POW Open Day • 2008, by melmoth on Dec 7, 2008 20:56:39 GMT 1, Actually, assuming everyone who bought the 60000 tickets bought 20 each, essentially that's 3000 entries, divided by 150 prints make the odds about 1 in 20. im pretty appalled by everyones maths on here.. the odds are not that small.. just because there is 150 (or 299) prints doesnt mean you divide the number of entries by the number of prints.. you treat each draw as a separate occurrence.. then add them all together, so saying there is 60000 tickets, and you have brought 20 you have a 20 in 60000 chance for the first draw. so draw one you have a 20 in 60000 draw two you have a 20 in 59980 draw three you have a 20 in 59960 etc etc etc i just dont think people should get their hopes up when people are saying 1/13 and 1/20.... and learn some maths everyone, its not f**king hard
Took my a while to work out what you were doing there rich, until I remembered that you were only allowed to win once, so all 20 of that draw winner's tickets come off the overall total.
I've read elsewhere on the board that 8000 were sold yesterday. Assuming that another 4000 were sold today, making a total of 12000. By the 150th draw, the overall eligible pile would be diminished to just over 9000 (9020). So, if everyone bought the full quota of 20 tickets, the best odds you would get for the draw would be 20 out of 9020, or 1 out of 451.
In a doomsday scenario of 60,000 tickets, and again assuming that everyone that entered bought 20 tickets, your best odds would be 1 in 2851.
Note though that your odds are actually worse than those stated above as not everyone bought 20 tickets. For example, if everyone bought 5 tickets, for an overall pot of 12000 tickets, your best odds would be 1 in 2251.
In other words folks, get f5'ing now!!

The numbers above assume that you can only win once, and that if you do, all the remainder of your 20 entries get taken out of the eligible pile of tickets. It's also assumed that there are 150 draws total, not 150 each for Banksy, Micallef 1 and Micallef 2. If it's the latter, then you would need to know how many of the 12000 were in each pile, average number of tickets bought by people in each of these piles, etc.
At the end of the day, it's all guesswork as we don't know any of these details. I do know though that you've got long odds of winning one, and if you do you are a jammy bastard ;D

POW Open Day • 2008, by themightyreds on Dec 7, 2008 21:13:07 GMT 1, don't know about the odds [might try and work them out later] but you've got to be in it to win it so as long as you're in the pot you've got a chance and thats more than you normally get with an online release!
Glad i didn't go there yesterday too according to some peoples stories of massive queue's for everything. was there from about 3pm today and it was great. No hassles, no rush, no queue's. Lot of good stuff in the office [not as much good stuff as at Mutate Britain though..!] and saw some quality work being done by grafter on the side of the sausage van. Top fella Grafter even did a piece for me and fellow forum-ite wave on some paper we blagged from the PoW office! Ace.

that lottery was well open for abuse, they should have done a better lottory ticket, like you said well easy to copied, i said this to a POW staff member on Sat, but she just looked at me and said ahhh, i also know that flippers and pisstakers will have had lots of email address and friends names to increase the amount of lottery tickets they could buy, yes we are foooked edit i do think the lottery was a great idear,i just have a criminal mind i guess, the open day concept with the charity element was top draw, it's better to spend money on art than on flights to far away places to go to SG08, if i win a Banksy i love you POW, if not it was a fix

POW Open Day • 2008, by Zippy on Dec 7, 2008 21:26:20 GMT 1, i'm a bit f**ked off reading this thread. in fact, to be honest, I stopped reading after a page or 2 as I found it all a bit depressing. I went to POW at 5.30 ish today. I parked at the top of the road next to the barrier on a meter (which is free on a sunday). My middle child - aged 9 and I strolled in and there was roughly 30 people milling around. As usual with any POW event, everyone was friendly, relaxed and there was no 'hysteria' of getting a banksy as we were first in the Q etc... We had a chat and a laugh with the 'lottery' girls outside, went inside looked at the art and I dont think anyone here bothered even mentioning the banksy original of 'Thomas the tank' which we thought was fantastic. The people screening were friendly and chatty and also those on the stalls who must have been freezing their tits off for 8 hours a day. What about a thanks to them? I didn't buy anything (apart from the tickets) did not get any special treatment (before anyone asks) but, we genuinely enjoyed the 'street feel' to it even if it was only 1 degree out. I met Alsbabar for the first time (so it wasn't all great ;D) but I don't get all these POW 'knockers' on here rambling on about Queing and the odds of this or that. It wasnt about that. It was about POW opening the doors to the 'conspiracy theory' lot on here and raising good money for a decent charity that is close to the Artists' hearts. Lets thank POW for letting us all in and for giving us a fair chance to get a new Banksy whilst doing some good for those in the world less fortunate than ourselves.

