D*FACE, by robinbanks on Apr 14, 2008 13:52:48 GMT 1, You can't use the fact that he uses a computer to create his work as reason to dispute his claim to be an artist.
I don't think anyone could deny Chiho Aoshima her place in the contemporary art world - and her work is computer generated.
Like all art, when you strip away the hype and the bs, it comes down to the strength of the image and the message behind it. That is where I find D*Face work to be lacking - it\s just a bit bland, boring and samey for my liking.
So is D* an artist? Yes he is - albeit a pretty uninspiring, unoriginal one.

thats my point, its seems that anyone with a mac and half a brain can call themselves an artist these days and as such the quality of the work has deteriorated - while prices continue to rise....

But the thread that you started is about DFace - not you!
Artists have to work to be considered so. Many of them work tirelessly for years with hardly any recognition and for very little money before they are taken seriously.
You're beginning to sound like the bloke who looks at the Pollock and says to his mate, "I could have done that". Yes you probably could, but that isn't the f**king point.

some would disagree with that mate. most dance music is made on computers..

yeah, a lot of good music is made on computers, eg Kraftwerk, KLF, Aphex Twin. but just because you can make music on a computer does NOT make you a musician. same with art.

Anyone can use use photoshop (to some extent) but that does not make them an artist. Anyone can use a pencil (to some extent) but that does not make them an artist either. But great art can be created using either/both. It all depends on the level of creative thought that you bring to it. Very few people use either Photoshop or pencils very well.
Kingdomecome said that he could get an image from google, mess around with it in photoshop and hey presto he's created art. I don't see the difference compared to pre photoshop days - rip some images out of magazines, glue them together in a collage and hey presto you've created art - without any technology at all.

D*FACE, by froz on Apr 14, 2008 16:19:53 GMT 1, Im curious as to why this is such a debate...doesnt banksy use photomontages to reproduce his work? The images he has he must have got somewhere and they do look like they are photos with a threshold adjustment then paints in a color himself (could it be with the photoshop brush?)
Im not dissing banksy, as I think he is brilliant with his pieces, but you can look at his work as well and say it is graphic design. If you have the images, you can reproduce his work in photoshop or even illustrator for that matter. Take happy chopper...that one looks like it was done using illustrator, and applause...those are most likely actual images that have had treatment to them some way(atleast thats what i thought when i first looked at it).
I find graphic designers are artists as well. I dont agree that everyone with a mac/pc with creative suite is one though.
