6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by snausages on Jan 19, 2009 18:46:27 GMT 1, Soup Can is regular colourway.
I could add a little extra. But if someone has a canvas and needs cash, this way they could sell some of the prints, have some cash and still have some signed Banksy's. Win win!

I don't need to justify anything. And remember, I didn't say a word when you offered your only months old Faile Confessions stencil on this forum. (for a ridiculously high price as well mind you)

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by Winter on Jan 19, 2009 20:15:20 GMT 1, Why don't you sell the prints to raise the money. Once you have sold them you'll be in a stronger position. Cash is king and all that. Out of interest, what price do Banksy canvases start?

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by snausages on Jan 19, 2009 20:22:05 GMT 1, Well, I don't want to sell them all in the case that I won't be able to find a canvas. Then I'll be out both prints and a canvas.
And prices? Hard to say after the market crashed. There is a mosquito at Sothebys in February estimated at ยฃ10-15k, Kids on Guns estimated at ยฃ20k, be interesting to see what they sell for now.

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by snausages on Jan 19, 2009 23:23:21 GMT 1, It's a long shot I know. ;D I could add a bit of cash or another print.
But a larger 3 foot by 3 foot unique Banksy on canvas failed to find a buyer at Christies 2 months ago with a reserve of ยฃ30k. tinyurl.com/7kn4u4 So I honestly think it puts these smaller editioned canvases more in the 15k range now. But they are scarce for sure.

Snausages, I feel that these estimates are extremely low. I find that Sothebys always have low estimates to draw interest, then sell for two or three times the estimates (at least in the past auctions)
I've also been after a Heavy weaponry for some time, but think the reality is, unless you have 25k it will only be wishful thinking.
I do wish you luck however on your search

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by snausages on Jan 20, 2009 3:24:57 GMT 1, Thanks JB โ although I'm sure my request here will be fruitless.
But if I had ยฃ25k, I would have bought that monkey detonator canvas that was at Christies, 3 times the size of heavy weaponry and unique. I tend to think the days of Banksys selling for 2, 3, 4 x estimates are over for awhile, but we'll find out in a month.

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by lee3 on Jan 20, 2009 5:56:55 GMT 1, >>> I would have bought that monkey detonator canvas that was at Christies<<<
It was on wood (that makes no difference to me personally but it does to many collectors) and the condition report did not read well. Always make sure you ask for a condition report before you decide whether or not to bid on something.
>>>yes -- I am anticipating this sale, especially the kids on guns as the last one at sotheby's was estimated at 20-30K and sold for over 100K<<
To be fair, that was the peak of Banksy pricing in Oct/Nov of '07 if memory serves. I don't believe any other edititioned piece has seen over 80k since (at auction) with most lucky to see half that amount. I'll be surprised if that brings in more than 40k in this climate. Buyers market and interesting times...

Yes, you are out of touch w/reality. "For a canvas" - what does that mean? You pay for the medium?

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by snausages on Jan 20, 2009 19:05:48 GMT 1, Fair enough points about the condition Lee but I feel like we've seen a number of Banksy originals sell (or mostly fail to sell) in the 50-100k US dollar range the past couple months. So I think it puts these editioned canvases now more in the 20-40k USD range myself. And I think a lot of people lost touch with reality with regards to pricing over the last two years.
The problematic part is that a lot of these canvases were gobbled up by galleries who are still holding out for premiums. Even a discount at those places is still to high now imo. And many of the rest were sold to collectors for a huge premium and they may not be willing to accept or sell for a loss.

...that may be true, but honestly, if someone offered me a Banksy mosquito canvas for my 6 signed Banksy prints, I wouldn't jump at it. If it was a great image (like heavy weaponry) I feel I'm maybe a couple prints short, but once we get over 20k usd I have a huge list of contemporary artists with great reputations and careers that I'd rather buy at that price than a small multiple edition canvas...

This is absolutely true as it is with Warhol and many auctionable others. Take a look at our global stock markets to get an idea about the carnage in the streets right now and getting a pretty painting for the living room is a lot less important than putting food on the table for many these days.
>>>So I think it puts these editioned canvases now more in the 20-40k USD range myself.<<<
I agree wholeheartedly with this notion 3 months ago. I really have no idea what the further deterioration in the global marketplace means dollar wise to those canvases but I do know that it's not bullish.
>>>The problematic part is that a lot of these canvases were gobbled up by galleries who are still holding out for premiums.<<<
I don't know who's problem that is unless you are saying that makes life difficult for the potential acquirer.
>>Even a discount at those places is still to high now imo. And many of the rest were sold to collectors for a huge premium and they may not be willing to accept or sell for a loss. <<<
You're absolutely right on that notion. I can only offer my viewpoint which is admittedly small but i bought an edition HW about a year ago whose value today (in pounds and dollars) is woth less than half what I paid. Similarly, just about every asset class has seen a 30 to 60% decline on average so its not like you're alone there. The few places to hide were cash and gold. Many of the art dealers that I speak with have lowered their asking prices DRAMATICALLY in the face of this news so I think it does one well to look around. Still, at the end of the day your point is correct above. There are many owners of these eidtioned works who bought them because they like the art work and not for specualtion. Therefore, it makes sense that it's going to be MORE difficult to buy those works from those owners in this climate than in one where prices are appreciating unless the owner has gotten into their own financial difficulties.
At the end of the day, with the exception of 1998 for the 10 years that I've been collecting art, this is the very best year to buy it imho. You get more quality for your currency than ever before. Still, you owe it to yourself to ask whether or not your purchase today will look very expensive by comparisson in 5 years, unless you are one of the lucky few who have more money than time.

6 Banksy prints for 1 Banksy canvas!!!, by junkieart on Jan 20, 2009 23:04:02 GMT 1, Hey Lee, nice level headed post as usual. Who knows what's going to happen in anything anymore. Last year I had Acoris chasing after my signed WSM, QV and HAND for silly money (at well over 10k each). 8 months on how things have changed. The world/UK costs are leveling out to a more realistic pricing in everything, as you say having something nice on the wall is the least of most peoples problems. Myself included, running a small business in these times are hard! Until the f'ing banks start to lend the money we have lent them we're all in trouble imo (But don't want to start on that!). Anyway less of my troubles, good look with the search, I think if the canvases are down the prints will be hit harder? Here's to a brighter 09. Peace JA
