Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by Francis on Sept 5, 2009 8:16:21 GMT 1, There is nothing interesting, unique, or original about the Parla. It is pretty standard graffiti style mixed with abstract painting cliche. If you had it, you would probably want to get rid of it after a couple of months.

If I was lucky enough to own a large Parla piece and could afford to keep it, I would think it was a piece I would never sell.
Horses for courses.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by stjohn on Sept 7, 2009 9:12:57 GMT 1, Another Parla (or 3) up at Sotheby's the day after Bonhams sale!
Sorry can't post piccie.
www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=159541890
Same size as Bonhams, but in three pieces. Very early work and yet pricing is roughly ยฃ15,250 - ยฃ21,300 as a Sterling estimate vs. ยฃ25,000 - ยฃ35,000 at Bonhams.
Prefer the Bonhams piece overall, but Sotheby's one is really good at showing the genesis of his work from a pure 'writings' point of view. You can see 7 years between the two pieces.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by G-Man on Sept 7, 2009 12:16:18 GMT 1, IMO Parla has developed a very good sense of texture and depth in his work whilst still retaining all the elements of his grafitti style
The interpretation of natural textures and abstract nature of his canvases sets off some great calligraphy amounting to some truly amazing work that has both appreciation in the street scene and the general art world
I love them

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by artstylee on Sept 8, 2009 17:01:24 GMT 1, parla is an OG graffitti artist. And is really respected in that realm.
So his transition to Fine Gallery art was received with open arms. I don't get the $10,000+ price tags. But the work is quite nice. Rhythm/Texture/Subtle color/value transitions between layers. A unique process he developed. Scribbley for sure, but I gaurantee that they look better in person than on a computer screen.
I suggest you get out to a show and see them in the flesh before you knock the style. Art isn't meant to be viewed through a laptop screen. Get out and see the real deal then develop opinions on weather or not it worked for you visually. But without seeing the original work it's difficult to hate. This type of work is meant to be viewed in person and doesn't reproduce well.
I didn't appreciate pollock until I went to MOMA and saw all of the different variations of layer and glaze/varnishes used. Pollock's (All Black Drip) pieces really change quite a bit as you walk around the piece. The light is captured differently upon each step around the piece. I have no doubt that Parla's are quite similar if you see an original in person.

I'll need to sell my watercolour to fund it though and a stack more besides.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by lee3 on Sept 11, 2009 16:41:15 GMT 1, How many Laugh Now canvasses in all forms are there?.
That's a great question and I'm going to guess that there are between 40 and 100 but that is pure speculation on my part as there could be many more. There are many on wood too. I, for one, wished more living artists completed catalogue raisonnรฉs during their life time instead of posthumously. Warhol's foundation has only printed 3 books covering the time period from '61 through '69 (and the first one was published way back in '02). They are unbelievable sources of information with photos of each work but come with a steep price tag (~$700 new for all 3). It helps that he kept perfect records during his lifetime. The last I heard the next update ('70-'73) is due out next fall if memory serves.
Given Banksy's profligacy, it would be a huge undertaking and perhaps they feel it's not worth the cost at the moment. Or perhaps they have zero interest in doing one anyway which is probably why this task is taken up by people after important artists die. I would love to look at nice photos of his work to date outside of the obvious publications we already have.

Banksy vs Parla @ Bonhams, by wizzy on Sept 11, 2009 17:22:11 GMT 1, 40 - 100?, thats a great auctioneer goers range there Lee!, i know what you mean though, it would however be handy to have some kind of catalogue / inventory of his work to reference including all the editions and shows etc., maybe someone could do one some day esp. for people like myself who have happened on his work somewhat later than some.
