Jose Parla is a legend, by jonpud on Oct 10, 2008 13:18:35 GMT 1, I also understand that seeing art 'in the flesh' can be better than on the screen, but for me you have to like the image first before going to look for yourself! I don't like it so this show is not for me! PUD, I agree with much of what you said but I do think that this attitude (for want of a better word) is too restrictive. I reckon that viewing a piece of art on a computer screen is sufficient in making a decision for about 90% of the art out there (especially for stencil art). However there is that 10% that you need to see in person to appreciate - I do think Parla's work is in that 10%. I haven't seen the Elms show so cannot comment but up until I saw a Parla at Andipa (and an average one at that), I was not impressed and spent a number of months wondering what all the fuss is about. If you're not willing to go and view a show because you don't like what you see on a screen or catalogue then aren't you restricting your taste development. For me, part of the enjoyment of art is seeing work by artists I don't understand (or like for that matter) as this is more challenging than spending every day looking at art I do like. I don't see the attraction of D*face, Faile or Micallef (I'm in the minority) but I'm looking forward to seeing their shows as there must be a reason that they're so popular and I want to understand why.
More than happy to take on board the opinion of someone who has first hand knowledge, and if in the area I will take alook and then offer a more informed opinion.
Think my point got a little lost in translation, what I meant to say is the concept is not appealing to me and therefore I doubt I would like it any more seeing it in the flesh!
Thanks for a balanced and sesible discussion on the subject though. Makes a change from an aggresive slanging match!

Fair comment - and the chances are you still won't like the style after seeing it in person - I really struggle to see the attraction of Cy Twombly so went down to the Tate a few months ago ... I still really struggle to see the attraction!! As someone mentioned recently, it just looks like a whole lot of squiggles on a large canvas (almost child like IMO).
Similarly, although I do quite like Basquiat's work a lot of it has that child-like quality - I've spent a lot of time trying to understand why such artists like Cy Twombly, Basquiat, Warhol have hit the big time (especially when you compare them to the more traditional painters). I have a much better idea now but I continue my quest...
If you do get to see the Parla show, let me know what you think...

Funny that, as I was exactly the same with regards Cy Twombly, so did eh same thing. And was feeling cheated out of my entrance money, until I came into the room with the 9 large pieces that he'd done for the Venice Biannial. Stopped me in my tracks, and stayed in the room for half an hour just staring at the work. Everything after this that he did in the 80's I got, everything pre then I thought was pretty weak, and not for me. I do think that Parla is very much in this vein where the work either grabs you deep down somewhere, draws you in and allows you to lose yourslef in it, or it is just a lot of tagging on canvas. I for one love what he does, the first time I saw his work it gave me tingles down my spine and I was mesmerised.

Jose Parla is a legend, by mose on Oct 10, 2008 14:15:47 GMT 1, I think Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate, said it best with regard to Twombly "...he evokes rather than describes..."
The same can be said of Parla. The work is poetic as opposed to expository, which is funny considering Jose's frequent use of his works as journals.

Jose Parla is a legend, by worlddomination on Oct 11, 2008 12:59:42 GMT 1, Well I said I wasn't going to buy the book at the price it was, as I had said before but I have had to eat humble pie, it is so well produced it's untrue and a credit to Paul and Fiona. What's more Jose doodled all over it for me on Thurs which made it even better!

Jose Parla is a legend, by andrewd on Oct 11, 2008 20:22:52 GMT 1, I went and got my book signed today! Jose was extremely chatty and spent a lot of time drawing in people's books. Apparently he is back in New York with a show quite soon. There was a rather large family there lots of boys under 10 years old ( 6 or 7 of them ), all getting 2-3 books each. They looked rather concerned when Jose said that he only signed books with dedications to named people. I imagine we may see some of these on e-bay in the next day or two.

Jose Parla is a legend, by uksnowman on Oct 11, 2008 20:56:32 GMT 1, Great show by Elms! The book signing was well organised too, Jose was able to take his time and doodle away without a hord of people standing over him. It was nice that he was so friendly to everyone, even posing for pics for people with children!
I wasn't a huge fan of his before the show but having seen his work in person it has to be seen to be believed, I'm converted! The amount of detail and depth of colour was quite awe inspiring. The strong smell of varnish on the big pieces was a nice effect too
I really want one of those calligraphic works on paper!!!
