Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by gm on Sept 16, 2006 13:35:28 GMT 1, I quite liked being 'the one without the avatar', but I'll let it stay on condition that you stop calling me "GM" . IR an anti-capitalist p.s. Cheers, I likes it ;D Sorry What would you like to be called? Its just I only know you as Sorry! Im not gonna say it ;D You can change your name on here by clicking on PROFILE in the top menu Silky
Spot the difference: GM / gm
I thought the "anti-capitalist" bit may have been a bit of a clue
I just think it looks better in lowercase.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by johnjohn on Sept 16, 2006 17:19:06 GMT 1, While we're all talking about the PRICE of the art (shame) and the celebs who were at the expo (shamer) the LA Times is focusing on Animal Rights. Which as well as being predictable is a statement in itself. Never mind the 20 billion, think of the poor elephant. We don't see the elephant in the living room - and when we do we take it literally.

Well that's the US of A for ya... always seems to be focused on the 'wrong' problems. I'm not saying that animal cruelty is a non-issue, but it's just not the only issue that the focus should be on. Oh, never mind that there's an unnecessary war going on in Iraq where thousands of people are dying for no reason, Janet Jackson's right boob was shown on national TV!!! *Shock*Horror*Gasp*!!!!!!

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by guerillaart on Sept 17, 2006 1:29:53 GMT 1, I picked my prints up this afternoon, I think I was actually the first person to collect. Didn't check them until I got back to my hotel as I actually feared for my own safety as I was leaving the show, what with the sheer number of disappointed fans there were. The prints are very, very nice and the paper that they are printed on is just amazing, it's not standard POW paper as they were printed over here and the edges of the prints are torn, not guillotined, which is a really nice touch. The prints from the LA show are numbered in the bottom right hand corner and they are NOT stamped. Stand out print, Applause is simply amazing!

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by rotten on Sept 17, 2006 7:01:14 GMT 1, no, surprisingly the color of applause didn't carry over...it's the print that is most different from the original, with the image mirrored/opposite....and primarily black and white, w/ red applause sign, and yellowish guys holding the sign.
the rest are pretty spot on w/ minor differences...the other biggest difference is the trolley print is black and off white w/ red trolley handles which looks way better than the original's color scheme in my humble opinion

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by joelp on Sept 17, 2006 18:51:11 GMT 1, Hi, I've been a fan for a while and read the forum all the time but just don't post.
Anyway, I'm here in the US and woke up this morning to find banksy ALL over the TV news. CNN headline news, fox news, abc news, just every channel is picking up on him. The biggest reason is that a lot of animal rights people are pissed about the elephant. PETA is already pushing government officials in LA to change the law to make it harder to get animal permits.
They do show a bit of his art though and fans arguing that his social message in his art is so positive that everyone should focus on that and the activists are getting upset over something trivial.
Looks like he's on the verge of getting huge over here.

But get this: The main focus of almost all the news reports ISN'T about his work, but about that elephant. Way to completely miss the point, Americans.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by RBK on Sept 17, 2006 19:56:02 GMT 1, I agree it is unfortunate the elephant is being the main focus. I can understand the PETA concerns - but this elephant has done tons of movies, has caring handlers, etc. Furthermore, most people don't realize that at Indian weddings it is quite common to paint elephants. Lastly, it is embarassing our media is focusing on this and missing the whole point about talking about the 'elephant in the room' - poverty. Wonder if Banksy will donate the piles of cash he received from selling out the exhibit?
Onto the actual show....
It was BY FAR the best art exhibition I've ever gone to. I am so glad I flew in from Chicago to attend. Some of the highlights: - Awesome location - Met some great people - wish I had met more of you members - Awesome prints - luckily I got a few - My favorite pieces: Cleaner Rat, Morons, Grannies, Applause, & UFO Oil - Coolest thing was in the plexiglass frames: A very simple box sketch of elephant matching the the living room wall with the words "make this happen" under the drawing
Banksy/Laz... you did make it happen - and I'm glad I got to experience it!

