Jose Parla is a legend, by Rude Copper on Oct 10, 2008 9:08:35 GMT 1, i dunno frankie, the 2x2 at the top of the stairs was a close call, i thought the stars of the show were the watercolours, 3 or 4 were quite stunning, the style has moved on immensely, excellent work all round, & another great show from paul & fiona, a word about the book, i was'nt going to buy it, out of principle really, 90 quid for a book is just too much, but after seeing it, & the work thats gone into it, could'nt resist it, i heard it cost £60 to make, & bearing mind the edition size, i can believe it. well worth making the trip on saturday to have the man squiggle over it, i'm not sure there will be too many opportunities in the future, jose is definitely a star of tomorrow.

Jose Parla is a legend, by Wanksy on Oct 10, 2008 9:46:21 GMT 1, Amazing show and congratulations to Jose. I did however recognised and chatted to a couple of people from Gagosian gallery there last night. Even they were not being told the price of the works which seems a little bonkers. Does anyone know any prices (excluding the book of course!)

Been trying to like this (and Neate) for some time now but just don't get it!
Go ahead shoot me down, but sorry, just not for me.

Yup i'm in the don't get parla crowd too... seen one in person at laz and still wasn't impressed!

That's the beauty of art, everyone get's something different from it. World would be a very dull place otherwise. For me I'm not moved by Micallef's work, and have only recently come round to Neate (this was after having a couple of pieces explained at Elms), all that matters with art is that it touches you emotionally and evokes a reaction. if Jose's not your bag so be it. I'd still say go check the exhibition out, give it some time, absorb it and if it still does nothing for you so be it.

Completely agree... i'm not bothered by the fact i don't like parla, and and not on a life changing mission to do so! For those that do like his work... enjoy!

Jose Parla is a legend, by jonpud on Oct 10, 2008 10:55:56 GMT 1, I would never criticize anyones individual love of art or particular style of art, and I agree with you whole heartedly onemandown72. I have waited a long time before posting a comment regarding Parla especially as you can 'warm' to work over a period of time.
Bit like comedy really, i love Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer but I don't get Eddie Izzard, my ex was totally opposite in thinking.
Anyway, whilst I don't really love Neate's work there have been a few pieces I quite liked and I can understand why others like it, Parla however just does nothing at all for me.
I also understand that seeing art 'in the flesh' can be better than on the screen, but for me you have to like the image first before going to look for yourself! I don't like it so this show is not for me!
Give me a room full of Herakut and Micallef every day of the week!

So when we both win the lottery and suddenly get an opportunity to buy whatever we fancy we'll both be happy boys - I'll leave you the Micallef's / Herakut and you can pass on the Parla's to me!

PUD, I agree with much of what you said but I do think that this attitude (for want of a better word) is too restrictive. I reckon that viewing a piece of art on a computer screen is sufficient in making a decision for about 90% of the art out there (especially for stencil art). However there is that 10% that you need to see in person to appreciate - I do think Parla's work is in that 10%.
I haven't seen the Elms show so cannot comment but up until I saw a Parla at Andipa (and an average one at that), I was not impressed and spent a number of months wondering what all the fuss is about.
If you're not willing to go and view a show because you don't like what you see on a screen or catalogue then aren't you restricting your taste development. For me, part of the enjoyment of art is seeing work by artists I don't understand (or like for that matter) as this is more challenging than spending every day looking at art I do like. I don't see the attraction of D*face, Faile or Micallef (I'm in the minority) but I'm looking forward to seeing their shows as there must be a reason that they're so popular and I want to understand why.
