Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by etienne07 on Sept 21, 2006 7:37:31 GMT 1, Yesterday at about 5:15 P.M. my assistant was driving home,as she does... On Frankilin Ave in Hollywood she came upon 2 men,one climbing a light pole the other filming. They were putting the wedding dress in a gas mask with a parachute that was outside the LA exhibition,up the light pole. She asked the guy filming, if he was banksy and said "No mam" winked and they ran off. I drove over,it lasted 90 minutes until a guy climbed the light pole dragged it down, and jumped in a car with it! She saw the bride go up and down! Nice!!!

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by lesroy on Apr 16, 2007 22:33:52 GMT 1, Gorgeous photos Bacardi... some of the best I have seen from Barely Legal.
Did you have to queue for long? And was it "easy" to get a print?

The photo of the queue was actually taken from someone else, so you can actually see me in the line - I'm the 3rd person right up front! ;D The show opened at 12 noon, but I went there at 11, thinking I would be first in line since Banksy was (then) still relatively unknown in USA... or so I thought. The turn out was actually very surprising for me.
As of the prints, once the red velvet rope was released, I headed straight for the print-selling-counter-thingy, as did lots of other people (I was gonna get my very first Banksys!). The people selling the prints weren't there yet! So we basically stayed in line in front of an unmanned table for about an hour before the selling-type-people came trickling in leisurely, taking their own sweet time All the while, I couldn't wait to go see the show itself, but if I left, I would have lost my place in line. Anyway, only about an hour and a half later did the print selling begin. We were told to return the next day to collect the prints... and when we returned then, we were again told to return the NEXT day. So that's partly why I ended up going to the show all 3 days. On the last day, even though the prints were available for collection, I had to wait for over 2 hours before they called my name.
I would've been extremely frustrated, but all that anger just evaporated as I held on to my tube. My very first Banksys!!!
So for me, it was "easy" to get the prints 'cos I arrived early, and when it was my turn in line, all 6 prints were still available to me (but alas, US$3000 wasn't )

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by Ågent ßacardi on Apr 16, 2007 23:47:54 GMT 1, Brilliant photos AgentBacardi I think a good few of us here in the UK aint seen some of those pieces
I'm quite surprised - I thought everyone had already seen them when other people posted theirs, which is why I never bothered sharing my pictures. But the pictures I have on there are not all the pieces that were on display, just my more favored ones. I think I'll upload some remaining pics on another page so that you guys can see the rest

I'll say!!
The prints were all sold out in about 90 minutes... and subsequently, when people asked if there were any prints available, they displayed a sign with "www.picturesonwalls.com" and referred people to it.
I guess that was a major contributing factor to the F5 bunfight that exists today!

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by stuey09 on Apr 16, 2007 23:56:30 GMT 1, I've no sympathy for myself AB. I can remember standing in my local gallery a little under a couple of years ago arguing with my wife over buying I fought the Law and Have a Nice Day. Both signed and only costing a few hundred each. Had all the time in the world at the time, but thought I would allow the dust to settle before splashing out. Think that decision ranks alongside the little German fella going for Russia rather than the UK a few years ago.

I had the same problem with Virgin Mary and Love Rat too. I thought they were too expensive when they were on POW forever!! Later bought my Virgin Mary off the evil bay for £600. Ouch
Even worse: When Banksy had his first LA show in 2001, I planned on going, but later changed my mind 'cos I thought I'd rather go party at a club and get drunk. Originals were going for PEANUTS. *Bangs head on keyboard*

Think we have all been there at some point but it still hurts.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by Ågent ßacardi on Apr 20, 2007 5:08:55 GMT 1, Alright, I uploaded a few more photos from the LA show in a separate album:
new.photos.yahoo.com/agentbacardi/album/576460762398686293
Note the elephant wasn't painted on the last day. You can thank the animal rights activists for that. It became basically an elephant enclosure in a 1-animal-only zoo (with lots of pretty pictures). Lots of parents brought their kids there just to see the elephant. Can you miss the point any more??

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by wildbill on Apr 23, 2007 18:10:36 GMT 1, Very nice!
I hadn't seen a great deal of those pieces. I also like the First Aid piece a lot. I'd like to see that as a print some day.
another one of my fav's is the "freedom" sculpture, probably because the "Nike of Samothrace" is the greatest sculpture of all time.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by bluerose1973 on Jul 13, 2006 13:40:00 GMT 1, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Banksys next show which I believe is in LA. Also I was wondering if anyone knew when and where Santas Ghetto would be this year and if there will be any work by Banksy. Thanks for your help. I am getting Banksy withdrawal symptons with no new Banksy's being out in ages.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by bluerose1973 on Jul 13, 2006 14:20:09 GMT 1, Thanks for that and I think that a group of people going to the LA show would be great craic. There are so many of us we could probably charter a plane - though we would need to make sure that the more talented members of this forum had added their Tag to the outside of the plane. Do you think anyone else on the forum knows as I would love to go to the LA show.

Banksy Show, Barely Legal in LA, by stencilope on Jul 16, 2006 18:58:35 GMT 1, How "big" is Banksy in the states? Is he as iconic ect as he is over here?
Actually, he is virtually unheard of in the states. Even in the art community he is not really getting any attention, he really doesn't strike a chord here at all. He is very well attuned to the gestalt of the UK culture of the moment and his stuff resonates there at home, but it gives Yank culture a complete miss. At best he will be viewed by the painfully trendy hipster hollywood crowd as the fad of the moment, which will last about a month like all of their disposable heroes. Trust me, I've lived among them for long enough now to be horribly aware of thier inability place real value on art or to focus on anything for more than 30 seconds. Just went to an art opening last month in Vegas with the whole Hollywood C-list crowd milling about paying WAY too much for the latest trend du jour. Uninspired drivel from a guy living in his car 6 months ago, now raking in banksy-like cash, already on his way out. 6 months from now the people who were there won't remember his name. Even the ones who bought stuff. I honestly expect that Banksy will get much the same kind of reception. I just don't think Duhmerica is the place for his style of work right now.
