I think not. Do it with records on turntables, Rap over it and you invented hip hop? Is hip hop not music?
Just because you have the tools at your disposal, does not mean you will be creative with them.

D*FACE, by mike hunt on Apr 14, 2008 17:27:44 GMT 1, This is a ridiculous argument - anyone can pick up a paintbrush and call themselves an artist as well - paintbrushes are quite easy to get hold of! Before computers there were loads of mediocre, unoriginal artists who used paintbrushes. I'm glad that technology has made art accessible. There will always be crap art, computers or no computers. Without computers, would the streetart scene have thrived so much? This argument about designer or artists is so old. Warhol did it first so its nothing new or revolutionary.

D*FACE, by uac on Apr 15, 2008 0:34:19 GMT 1, Its an old argument... when does design become art, when does art become design? Academics have argued the point time after time, the question can never be answered.
The mac is a tool and technology has always been adopted through the history of art. Dface is relevant with the work he produces and the mediums he produces it with, i'm sure his tools and mediums are a comment themselves. Most contemporary painters, artists, whatever use macs as a tool.
As far as graphic designers are concerned, well i imagine 90% of the artists in this movement are from the design background rather than a fine art background, which makes sense in this image driven movement. Most of the artists do seem to be making art though rather than design. IMHO of course.

D*FACE, by mcster on Apr 15, 2008 7:50:53 GMT 1, I know I'm into this thread late (sorry) but felt I have something to add. Dface does his stuff on the streets and is therefore a Street Artist. How he produces it is irrelevant - Jamie Reid used photocopies ! Whether Dface is a graphic designer by trade has no more rellevance to his street art than if he works on the Fish Counter at Morrisons.

D*FACE, by atomone on Apr 15, 2008 10:33:16 GMT 1, I work in graphic design and got D*Faces portfolio in when he was freelancing, all I knew about him was his packaging work, not knowing who he was or his background outside of work, his design work was good but after working with him on packaging you could see his frustrations that he wanted to ease that side of his career and concentrate on becoming more of a serious artist, there are packs on shelves out there that you probably buy everyday that D may have had a hand in but wouldn't be fair for me to list them, he was a great designer when I worked with him and was always doodling his characters on his sketch pad, and the project I worked with him was to be his last (and is still on shelf), conclusion...he's a good artist and a good graphic designer! and a thoroughly good all round chap!!
