POW Open Day โข 2008, by digitalkid on Dec 10, 2008 21:20:29 GMT 1, I didn't win the lottery and yes I did stand in a queue for 3 hours to get a ticket. But I'm still not going to whinge about it. I didn't expect to win, the odds (lets not go into that again here!) never looked good however you worked them out. Would I have got tickets if Banksy wasn't fronting the lotto? fuck knows really as it didn't happen. I would have still gone to the open day for sure though.
Whinging is really not a nice trait in someone - peace and love to all and all that bollocks

POW Open Day โข 2008, by buffin on Dec 11, 2008 17:55:14 GMT 1, Same as G man. Was into the print room in the first half hour or so when most still available but left empty handed. Only a few prints appealed and they were overpriced. Can see most of these available on ebay for much less come the end of January.

Last year a Mickey of a 100 edition with a very hand finished was 225.
2008 means 300 for a 140 edition with a presume hand finished...
No, thanks...

There is no presume about it. It is definately hand finished. I would also say Bast has a bigger profile now than he did last year.

Well, I think because this was the first POW open day people were unsure what to expect. Considering the current economic climate, I'm not sure I would have flown over in retrospect either. Is it worth 400+ USD round trip to pick up a $750 bast and $250 eelus not knowing what the rest of the event was going to be like up until a few days prior?
I would have flown over for a ghetto, would have been nice to come over for this but with so much up in the air I think many decided to stay home.

POW wasnt the only show going on though, do people go to ghetto because they know they can deffinatly buy art or for the event ?? Im not knocking you personally, ive just seen a lot of people complain about POW when they had every chance to make the effort

I strongly considered it but unfortunately for me I have too much work and can't leave!! Seems like it was a good time to get over to the UK for a few reasons.

POW Open Day โข 2008, by pfffffffffft on Dec 11, 2008 18:37:32 GMT 1, Perhaps it was worth coming over for the experience - regardless of whether there was anything to grab.
As stated in the prior post because this was the first pow open day no one knew what to expect. So would the experience be standing in a queue for 4 hours and fighting to get a glimpse of everything or would it have been calm and enjoyable?
Listen folks, the economy is bad out there and many of us dont have $400+ plus hotels and transport to drop on a weekend trip to the UK. That could be someone's only vacation for the year. People knew what to expect with the last couple of ghettos, if you arent sure you're going to have a good time at the event I dont see any issue with those of us in the states not spending that amount of money for the event not knowing if it was going to end up great.
And Stuey, considering you were banned from Laz/Pow for grabbing postcards and catalogs, you shouldnt have even been there. Quite cheeky of you to even comment on it considering. Please put me back on ignore asap.

POW Open Day โข 2008, by retardthebear on Dec 12, 2008 2:43:48 GMT 1, just dont go on the saturday. I went on sunday and walked straight in at about 3pm. Had a butch, queued for all of 5mins to get in the exhibition... easy peasy! All the same stuff was there, just not all the people! ;D
But fair point, i wouldn't fly to states for a weekender regardless of what was going on, havent won the lottery yet!

POW Open Day โข 2008, by Grubster on Dec 12, 2008 4:29:06 GMT 1, I'll be there next year with even better exchange rates and more bang for your buck then too. Don't get me wrong, with the BP and EURO droping nearly 25% is a great deal, but next year we'll be looking at nearly $1.25-1.35 / 1 pound. thus saving money all around and walkiing away with better art than this year and hopefully stay longer and hang around for 12 day of xmas and other great shows on that side of the pond!

Dont count on it, the auto bail out is being voted on now and it's looking like it will not pass. the dollar is dropping like a stone as we speak.

POW Open Day โข 2008, by s2dh on Dec 12, 2008 5:17:27 GMT 1, My opinion on the best print on the day - (i posted this in another thread, but thought it should go on here too...)
Banksy is quality - i think everyone agree's. I cannot say i was too impressed by the pieces at POW.. Nola is ok, but the "VLH" - kids saluting a Tesco bag on a pole - Hmmm.... If you see the real piece that is on the wall it proves to be very clever and very cool (what with the use of the drainpipe etc..) - but the print not so good....
Micallef's Bethlehem has the emotion that makes the piece special if you know the issues in Palestine etc... (The piece has something about it that trumps most prints on the day)
Lucky for me i managed to win the chance in the raffle to purchase one...
I also got the Eeelus on the day, which i thought was superb.... But, i also liked the Blu "Gaza Strip" mainly due to seeing this in person on a wall of a building in Prague a month ago... (i really liked this - must have taken ages to do the original)

POW Open Day โข 2008, by f5doordienyc on Dec 12, 2008 5:31:32 GMT 1, i wish I couldv'e got off from work to fly over. I don't think for a second it wouldv'e been possible not to have an amazing time. Not even talking about what was for sale but just the opportunity to the see the street art that was done and the overall feeling of all the talent in one place must have been amazing. Not to mention the steal from work show only a week later...what more can you ask for.. Next year I will definitely have off for most of december I dont care what it takes. I'm so grateful I can at least request buyers catalogs to be emailed to me for most of the UK shows so I at least can look at what I wish I could afford and hopefully snag a piece or 2 once in awhile. Cheers ...by the way p.o.w site is down right now and my fingers are crossed
