DIY Framing, by eddiedangerous on Jun 14, 2008 20:38:05 GMT 1, I've been wanting to frame several prints, which although worth very little still have a place on my walls! the main problem getting them there has inevitably been the cost of framing...
and so to frame a £20 print looked like costing £100 plus, I took it into my hands to start nosing around antique shops junk shops and just about anywhere.
After stepping into over 15 "framing" shops in the last week or so, I have discovered none sell frames themselves, they only offer a framing service, some fast, some slow. UV, float mount, archival etc etc its all there, but for a £20 print, im not really too bothered!!
Dont get me wrong the expensive stuff is straight down the professionals however habitat selfridges and ikea seem to be the only walk-in options (ie not internet) for pre made non-bespoke frames.
This thread is dedicated to amature framing, I want your links to cheap frame shops (not "framers"), tip offs to great frame shops, i wanna see your diy attemps I want the good stories (and photos, lots of photos!!!) and the bad stories so ultimately the idea is to get those lonely prints out of portfoilios and tubes up onto walls where they belong!!! Its worth it in the end!!
Easy Now!!

DIY Framing, by felix on Jun 15, 2008 13:33:44 GMT 1, Habitat always comes trumps for me, especially in their sales - 50x70cm frames for around £15. I always make sure the prints are in tight, with some hard backing, so they don't ripple. I have found that they preserve well being flat up against the glass, but wouldn't recommend with more expensive prints

DIY Framing, by warbs on Jun 15, 2008 19:09:13 GMT 1, I used www.picturelizard.co.uk for a completely custom frame.
This picture isn't quite square, but the mount and frame are all in proportion. I seem to remember this (the frame and mounts) cost about £60:
first attempt I managed to remove the mount from the order.
When I spoke to them they made it up and sent it to me, but it got damaged in transit, so they sent me another.
Very happy with their customer service and the product.
I'd recommend them.

DIY Framing, by marshman on Jun 16, 2008 11:05:39 GMT 1, Great thread, I made a frame for a friend for the red shat-at out of old scaffold boards that I ripped in half, mitred, rebated then stained walnut. I cannot find a picutre though and it is at my mate's place so won't be able to post one until I go there in August or make one for my own piece......

DIY Framing, by Mister Frame Man on Jun 16, 2008 11:20:53 GMT 1, Great thread......I have been meaning to do something like this for ages but just haven't got round to it!
You all know by now that we offer a conservation framing service for your valuable high end prints. However we also have a workshop catering for the general public through our shops in Norwich and Cambridge which is not such a high end service. We can make any size frame with or without mount, with UV glass or standard glass, with backing board and supply tapes and hinges for self mounting etc etc etc!
For example I can provide: Frame 60x80cm with mount £30.00 Frame 50x70cm with mount £25.00 Frame 40x50cm with mount £20.00
Bespoke sizes also not a problem - ANY SIZE AVAILABLE!
For a quote please mail me at: gary@photographyframing.co.uk with the following info
Mount Size, Frame Size, Glass Type, frame Colour & Extra Materials Required - I can the get back to you with a price.
Please do not confuse this with our framing service as the materials are not conservation and I would not recommend these frames for your "special" prints!
Bad News: Carriage would be £12.95, but if ordering a couple of frames that's not so bad!
Good News: Delivery could be next day if required!
Many Thanks
Gary

DIY Framing, by jamieb on Jun 16, 2008 17:47:15 GMT 1, I've just bought a band clamp and pushmaster tool that inserts the corner v's and pins in the back of frames, got a mate who can make me simple mouldings at work, so going to give to whole DIY thing a go for my less expensive prints. I'll post some pics of progress.

DIY Framing, by seidbereit on Jul 1, 2008 11:03:58 GMT 1, For odd shaped prints (i.e. elongated ones like the L.E.T. print Edge Art has just released) you could also go to Ikea and buy one of their mirrors for £50 odd quid and just take the mirror out of it. Was looking at a few of them yesterday (only went in there for a load of them dead tasty biccies they have) and there are loads of them with gilt or silver coloured frames which would be perfect for the job. Loads of other independent furniture shops seem to have really cheap mirrors in large fancy frames too, just have to hav a look around and see things slightly differently.

