t minus 30 mins and counting..., by corblimeylimey on Aug 28, 2007 21:16:22 GMT 1, don't forget though there are some seriously amazing street artists out there doing original for a few hundred dollars. You just have to put a bit of effort in to find them.
Too right I'm waiting on some news this week, fingers crossed an original will be mine in the coming weeks. I won't say anything more until it's done & dusted.

t minus 30 mins and counting..., by finsburyparkranger on Aug 28, 2007 21:25:00 GMT 1, I have been waiting for this print release since I found out that it was going to happen. I have always wanted a print from the NY studio, out of a small edition, nice image, personal touch ups etc. Having seen photos from the NY exhibition I was looking forward to the print release thinking I'd see some new shanghai/NY prints. I rescheduled everything today, to be at the computer. The release was a massive dissapointment (except for the originals - I admit). Nothing fresh, not so special prints, boring colourways and very, very overpriced. I'm cranky and disappointed
You know what, I'll be honest. I don't get faile. Can someone explain why they have become so significant in the street art scene? Mimmo Rotella has been doing work like their's since the 1940's. Some of his finest pieces are cheaper than these faile's. Whats the story? Why faile and not Mimmo Rotella?

t minus 30 mins and counting..., by numusic on Aug 28, 2007 21:28:21 GMT 1, 1) I never mentioned anything about you selling prints, wasn't aware of it No that was your implication though ESPECIALLY when you started spewing your BS about "values." But now I get it. Your need to throw curse words and insults at me only stems form your desire to save the precious folks who have true "street art values." as opposed to me. As if you know anything about me anyway. And yes I think calling out someone as being quote "really f**king sad." Is an insult. You can try and play yourself up all nice now but your original post was quite clearly an insult and personal attack on me. You need to grow up. I've already explained myself but one last time because you don't quite sem to understand anything. It was you who implied I bought prints I did not want, not I. Saying that the Vanity print is the one print I really want in no way means I do not like the other prints. It's only you and your negative personality that puts that twist on it. If I can only have one Faile print, that would be the one. And no I didn't buy the prints to bag and if you cared you might have noticed that I posted just theother day that I think it would be a bad idea to try and flip these prints because of the initial cost of these. And everyone else here had the same exact opportunity to buy prints as I did. And we all face the same risk of not getting anything at all just like I. So tell me Nu, which Faile print did you buy? Or are you just here to protect the poor and defensless forum members from "baggers." Isn't it time for bed for you?
Hmmm, what to do, what to do..... ok listen, It's a bit out of character I know, but I'm feeling quite mellow after a little cheeky smoke. So, you carry on arguing in circles with yourself and I'll get back to you when i've come down a bit.

Maybe it's just the current zeitgeist?

Agreed Faile borrow heavily from Rotella and also Lichtenstein in their work. I've actually been scouting a Rotella for a while. And yes, some of his pieces are cheaper than Faile - at least on Ebay. Though I've been making some enquiries about the Rotellas that I've really liked and this is just one of the recent responses I got, which may explain in part why Faile and not Rotella:
'Dear Sir,
First I would like to thank you for your email and your interest. Following your request, please find below the asked information :
Mimmo Rotella Amar, 2004 Mixed media on paper 98 x 68 cm Public price : 48 000 euro.
If you are interested in purchasing this work of art, please do not hesitate to contact me for more information. I will do my best to help you in this way."

Agreed, a very significant role and one which really broadened the genre, enabled a lot of others to follow without following some leftists agenda.
Mimmo tore posters and stuck them in a gallery. Faile tore, twisted, sampled and stole, created a new concept in street art, produced stunning original works, then proceeded for the next ten years to paste them around the globe for an audience of millions to enjoy, for free. And asked for nothing in return.
Respect !

Agreed. There's no harm in an artist re-interpreting the techniques and styles of other artists. Providing they're doing just that - re-interpreting and creating a style of their own. IMO Faile do.
If we're talking politically inspired decollage works it's also worth checking out Wolf Vostell. He's practiced many styles in his long career and I'm sure people will recognise some of his photographs.

Number one, Rotello originals are far more expensive than the originals that faile release on paper. Also, rotello prints are not the same as the faile prints with hand applied paints etc.
There are many more very interesting artists that have been doing street art or art that appears in the street for decades, but I do not think that this diminishes what Faile is doing.
I personally like Villegle.

t minus 30 mins and counting..., by pezlow on Aug 28, 2007 22:04:01 GMT 1, Hello all,
Just read through the whole of this thread and looked at most of the images on the faile site, both sold out and unsold.
A few comments.
Firstly it was great to see people's enthusiasm on this thread and their excitement as things got released. It's a shame the thread has descended into bickering. Plus ca change.
Secondly I will talk about the cost of the prints in a minute but first WOW what a incredible body of work faile have released today. I'm a huge faile fan. When a lot of the work we see is a little bit cliched and masculine they are such a breath of fresh air.
So many many fantastic prints were released and you just know they are going to be stunning in the flesh. My personal favourites, amongst many - yellow pages II, couldn't fight temptation (amazed that one hasn't sold out), sexy ad, bad seed, seduction of the mask, heartbreak in brooklyn, savage dreams. A few of the images won't load on my computer so I am sure there will be more.
Yes there were a couple of turkeys. Faile Stab is the worst faile print I have ever seen.
But the majority of the work is stunning. Just stunning.
Now for the prices. These surprised me. I thought they would be in the $500 to $1100 dollar price range. But they sold out (and will have to refund lots) so I guess you can't quibble with this. I personally think that whilst these prices seem expensive now they will not come christmas. Does make the lazinc prints (and the unsigned POW prints) seem like a bargain though doesn't it?
Hello all, Just read through the whole of this thread and looked at most of the images on the faile site, both sold out and unsold. A few comments. Firstly it was great to see people's enthusiasm on this thread and their excitement as things got released. It's a shame the thread has descended into bickering. Plus ca change. t minus 30 mins and counting..., by gavagai on Aug 28, 2007 22:07:48 GMT 1, Wow i didn't realise his work commanded such a price. I'm pleased, I genuinely think his work is better and being the original creator of the genre, thats a tough accomplishment to maintain against contempories. Heres an example of wolfs work....
I'll have to check out Wolf as well. Nice work. Thanks for the info. By the way if anybody is interested, Villegle just released a new book of his works (got it through amazon yesterday) that looks very good.
