Lazarides Gallery - Charing X Road & Print Room, by nacional on Aug 11, 2008 16:13:14 GMT 1, I found the place really disappointing: loads of space and not really very much on display, could do so much more with it; for an artistic venue it really showed a lack of innovation and imagination...

I would prefer her to preserve the destroyed birds I regularly have to clean up, instead of this taxidermy of perfection

Lazarides Gallery - Charing X Road & Print Room, by craigf on Aug 12, 2008 6:52:11 GMT 1, The first show was better although I do like the Micallefs. For the first hanging there was a lot more on the walls.
As for covering the rent they don't need to sell to many £20k+ pieces to make sure they are ok ;D

Lazarides Gallery - Charing X Road & Print Room, by Daniel Silk on Aug 12, 2008 9:27:10 GMT 1, I found the place really disappointing: loads of space and not really very much on display, could do so much more with it; for an artistic venue it really showed a lack of innovation and imagination...
When we were looking round we asked a lady at one of the desks if more was up the stairs (above the Print Shop) and she said yeah, just go up the stairs went up to find a massive room totally empty then up the stairs a bit more to find a corridor full of empty boxes then trying to find the way out back down the stairs to the bottom (Where signs said was an exit) to find the doors locked very confusing
Gotta say its a really nice place ;D I can see it would be perfect for some really big show opening parties And I was well impressed with the print shop! much bigger then I expected, and really nicely fitted out
Well done Steve! ;D

Can you name me one permanent artistic venue, that on the inside where the art is displayed, is imaginative and innovative?Whilst both the Tate Modern & Guggenheim in New York may be amazing buildings the areas for the art are deliberately understated to allow the art to speak over the architecture of the place. For me the print shop explains itself in it's title - it is a shop and regardless of whether you like all the work on display it's easy to absorb the work and there isn't overkill on the amount of work on display, all of which you can buy and take home with you. This is it's purpose and fulfills it pretty well With regards next door I'd agree that it's a pretty small space and so always going to make group shows very tough, when you have such a diversity of style from the artists. With this in mind I love that fact that you can walk in off the street and see such variety from some of the leading lights in the street / contemporary scene. First and foremost this is to be applauded, as opposed to be moaned about.
Just realised it's the print room, however again clue in the title, it's a room with prints in it so I stand by what I said above

Lazarides Gallery - Charing X Road & Print Room, by nacional on Aug 12, 2008 14:40:44 GMT 1, Weeeeelll, yes, onemandown, I can...
The FAC (Fundacion de Arte Contemporaneo) in Montevideo, Uruguay. A living, breathing art gallery occupying 5 floors of an old colonial house where the artists work (and sometimess live) and where there are permament exhibitions and all art is on display and all for sale...
It is simply stunning and you can spend an entire day there just wandering around, chatting to the artists etc....
Well, you did ask....

I respect you're call - and it does sound amazing. As ever there will always be an exception to every rule (and by the sound of things a pretty impressive one). It doesn't change the fact that te majority of art spaces don't fit into this category

I agree, which is why for me the best exhibitions are site specific for the artist, and are part of the whole experience. Can's being a case in point. I also imagine that the Spring St event organised by Wooster would have fitted into this category. Let's see what Laz come up with for the Faile show. There are so many more possibilities if the choice of venue becomes part of the artistic process. What would Neate, Parla, Micallef, Faile, Ian Francis, do with an open remit?