DIY Framing, by jamieb on Jul 1, 2008 11:47:57 GMT 1, Here's the frame I put together myself, had a mate do to moulding for me, and bought the tools to put it together then sprayed got a bit of glass, acid free mountboard etc. and the appropriate tapes to float mount.
Pretty pleased with it all, not including tools it cost about £20.
Only shame is the Bast print is well wobbly, guess that's down to bast.
sorry about the crap camera phone pics.

DIY Framing, by APM on May 27, 2010 20:57:53 GMT 1, Due to me being a poor artist (ha!).. Well, I mount and frame my own pictures, I couldn't really compare them to stuff done professionaly, but either way I don't think I do a bad job... I invested in a Logan mount/bevel cutter, which comes with a 24" rule... Wasn't too expsensive (around £30 or 40 I think)... Cost of mount board is £3 a sheet, so judging on that I know I've saved hundreds of pounds... Cutting mounts isn't too challenging, just involves a bit of labour and patience working out measurements etc.. All that being said, I'm now doing larger pieces, and have just recieved some A0 mount board, and ordered a 40" ruler for the Logan mount cutter, I don't think anything will go too wrong!
So that's the mounts sorted, not too much hassle to D.I.Y plus the costs you save are increddible... As for frames, well, I now regulary go to carboot sales, charity shops, etc... Lots of cheap frames and occasionaly you'll come across a very nice one, for a fraction of the price it would cost if it were bespoke... So yeah, I do pieces purposely to fit frames I have already bought! A slight problem one might occur, is the fact the colour of the frame is awful... I'm in a 'phase' so to speak where all my inner mounts are silver, outter mounts are black, and the frame is silver....So, I spray the frame silver with spray paint, but in my opinion it looks far too 'fake' looking, just not very nice... I personally love old, worn looking type frames, frames with character... So to 'age' them up, I use transparent black Belton paint, spray it on in small sections, and rub off with a cloth- all the transparent paint is then left in little grooves and ridges etc... How much you want to do that is up to you, if it all.. Here's a few examples of some D.I.Y stuff:
£10 for the pair of frames - then repainted £12 for 4 sheets of mount board
£10 for the frame, slightly damaged (late 19th century!) - then repainted and damaged parts filled and shaped with filler £6 for 2 sheets of mount board £5 for sheet of glass - cut to size by myself
£5 for frame (was very large!). My father is an antiques dealer/picture dealer/painting restorer, and luckily for me I have a mytering cutter to chop frames, so this frame was cut to fit. The glass was also cut down to fit the new size of the frame. £6 for 2 sheets of mount board...
I hope this helps a few people, or gives a few ideas for more cost cutting... There still has been occasions with old loose works I couldn't source frames for, and had to resort to getting them done properly... Really does hurt the pocket!

DIY Framing, by APM on May 30, 2010 12:11:51 GMT 1, This is what I was talking about, went to the local massive Sunday carboot this morning and got these:
The paint job is a bit thick/gobby... Definitely needs a bit of sorting out in that area, aswell as obviously getting glass cut for the pair too.. Still, paid £55 for the lot and met a very valuable contact. Good frames at a super cheap price, going to his warehouse somepoint in the comming week to source more frames for old pieces, rad!

DIY Framing, by APM on Jun 13, 2010 13:56:26 GMT 1, Went to the carboot this morning and got a gem.. Monster of a frame, really nice moulding which isn't too flash, but it has somthing about it and it's somthing I've not seen before... It is a really big size, couldn't say exactly, it has glass and already has a double mount in it for the print it has in, not that i'd be using it but still... All in all this frame new would of be well over a couple hundred, and I got it for £4....annnnnnd that's how it's done! Stoked
