Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by mose on Apr 29, 2008 3:52:50 GMT 1, darjeeling, there is simply no reason, none whatsoever, to turn to name calling and rudeness like this. All it does is lessen you and chip away any credibility your statements may have had(and they had a lot of merit as your characterization of some of the statements and group behavior on this and other forums were pretty spot on, IMO).

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by darjeeling on Apr 29, 2008 3:57:41 GMT 1, you're kidding me right mose?
If you ask stupid questions you're going to get a stupid answer. It doesn't change the argument and it doesn't change the facts that the people on these forums will only step up to the plate when they stand to profit off of something as opposed to supporting art.

no, i'm not kidding. it's just one of my things that I happen to believe in strongly enough to speak up about.
i view it like this, it is rudeness and disrespect that drives away newer collectors/fans, even if it is not aimed toward them. who wants to be part of a 'scene', when intelligent members making insightful posts turn to calling others morons and whatnot? My view is, attitudes turn potential fans into mere tourists.
and the bottom line is, without new blood in the game, there is only so much $upport that the many talented artists we discuss can squeeze out of the existing fanbase.
call me silly, but this is my view on the situation.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by daz205 on Apr 29, 2008 16:35:09 GMT 1, micallefs price drop has been due to too many flippers buying up the 2400 prints that were released last year and hoping for a banksy esq return on their "investment" therefore flooding the market and causing the price crash, personally all this BS about fans not putting their money where their mouth is, is just that BS i have recently tried to buy HFUNG and MWIH but lost out to higher bids, i have also purchased a FF which i`ve been after since missing its release in 2006 due to being the wrong end of oxford street looking for santa`s ghetto
these prints are slowly going into the hands of collectors and will not be reappearing any time soon in the future, we will see what happens to micallef`s "stock" as his work goes on a world tour and the supply of his prints dries up on ebay.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by robotoil on Apr 29, 2008 18:43:17 GMT 1, I personally never "got" the Micallefs that were on POW. That's OK. Seemed like a lot of money for those prints and that he was really just getting dragged up by Banksy sales, as do a lot of other artists in the POW "stable". Micallef has a lot of talent, but the prices on his stuff at the L.A. show were unbelievably high IMO. I can't remember the exact prices or the run sizes but I recall thinking 30K for an original charcoal drawing that looked like a college student's work???!!! The print edition sizes were high too as were the prices on those. That show happened when the rest of the art scene was going through growing pains and prices started skyrocketing. No one wanted to be left without something by Micallef in case he turned out to be worth as much as Banksy. What were the prices on the Minotaur prints? 2K? I remember thinking, Micallef hasn't been around for so long to be asking that much money on such a large run. But, what do I know. People bought them all. Normally, I can't be stopped when it comes to buying something I want. But those edition sizes and prices were a huge red flag. The fans did not force Micallef to set those prices or edition sizes. Micallef did that on his own. Can we blame Laz here? JK. Though I feel that Laz/Blu is a great example of what we are discussing. If Micallef had put out editions of 100 and priced them at 1K each, he would have made a nice score and the prints would be going up instead of down. Is Micallef getting harmed by all this? I don't know. Will people start thinking a little more rationally before doing the F5 dance? I certainly hope so. Is it possible for Micallef to reprice his work a little lower without getting pissed on? Dunno. I suspect that Micallef will have a nice career with his talent. There just might not be anyone falling over themselves in a sellout panic the next time. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so.
Everyone is going crazy for the next big thing. There are collectors who want the work and will hang it. There are investors who collect. There are collectors who invest. There are investors who flip. Then there are collectors who get caught up in the latest release and jump ship to be with the "in" crowd. Take your pick. At some point, everything comes up for sale. No one is guaranteed a proper return on anything or even to break even. Only buy what you like in case you're stuck with it. And, quite honestly, with all the flipping that has gone on lately, people are going to be taking a bath on some of this over the top priced sh#t. Imagine charging 2-4K more for an image that is done on canvas, just because it is canvas. Good grief.
The latest flavor is Nick Walker. While I thought his Mona stuff was near crap and wouldn't hang it on my walls. I could understand someone thinking it would be a fun piece to have at a reasonable price. Sure the latest stuff is a big step up artistically, but the same drum is beating for Walker that beat for Micallef. Everyone is tripping all over themselves to get this stuff. I bet half are just along for the ride for a quick score. Who will be the next star in two months and "what do I need to sell to afford it"....hello eBay...hello Nick Walker.
It still amazes me that Banksy prints sell for what they do. Banksy, IMO, isn't a particularly "good" artist. He is clever though. At some point that cleverness will wear thin and the last round of buyers to pony up 10K for a choppers with a bow tie or Jack and Jill will be be holding the bag.
Sometimes artists or their gallery supervision get the pricing wrong. Fans can be trendy and fickle. But take Shepard Fairey as an example, he keeps prices low and has been in the game for a long time. He's built a loyal fan base over time. The same can not be said for a lot of other hip artists and there will always be someone else who comes on the scene and steals the last stars thunder. When that happens, it is not surprising that some of the current popular trendy artists get burned along with their "loyal" fans.

