I go along.

Well la de da! I love a lot of things, I like ice cream and lollipops I like long walks on the beach I like fish & chips, I like beanie babies, I like sugar packets with nautical insignias on them ...doesn't mean I'm going to pay 55k for any of that. Just makes me think your spending your money with your emotions not your brain. Of course if you have 55k to spend on art and you don't even have to consider the completely implausible notion that you might have to sell for a loss one day then you don't reall need to take my advice.
But I can tell you Adam Neate is a case study in speculation plain and simple, now of course sometimes speculators get it right, and if they do in this case good for you.

Another interesting post which in this case assumes you know who i am and my reasons for buying. Firstly, you assume I paid 55k. I didn't. Secondly, you assume I'm a speculator. I'm not. Thirdly, you assume I bought just with emotion. I didn't.
Should I take your advice on buying art? I have no idea and just to assume would be foolish. However you do imply that we should take your advice which suggests you have had success in identifying artists early in their career and in some way have benefitted from it( either financially or otherwise).
Would it be possible to share your experience with us?

Adam Neate Originals, by Cocteau 101 on Aug 3, 2008 20:19:11 GMT 1, Hey snausages - give us the benefit of your investment advice then as you were the one who brought it up - have you had to sell at a loss then. You seem to be very strident in your affirmations so I expect you won't mind sharing your knowledge. And have you been a member of the forum previously under another name or are you another mid summer 2008 expert who has happened to stumble across the forum and decided to share your expert opinion with us all. A lot of the Neates buyers can see something beyond the money but I'd appreciate being enlightened as my Victorian pile is in need of some repairs and just in case I need to sell want to know which items from my collection you think will be worthless in a few years and I'm sure would others. Thanks!

Would it be possible to share your experience with us? 1. I never assumed you paid 55k, I made a comment about Neates retail prices and you responded to me. 2. If 'someone' spends 55k and up for an Adam Neated they are speculating with their money plain and simple. 3. As you mentioned you don't only like neate 'but you love' him it sounds like emotions talking. Just a guess.
I'm just saying that I've seen a few canvases at auctions by the following artists sell for less or similar or not that far above what it sounds like for similar sized originals by Neate are going for. I'm thinking of a George Condo canvas last spring, maybe even one or two Neo Rauch canvases, possibly a Mark Grotjahn, definitely Thomas Scheibitz, Jonathan Meese, I could go on and on...
Now maybe you like Neate more than you like any of those artists I mentioned but the speculation part comes in because those guys are so much more established than Neate is now.
Now maybe Neate will one day be as established as these guys, I'm slightly skeptical but then again I don't underestimate the power of the self full filling prophecy of his investors! But the prices that are being charged right now almost assume that he's a definite but I've yet to see a serious critical notch in his resume.
If it were priced about 1/2 to 1/3rd current retail prices I think it would be worthwhile if you really love him.
