Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by Nick on Mar 10, 2014 1:26:52 GMT 1, After reading this i definitely need to get my prints out the tubes and into a portfolio. Is there a brand or product that any of you recommend? Some of the prints i own are fairly big and wont fit into the standard 'art' portfolios you find on the likes of Amazon.
Any suggestions would be well received. Many Thanks!

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by Nick on Mar 10, 2014 17:40:18 GMT 1, Thanks for the replies.
What i am really looking for is a portfolio that is bigger than A1. One of the zip up types where a ring binder can hold the sleeves. The biggest i can find is A1 but some of my prints have sides longer than 100cm.
Does anyone own or know of such a product or do you just keep the large ones in separate sleeves in a rack?
Thanks!

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by jusdeep on Mar 10, 2014 18:24:49 GMT 1, Get it framed. Printers have various tricks and machines for flattening prints. Also new techniques for floating prints to attach them to backing using reversible glue heat presses. If you want to go down the portfolio route, buy architecture map/print sleeves which are of archival quality, or sleeved and sandwiched between two pieces of board. Make sure you cover the entire print uncurl for a week or so and leave light books for the same until the paper relaxes.

Not conservation standards though at a guess. I suppose it's something like that but definitely not dry mounting, which would damage the print. I was told by my framer it is a glue of sorts that's thinly applied to the mount in a film and then when heated becomes attach/detachable, using a kind of heated vacuum. Some kind of new'ish method which eliminates wavy float mounted prints. I didn't end up using it as I was sceptical and would definitely do some more research before using this method. But it sounded very interesting in a geeky framer type of way.
โฆand apparently it is safe and archival

I use the large map and print sleeves when needed, they are fairly thick and robust. Not too cheap but worthwhile investment to protect anything that is not framed...

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by tech on Mar 16, 2014 22:14:58 GMT 1, I'm not sure about anyone else but I always seem to have trouble flattening prints which are printed on the somerset velvet cotton rag paper Do you leave then rolled out of the tube for a while first? I usually put poster weights on each corner when first unrolled so i'll try this from now on to let the paper relax better.
Thanks!

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by waXology on Mar 18, 2014 18:08:14 GMT 1, So my 2 cents. I removed my prints from their tubes and let them rest. i think it was for about 2 months in a room i wasn't using. The change over the 2 months was massive. from curling up when i took them out to being able to lay flat with just the edges curled by the end. Again it depends on the paper it's printed on.
Everything I've ever been told is that forcing it down between boards and putting weights on the end breaks fibres in the paper. You're best to let them rest on their own for as long as you can and then put them into a sleeve. In my case i bought an a0 portfolio and had some sleeves made up by Mapac (search this forum for Mapac there's a few threads). Mapac were great. gave them my dimensions and they had them custom made and delivered.
My prints are nicely flat. Took one out over the weekend and it is like it had never been tubed!
I think the biggest takeaway here is do not force it flat. let it rest for as long as you can!
good luck

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by JAlternatiรณn on Apr 26, 2014 12:15:17 GMT 1, Anyone know of a professional print flattener I can take one to? Got one print that a previous owner must have kept tubed for a couple of years and even 3 months on it's still curling at the edges, really want to get it floated so need it properly flat and the usual resting/flattening in portfolio just isn't working with this. Am based in Cambridge, so realistically looking for somewhere in London

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by Balboa on Aug 23, 2014 16:11:07 GMT 1, Bought an item described as 'mint' but it has what I consider to be a small crease.
The seller is refusing to refund. I have made a paypal claim because it is not what I paid for.
If I end up stuck with it, does anyone know if it can be restored? If so, approximately how much would the service cost?
Many thanks.

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by johnnyh on Aug 23, 2014 16:28:34 GMT 1, If in London take to Graham Bignell and he will sort it not sure on pricing but can give you contact if u pm
Also depends on piece wether it's worth the trouble. Eg if not a signed Banksy type piece not sure I'd bother if a tiny crease
Agree if mint should not have been there but if not a top value piece flattening will be an additional percentage of the print price. Understand the OCD bit but if the print is not likely to rise in value etc so needs care etc. is it worth the money and hassle when if small not really noticeable

Flattening Prints โข Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by maddoghoek100 on Aug 25, 2014 21:27:19 GMT 1, generally reparable BUT you should be aware that most flattening processes to repair the crease will make the print look pristine BUT it can never be rolled again. so if you are buying to frame and keep forever it may be well worth it. If you are buying to have for a while and will likely resell make sure it is something you want to ship flat.
lots of small issues like that can be burnished out

If you just repeat it 4 times, it balances quite nicely.