So zippy, if there wasnt the opportunity to win a Banksy or any other art would you have still have donated 20 GBP to sightsavers?
I understand this is indeed about charity and the art, but many of us donating also want to win a print and curious what the odds are.
If I were there, I'd thank pow but by the same token I couldnt afford the flight over to see it all or to buy a ticket, I had to send someone on for me.
I am a big fan of POW, and their artists, I think though people want to know their odds and thats not unreasonable.

POW Open Day • 2008, by digitalkid on Dec 7, 2008 21:42:45 GMT 1, richy, I would suggest you learn the maths. Lets assume everyone bought 10 tickets each and a total of 10000 were sold. That is essentially 1000 total entrants. As an entrant wins, his/her other entries are automatically disqualified (unless they were put under someone elses name) 1000 total entrants divided by 150 prints is 1 in 6. This formula does not account for unique entrants but takes into account that most entrants probably bought 20 tickets for themselves but I knocked it down to 10 for those who purchased for others. The issue is your formula assumes these were all are unique entries, my formula assumes that most purchased multiple entries. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Just for fun though, lets assume 10% of the entries were unique, 50% bought 20 tickets, and the remaining 40% purchased 10 tickets each. Based on those numbers you have 1000 unique entries out of 10000, 400 uniques who purchased 10 each, and 250 uniques who purchased 20 each. For a total of approximate 1650 unique entries. Divide that by the number of prints avail (150) and that's 1 in 11. If you increase the unique entries to 20% and lower the other 2 proportionally you have a 1 in 18 chance. even going off your math, a 20 in 10000 chance equates into a 1 in 500 chance. which will mean only 1 or 2 active members of this board will get one. I bet there's more winners than that on the board.
I'm inclined to think pfffffffffft is correct..

I bet there's more winners than that on the board. I'm inclined to think pfffffffffft is correct..

POW Open Day • 2008, by spenie1975 on Dec 7, 2008 21:53:12 GMT 1, I got there about 3pm today, no queue for tickets and about 10-15 queuing for pow. How is it people knew others from the forum yet had never met them before? Is there some banksy forum dating thread that has everyones photo on? Look for the people with their left trouser leg rolled up and a teddy bear in the back pocket. Has nobody told you the dress code yet.

POW Open Day • 2008, by graffoto on Dec 7, 2008 21:55:43 GMT 1, i have no tickets so have nothing to gain - say you have 20 tickets in Mr B lotto say 10,000 tickets sold - each time they pick a winner
you have 20 chances in 10,000
1e 1 in 500 simple
you chances increase slightly very very everytime you don't win
good luck

POW Open Day • 2008, by stickee on Dec 7, 2008 21:56:21 GMT 1, pfffft must be correct
easy maths again
lets say there was 1000 tickets sold (for easy maths purposes) and 100 people bought them (10 each)
and there was 10 prizes
so do you have a 10 in 1000 chance? or a 1 in 10 chance?
I would go with the one in ten chance from the fact that 10 people will win which is 10% of the 100 people.
Zippy- As for people just talking about prints etc and lotto odds......me personally I spent most of the day speaking to the staff and bought some of them a beer and gave away a few canvases

POW Open Day • 2008, by Zippy on Dec 7, 2008 22:15:17 GMT 1, i'm a bit f**ked off reading this thread. in fact, to be honest, I stopped reading after a page or 2 as I found it all a bit depressing. We had a chat and a lugh with the 'lottery' girls outside, went inside looked at the art and I dont think anyone here bothered even mentioning the banksy original of Thomas the tank which we thought was fantastic. The people screening were friendly and chatty and also those on the stalls who must have been freezing their tits off for 8 hours a day. What about a thanks to them? I didnt buy anything (apart from the tickets) did not get any special treatment befoe anyone asks but genuinely enjoyed the 'street feel' to it even if it was only 1 degrees out. I met Alsbabar for the first time (so it wasn't all great!) but I dont get all these POW knocker on here rambling on about Queing and the odds of this or that. It wasnt about that. It was about POW opening the doors to the 'conspiracy theory' lot on here and raising good money for a decent charity that is close to the Artists' hearts. Let thank POW for letting us all in and for giving us a fair chance to get a new Banksy whilst doing some good for those in the world less fortunate than ourselves.
Hey Pft...
Firstly, I am interested in winning a new Banksy as like yourselves, being a huge fan, I would love to own one. If I get one, fantastic, if I dont, well I have hopefully helped the charity out with my donation. I am interested in the Odds but there is a difference between 'interest' and 'obsession/greed' which I am feeling on here from the majority of posts. I am not trying to be a saint, (I sell stuff on here and ebay) but none of the posts reflected what the open day was truly about. And to me, that is shame.
