Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by leephill on Sept 1, 2009 21:22:48 GMT 1, It is quite interesting to compare the two banksy canvasses. The upcoming auction is a lot rawer in terms of the image wheras the 108k canvas is much sharper and crisper. Each to their own but I prefer the rawer image.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by dudebro17 on Sept 2, 2009 13:52:04 GMT 1, gorgeous Parla vs iconic Banksy. Goodluck to both sellers.
One thing I still dont get is why that lady snausages is always so negative. She calls Parla decorative art, but isn't that a bit of an exaggeration? There is more soul in a square inch of his work than most current work I see. I guess people are looking for different things in the work they collect. His work radiates the passion and energy of the cities they portray. All I know is that id love for that to be a part of my day to day life.
As iconic as the Banksy is and as important as he may be or become, Im already tired of the image.
You may be able to argue which is the better investment, but I have an extremely hard time believing anyone would tire or grow out of that Parla before the laugh now.

Spot on Dudebro. I for one would grow tired of the Parla quickly over the Banksy but of course thats just me, the Monkey just looks more fun to me simply speaking.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by curiousgeorge on Sept 2, 2009 15:05:07 GMT 1, I've come back to this thread a dozen times and still can't choose between the two, both totally different beasts
"I guess people are looking for different things in the work they collect. His work radiates the passion and energy of the cities they portray. All I know is that id love for that to be a part of my day to day life"
Totally agree
For me waking up and seeing the Parla everyday would be life-changing, that said the Laugh Now is totally iconic and i would probably have sex-wee in equal measure having either on the wall

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by topper007 on Sept 2, 2009 15:25:37 GMT 1, Agreed, they don't sit very comfortably with the rest of the lots.....having said that, the Parla is stunning.......
I think this is the bigger point here. Maybe Bonhams believe that the urban/street art auctions they put on before, where some filler pieces that they normally would be caught dead selling just happened to raise good prices because of a bubble market in "street" art, have had their day (aka won't make Bonhams good commission any more). So now they're putting what they see as the more established urban/street artists in a more general contemporary art auction to broaden the appeal of those auctions while not ignoring urban/street art completely.
However, I do agree with the comment that the auction overall is not blessed with quality pieces. So perhaps they just can't find willing sellers right now and this is the best they can do?
Oh and if I had to choose......Parla.....no Banksy....no Parla...f**k it..... both!! A man can dream after all.

Agreed, both cracking pieces. I started off rating the Parla so much more than the Banksy; my heart tells me the Parla because it oozes class, my head tells me the Banksy as I personally think that this will one day be worth many multiples than what it sells for this month. Buy the Banksy, sell it in 15 years and buy many many Parlas

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by silvermyn on Sept 2, 2009 16:39:42 GMT 1, If memory serves Dreweats sold that Banksy Monkey Detonator on plyboard for £40k about a year ago. It just made the reserve.
Based on that IMO this canvas will struggle to break the £40k but we'll find out how things are shaping up out there soon enough.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by lee3 on Sept 2, 2009 16:44:41 GMT 1, >>> So perhaps they just can't find willing sellers right now and this is the best they can do?<<<
I suspect there is no lack of sellers given the economic climate facing us all. However, it's a September sale and the houses and sellers alike are going to save 90% of the quality for Oct/Nov. They'll pick out a handful of star items and try and push them into September by telling the consignors that they will be the stars of the show- which is true. The facts are that most of the September art wouldn't make it into the later sales save for the obvious pieces.
I believe most sellers would do better to wait a month when everyone's eyes are on the art market (though probably not a bad idea to be the one lone Banksy seller with that image after the Bristol show). I question the logic of placing these at the end of the sale and would love an education as to why? Nor do I have any idea how Christie's was able to convince the owner of a 22 inch Warhol flower painting to bring it under the hammer in September instead of November. Interesting times and what a contrast to a year (or 5) ago.
