Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by manty on Apr 28, 2008 17:48:44 GMT 1, Anyone interested in selling judgement day? ?? I have one one with some smears of watercolour on it from a jose parla pigment. I had the parla in a sleeve, took that out to get framed and put the JD in the same sleeve and it had left traces of the pigment. Anyways, ยฃ500. Looks good!
I think its extremely good value for a Parla-Micallef one off

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by mcster on Apr 28, 2008 17:50:34 GMT 1, To be honest I can see why his prices have dipped. I had an Angel Bomber and a Friendly Fire framed and up on my wall, but sold both last year. There's no doubt that the guy is a good artist and they weren't bad pieces, but the two of them seemed to get a little lost amongst the other stuff I have up and, dare I say it, I got a bit bored with them both. The thing with all of this is unless you paid top whack for your pieces and could buy them at a fraction of the cost now, it doesn't matter. If you bought them to keep it doesn't matter a tuppeny f**k if they are worth a fortune or nothing.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by dotdot on Apr 28, 2008 18:43:27 GMT 1, Wonder if the prices for his original pieces have taken a significant hit. ...Doubt it.
Anyone who thinks this guys prints prices matters a jot is slightly mish-taken.
JD is a presence.
Canvas - you'll not see one in auction i predict for a while.
Mic's talent is undisputed this thread on the other hand .....

Not too sure about at auctions but this should give you an idea. The most expensive canvas from his recent Impure Idols show in LA was the Improvised Minotaur, 140 x 220 cm, and it sold for $240,000.

don't get why IMW is gash? The image is mint IMHO, there is obvious differences here between the black and white of FF (which hasn't dropped in value at all), SC and so on.. than the uzi lovers, which are odd but still good and 21st century....well don't know what to say.
Colour or no colour.. ?!

At the end of the day if he brought out some small runs of prints they would sell out, just hope he gets up soon to give the haters the finger. finger crossed

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by Philippe on Apr 29, 2008 1:05:37 GMT 1, Its funny how people worry about the prices even after Antony purposefully did this to the market. He released all these high runs to flood the market and he's been successful. Frankly I am ecstatic about what he's done even after paying a 10k for a MW that I was able to purchase from quickly flipping an LA set and making 6k, it doesnt bother me that it could be worth less because I love the image and I'm blown away by his artistic talent. I can now afford other pieces without having to resort to being a flipper and let me tell you it feels damn good.

Sorry, had to laugh. It feels good not to be a flipper, but flipping got you to that point where you don't need to flip? A little ironic. And note, I don't care about flippers so don't think I am going on the attack. You just gave me a good laugh is all.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by darjeeling on Apr 29, 2008 1:56:13 GMT 1, people here keep saying its a great time for fans to buy Micaleff but obv no one is putting their money where their mouth is or else his prices wouldnt still be in free fall
exactly, people have been saying for about 6 months it's a great time to buy micallef but no one is stepping up. Everyone is too hyped up about the next crash and burn artists (Walker comes to mind) instead of chasing after dead money.
kind of reminds me of a thread a long time ago about what print will be worth more, "all fall down" or "lv child" funny as the argument got really heated but in the end they're both worthless now, (practically) but if you enjoy it eh. I do think he has talent, just like thousands of other contemporary artists but he (and laz) dug himself a huge hole and doubt he will get out.
The most fooked up and sad thing about it though is that Micallef flooded the market because he wanted to. Because he wanted as many people to own a print that wanted at a time when people were paying $5000 for an angel bomber. He did this for the fans and the fans and flippers hav left him hanging dry.
And you can slag on people for buying prints related to value etc. and complain they're not true fans if they don't buy so whatever slag away, but I tell you at keast for me it really grinds away at me when I spend 2 or 3 k for a print that later is selling for 1k. Even of I like the art of course, hard not to feel like a sucker or down about it or something. It's no fun paying 3k for something you could have gotten for 1, that's for sure.

haha dont worry at all I wrote it with the intention of being funny. I dont think flipping is necessarily wrong if you use the profits to buy more work from the artist you initially flipped.

How exactly is Micallef being left to dry? He sold all his prints at the price he asked for right? I think he got what he wanted. No?
Micallef, to my knowledge, hasn't put anything out lately, has he? Where is his fall from grace you speak of?
I'd love to own a couple Micallef myself, but not at the original prices. When they hit $500-$700 I'll pull the trigger.
It's an interesting discussion about how artists don't pace themselves and the dynamics of the circle of artists/sellers/buyers that goes on all the time here. Prices being where they are is a direct result of what Micallef did; large run sizes. Why would you feel bad for him?

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by bobbymeachamjr on Apr 29, 2008 2:40:59 GMT 1, exactly, last person one should feel bad for is Micallef. He made a ridiculous amount of money in a very short period of time - mostly due to circumstance than pure talent. He's talented no doubt but no way deserving his god like ascension last summer. Feel bad for the peeps who bought at 5-10x the price they're at now...

I can't say for sure but I would bet money that he would be more concerned with establishing a strong career than making a quick buck selling prints to stupid banksy forum members. Yet he did it because at the time all of you were tripping ver each other trying to get a Micallef. Now you guys are like eh, I'll buy it when it comes down to $500. WTF?
Again! Are you a total moron Micallef prints that were selling for 5 to 6 thousand dollars last august now sell for 1 to 2 thousand. Why do you think that is? Because "his star shines" brighter? WTF?
You must not be a "true fan" then if you won't spend 1k huh?Why not support his market and why not support other collectors who supported micallef by buying his prints? Of course you won't you're only concerned about the bottom line.

I'm asking perfectly good questions. No need to be rude. Do you think people are obligated to spend outrageous sums on overpriced goods to support artists egos? There is a limit to what people will pay for something. It's nice if you have "make artist feel good money". I don't.
How exactly is Micallef being left to dry? He sold all his prints at the price he asked for right? I think he got what he wanted. No? Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by darjeeling on Apr 29, 2008 3:49:09 GMT 1, You're questions don't really address the entirety of the situation and come across as crass imo. I don't think you understand what happened. It's not the artist's fault that everyone here was paying $5-6,000 dollars for a $750 print prior to the LA show with people coming on the forum and being like "money well spent" etc. When he released those prints at the LA show for 2k they were IMO priced significantly under what his secondary market prices were at the time and they sold out immediately in the UK and pretty quickly in the US so it's not fair to blame the artist acting like he was trying to extort his fans. He accommodated his fans.
There is a limit to what some people will pay??? Well you don't say.... I guess you don't get sarcasm.
But honestly there is truth to what I say. When you buy art you are supporting that artist. You are supporting the art establishment, and you are supporting fans who had the guts and interest to buy work by that artist. I'm pointing out how everyone on this stupid forum likes to say how talented Micallef is but doesn't put their money where there mouth is unless they think they're going to make money off of it. Even the supposed "true fans" of Micallef are still spouting out crap like .."I'll buy it when it drops to $500" Great, good for you. What do you think is going to happen the next time Micallef releases prints and people know that if they for whatever reason need to sell it that the "true fans" won't step up to the plate unless they sell it for a $2000 loss?
