I do long for one of the panel ones. Mose - made me jealous. I can leave the rugs, clothes et al but the ceramics look great
The bizen yaki ceramics are originals hand-made by Parla, and are quite special and unique.
The rugs, clothing, etc. are nice, but something very different.

This one is up there will Calle Luna, Accidents & History, and Geminis as one of my favorites, older-style, more understated Parla works.

The way the international markets are imploding with each day (today is no different) makes guessing much more difficult than it has ever been. If it goes to a private collector, my guess is $50k. If it goes to a dealer, the sky is the limit.

It just strikes me as a very strange estimate. Anyone who has done their homework will know the score and realise that even though times are tough this is an important auction for Parla and there will be forces at work to make sure it goes well!

The auction houses only care about making sure there is a sale. They can strong arm any seller into taking a low ball/teaser estimate or take a hike. They are very convincing with their argument that a lower estimate encourages more and more bidders which ultimately drives prices higher. Personally, I don't buy it, but I can apprecaite why they say as much.
Compound this problem with prices that seem to be falling out of bed with each passing week and the houses are doing everything in their power to insure a sale. Given Parla's lack of auction history, that estimate makes sense to me. Of course it will sell, and when it goes for higher than the top range, well then a nice buzz begins regarding an artist that most have never heard of. Most importantly to Sotheby's, a sale is made. I would do the same if I were in their shoes.