Sorry, imo the 2400 prints "drying" up > micallef valuation going up theory is far fetched. Whats done is done, most artists don't have 2400 prints out for a lifetime.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by nacional on Apr 29, 2008 21:10:32 GMT 1, Comparison with Walker is a bit off. If you look at is price-wise it is only the new vandal prints that are pulling big money. The dumb-but-fun Mona stuff stills goes for a couple of hundred quid. IMO opinion this will change as at present you have an edition of 150(?) vandals going for more than a 1000 quid whilst there are stronger images (cans colorways) in editions of 10 0r 12 going for less than 1/2 or even 1/3 of the vandal prices.

And robo--you are a very bright guy, with a well seasoned perspective. I respect your opinions and insights a great deal. And I respectfully inform you that Judgement Day is a near-perfect work of art.
Despite this jarring oversight, I am still happy to consider you a friend.

it just means people wont speculate on his work in future and people who want it to hang on their walls should be able to get it.

Well said Killerkellah. Spot on. Micallef has a pure talent and as I have said in similar threads, cream will always rise to the top.
OK so some people bought some prints that were once worth x and are now worth less does that mean that he is now a shit artist?
Over the next few years I believe AM will be proven to be one of the greatest artist of his generation (imo of course). Don't forget that he has yet to fully mature and is still experimenting to finely tune his talent. Watch this space

Over the next few years I believe AM will be proven to be one of the greatest artist of his generation (imo of course). Don't forget that he has yet to fully mature and is still experimenting to finely tune his talent. Watch this space Agree there. Something like this is for me simply the master piece.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by frank11 on May 15, 2008 9:40:56 GMT 1, its not like hes lost all his talent! ok, so you can pick up his work on the cheap at the moment, good! it just means people wont speculate on his work in future and people who want it to hang on their walls should be able to get it. Totally agree bram, the problem is that Micallef was the first artist from this scene to get completely mauled by Flippers. The Impure Idols show prints sold to people with no intention of ever framing. They were in it for a quick buck. So yeah hope they loose some cash.
I for one love AM work and am enjoying the oppurtunity of buying earlier works that previously were out of reach.
plus with all the frenzy surrounding Nick W, i have noticed that the recent prints have come down significantly in price, is his work now rubbish as well

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by killerkellah on May 15, 2008 9:54:43 GMT 1, i had a look at AM's website for the first time in ages, his art amazing.
it has that timeless quality like Adam Neates, that people will want on their walls for years to come. Thats why your right Bram when you say cream will rise to the top.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by Bram on May 15, 2008 10:09:15 GMT 1, Like that great philosopher Jarvis Cocker once wrote - let's all meet up in the year 2000 (+20) and see if the name Antony Micallef is still a name remembered in this crazy art world. This forum is a little like the British red top press, we build them up.......and then we knock them down.
I have a feeling Mr M is brewing something amazing and when it is revealed this forum will be wall to wall Micallef.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by killerkellah on May 15, 2008 10:12:02 GMT 1, the only people worried about AM's art are the people who bought it as a short term investment and arent making much profit on Ebay.
on the positive side, its a great time to be snapping up his art, much more affordable than a year ago.

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by killerkellah on May 15, 2008 10:40:41 GMT 1, its takes years and a special talent for people to look at your work and someone to recognise your style
you know when you see a micallef. he has his own unique style and it will continue to develop.

Of course you won't you're only concerned about the bottom line. [/quote]
"true fan". Oh dear. Any discussion has descended into farce as soon as that is mentioned.

not really...i wouldnt have bought any of those for fifty quid let alone a grand plus. However the rest of his work is very good and the cheaper it is all the better i would say, it means i can afford more than the two prints i have. Lots of carping on Mr M prices but of course this will do a u-turn on the next release

Antony Micallef hits all time low over weekend!, by angryboy on May 15, 2008 15:38:43 GMT 1, There seems to be quite a lot of Micallef prints on ebay at the minute, normally a Micallef search comes back with a load 'Micallef interest' entries whereas most seem to be actual Micallef prints now. It's like the flippers response to prices dropping is to get their offering on there quickly before they go down further.
