Says alot, people only bought them when they realised they could flip them. But what does that say?

Mr Sewell that made perfect sense. Though I just don't get the "false neutered" bit. At least it doesn't come across in the image for me.

yes note the irony in the 'aggressive nature and stampede mentaility of...consumerism' as hundreds of city workers decend on soho to buy a print depicting their own behaviour

Favourite New Micallef Print?, by stuey09 on Sept 15, 2007 0:14:32 GMT 1, Just spent more time on this Josh and my take on Minotaur is;
Bulls head could be something to do with the bullshit of corporate capitalism which clouds its greed by presenting brands such as Disney characters and pepsi as friendly, when the reality is that muscle and weaponary will be used to ensure that the markets are kept open in order to maintain this corporate greed. Not saying I'm right. I am saying that this is my perception.

Favourite New Micallef Print?, by Strange Al on Sept 15, 2007 0:39:43 GMT 1, Stuey, Carlito et al, I expect you're completely right that Minotaur is a message about the rampant nature of consumer society. Given that we know a bit about Mic's art and the fact that he's published through Laz and POW, it's a logical assumption. Though for me the imagery is very much idolised. Now you can argue it plays on the internal struggle that we face between our desires for these material goods/icons and what we know is right. That's the charm - it looks cool, even though we know it shouldn't. Though for me it just doesn't challenge these ideals enough. In fact quite the opposite, it serves to idolize them further. I love that crazy cow with his massive machine guns, adidas trainers and corporate logos.

Perhaps just as religion is accepted as giving strength so others believe automatic weapons and huge biceps do the same. To be honest mate I'm knackered, so it's off to bed for this callsign.
Silky can I wake upto my 103 ;D

I completely appreciate that - like I said, it's easy to rationalise the piece when you know the context. You're reading a particular narrative into the piece, which is certainly very plausible and may very well be the correct interpretation. Though does the piece cause you to question or challenge this belief system or these desires? For me it just doesn't, though it may for you.
Plus when I take a step back and don't spend as much time analyzing the image, I'm staring at a picture of a big Cow toting some heavy weaponry. Just not my thing.

Favourite New Micallef Print?, by slowmo on Sept 15, 2007 10:28:08 GMT 1, Is it just me or is uzi lovers clearly supposed to be a dyptych? I think the two of them together would look amazing! The big thing with these judgements is that these prints, like most of antony's work are hard to judge as small images on the internet. The flowers he paints are normally very detailed, the socks on Bomber girl were a painting in themselves.
Sadly I cannot afford any of these prints, but I'll definitely be going to Laz to have a look at them, I would probably like uzi lovers 1&2 and frame them in the same frame with mount divider

Favourite New Micallef Print?, by goffy on Sept 15, 2007 12:00:23 GMT 1, The Peacekeeper is the one I prefer out of the four prints but there is no way that I would pay over a grand for a print. The only reason I would pay that much money on a print is if I was going to flip it but since I only buy things that I like and want on my wall I couldn't justify buying it. Plus I have never flipped anything in my life.

wow goffy hats off to you - do you control your purchasing really strictly to ensure there's always room for every purchase? Or do you have a load gathering dust underneath your bed? I'd love to be able to say the same but quite honestly if I never sold anything I'd have too many under my bed and no money to buy any new work...
