Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by reznyce on Jul 14, 2008 12:41:04 GMT 1, Anyone know the source of the news (or rumor) about the possible representation of Faile by the Gagosian Gallery? In the past few days a number of people have mentioned this to me. Frankly, I'm a bit skeptical.

May have been discussed before, but some of us don't have time to hand out on this forum every minute of each day. Maybe you can direct me to the other discussion

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by snausages on Jul 14, 2008 21:53:49 GMT 1, So let me get this straight. You're trying to track down the source, of a completely unfounded rumour, that you read on the banksy forum on the oh so very reliable internet?
And what exactly are you going to do when you track down this nonexistent source anyway? Who cares. zzzzzz

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by snausages on Jul 14, 2008 22:34:54 GMT 1, Although I doubt it happens it would be funny to be a fly on the wall at Gagosian the day they announce they'd represent Faile. Would be hilarious to see what happens. They'll probably get about 10,000 emails and phone calls from every Banksy and street art nut wanting to be put on waiting lists and such.

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by reznyce on Jul 17, 2008 4:51:51 GMT 1, I wrote Gagosian the following:
"I recently heard that your gallery may represent the New York art collective, Faile. Is this true. If so, please keep me informed of any upcoming shows. Thank you."
They responded with the following:
"We have not yet released our upcoming exhibitions schedule. As soon as information is available to the public it will be posted on our website, www.gagosian.com.
Regards, Gagosian Gallery"
They didn't say that it's not true.

Considering they've been included in painting the outside of the Tate I would be amazed if they didn't!

Exactly. Even if that's true and one day will Faile be connected with GG I would be surprised if that information is going to be public (esp to ordinary Joe) before anything is official. This kind of info is usually available only to a few for obvious reasons In the meantime I would take it as it is - just a rumor. Bring on October show!

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by thesewalls on Jul 17, 2008 8:44:48 GMT 1, oh lordy lord Dave, onemandown72, and of course, reznyce, get a f*cking grip. it's called being professional (the response from the gallery), and rhetoric (a big part of how people communicate). motor that was a very nice way of putting it, i commend you. bring on the October show is right! may have to take a trip out there, it's been a while.
snausages you're a funny cat daddy keep up the good work.

My comment was more directed at GG being aware of who Faile are, no more no less, and this was the point I was making! In the same way I would like to think that they were aware of all of the leading lights in the street art arena

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by jamesreeve5 on Jul 17, 2008 19:25:25 GMT 1, come on guys... the general tendency of this board is to have a very street-art centric view of the art world. Even if Faile is a passing blip on Larry's radar, don't you think there are a hundred other artists out there that Gagosian is likely considering as well?

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by snausages on Jul 17, 2008 20:44:29 GMT 1, What the freak is wrong with you people? Gagosian represents Takashi Murakami, Alec Soth, Chris Burden, Jenny Saville, Roger Ballen, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha amongst others. These guys are LEGENDS that have numerous museum shows, biennials, a long history and have had an undeniable impact on modern art.
Now I like Faile but get freaking serious. It's a stupid rumor that you read on the internet for christ's sake! It's not true, it's a stupid prankster or idiot who's trying to pump up the price of his Faile prints. Get over it already. Maybe it'll happen years down the road? Who knows. But it's not true. But if y'all keep pestering them like you do I'm sure it will turn them off to the idea if they ever do think it. I doubt they want to deal with 10,000 screaming idiot street art fans.

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by mose on Jul 17, 2008 20:55:28 GMT 1, Some of your examples don't really disqualify someone like Faile, as they do not(or did not) have 'a long history' prior to Gagosian's involvement.
Take Alec Soth. First exhibition was in 2003, first book in 2004, first Gagosian exhibit in 2006.
Or take Hirst. First solo show = 1991. First Gagosian show = 1996. Now, a LOT happened in between the two, yes, but 'long history' = no.
Still, I agree that there is much silliness in the air.

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by snausages on Jul 17, 2008 21:43:42 GMT 1, True but Alec Soth was at least in the Whitney Biennial and has produced (many would argue) the greatest/most important photo book in decades before Gagosian picked him up. Hirst is well Hirst and I think he's a rare exception but at least 5 years not 2 or 3.

True, true.
BTW, just as I don't know photography that well, and could stand to learn a lot more about art in general, has anyone, ever dropped a book like Soth? Ever witness something like Sleeping by the Mississippi? Any precedent for that?

Faile Gagosian Gallery Question, by snausages on Jul 17, 2008 22:08:18 GMT 1, Although maybe some other recent photo books command similar prices to Sleeping but I think it's because they're more scarce.
Sleeping is a book in very large demand and maybe not unprecedented but it's rare to see. Sleeping by the Mississippi was actually released as a limited edition handmade book first, then Steidl printed it in 2004.
But the Diane Arbus monograph from 1972 is a big deal. Robert Frank's the Americans. Joel Sternfeld's American Prospects is another big one. William Eggleston's Guide from 1976 is also really popular and hard to find in the first printing. And all of these are pretty expensive in their first edition first printing.