gent รacardi on Sept 17, 2006 22:33:46 GMT 1, Wondeful show, I totally agree!
The focus on the elephant is a big bummer, but it looks like the animal people won... kinda. Today (Day 3), the elephant was no longer painted. Just plain ol' natural grey. If paint on the elephant was the 'cruel' issue, then it's something I really don't get... paint doesn't hurt at all, and it's obviously washable. This elephant is the only one in a 50-mile radius, so it doesn't have to worry about being embarrassed in front of his/her girlfriend/boyfriend (I dunno, people seem to love anthropomorphizing so much). If dressing up the elephant is cruel, then what about millions of dog owners dressing their pets up in goofy costumes?
In my opinion, it was a great show with many powerful messages, but unfortunately, much of that was lost when people started paying all their attention to the elephant (and only the elephant). The whole point behind the elephant exhibit was lost, as were numerous other (more important) messages scattered throughout the show.
Banksy/Laz, there *are* many of us who got your point, and we thank you for not only the remarkable show, but for bringing it to Los Angeles as well. (Not like you'll read this, but still...) ;D

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by pica on Sept 17, 2006 23:18:47 GMT 1, Also wanted to add that I just heard from a friend picking up a print at 3pm Los Angeles time that the line to get in was all the way down to Santa Fe. The full length of Hunter St. for those who don't know. That is simply amazing. Easily 1000 people, maybe more. Good for Banksy! As for the paint, well, there is still an elephant in the room,so to speak. I have no problem with it as long as it's cool enough and taken on breaks. It should be treated no worse than a human model. If that has been done It's all good.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by joelp on Sept 17, 2006 23:19:46 GMT 1, The news did make a point to say that they made sure there were no toxins at all in the paint so then the activists started to complain that it was standing on concrete all day. So silly.
I hope banksy does a show in NYC some time within the next few years.

I got the Morons print. Actually thought it looked better than the painting, cause was it my imagination, or was the canvas just plain B&W, & the print has a gold frame on the painting? I agree the fact theprints are torn sheets, not cut, is pretty cool.
and yeah, the line was enormous today. was quite pelsant being able to get straight in, & walk around easily on friday.
oh, story we heard was that Brad Pitt bought 8 canvases at $140,000 a pop. Yowza. Kirsten Dunst was supposedly buying something. When we were there Friday Mila Kunis (from That 70's Show) was looking to buy a canvas maybe, & talking it over with Macauley Culkin & friends. I guess they weren't important enough to be invited Thursday. LOL

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by waiting4charlot on Sept 18, 2006 22:25:19 GMT 1, I was @ the show on Sunday and unfortunately the prints were sold out by the afternoon, but they posted a handwritten sign that said more would be available soonish from a website. The problem is I've forgotten the domain. It was something to the effect of: printonthewall.com/printsonthewall.com/posteronthewall.com/ postersonthewall. Does anyone who was there remember what the correct address is?

ADVICE TO ALL NEW AND OLD POSTERS - APOLOGIES FOR "SHOUTING"!!
THERE IS A LITTLE BUTTON AT THE TOP(ISH) OF YOUR BROWSER THAT SAY'S "READ THE LAST 100 POSTS", PLEASE DO THIS AND READ THEM BEFORE POSTING! SO MUCH STUFF HAS BEEN MULTI POSTED OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS THAT IT'S REALLY STARTING TO GRIND AT ME.
IF YOU HAD DONE THIS, MAYBE YOU WOULD HAVE FOUND THAT PICTURE ANYWAY, COS THE PICTURE YOU ASKED ABOUT IS STILL THERE. AND THE "100 POSTS" BUTTON IS JUST UNDERNEATH THE LINK FOR P I C T U R E S O N W A L L S . C O M ! ! !
FUNNY THAT INNIT!
AND THERE WAS ME THINKING IT WAS CALLED A BROWSER FOR A BLOOMIN REASON!!
AND BRICK BOY - FECK OFF!

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by mido on Sept 19, 2006 0:30:17 GMT 1, was half listening to R4 today and I heard a mention of 'the elephant in the room'.....
thought....ooh.,...Banksy is reaching R4 now, but no the term 'elephant in the room' also sometimes means something that stops dialogue happening full stop. e.g. Britain and Spain could never before discuss issues about Gibraltar (e.g. airport, customs), because the 'elephant in the room' was that Britain refused to discuss sovereignty in any way, shape or form. Therefore they could literally not get into a room together....
