Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by raiden on Aug 20, 2009 5:52:24 GMT 1, Better than 95% of what he puts out - its slightly smarter than his usual: merely throw paint at an image, photoshop, print repeat.
But $450? Really?
He isn't getting much above his original price on the 'bay these days anyways and MBW has a large cadre of uncommitted flippers out gobbling up his prodigious release schedule and keeping his stuff in tubes, wanting to unload it.
We'll see how London goes for him. I'm personally curious to see how the much more graffiti art literate populace of London accepts his work and his circus act of highly produced shows.
I can't imagine it will go better than LA did for him, but then again, I can't imagine it going particularly poorly either - the problem in MBWs case is that he's so hype oriented, that unless it goes better than average, the house of cards that is his market could crash down.
I don't think he'll get the friendly reviews that his LA home tagging ground press gave him nor will he benefit from the uneducated adulation of Carson Daly types.
Still, I expect he'll shill bid a piece of his to absurdity at Bonhams this fall - so the market (dare I say bubble) for MBW is sadly still in its infancy.

Ohhhhh madonna. have you seen her arms for fcks sake....... He may have ripped off Rene but I think he did a way better job with it. So be it. Hirst and many artists are guilty of ripping people off. If Rene couldn't make more out of his career than what he has don't blame MBW.
Still think MBW's Urinal, Tomato Spray prints and Warhol Marilyn knock ups are aces and better than most of the artists talked about on here, but then again he's put out some prints that are absolutely horrible. Was a little sad I didn't buy the Warhol/Marilyn couple weeks back, but I don't know if I want to hang art in my place by anyone who also releases work that is such tripe.

Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by raiden on Aug 20, 2009 23:05:35 GMT 1, I agree the Urinal and the Warhol Marilyn were his only good pieces at a show featuring literally thousands of pieces. Personally, I attribute this more to "throw enough s**t on a wall, eventually some of it sticks." But lets be clear, he wasn't the first to do Campbells spray can, Rene Gagnon had him beat.
Snausages... Its f##ked up that you diss on Rene... He hasn't made it bigger because he wasn't a trust fund type who shelled out $100K to produce a giant monstrosity of an art show... Rene is a hard working artist with tons more talent than MBW ever will in my opinion - and if he had MBWs resources, he'd kick his ass.
I blame MBW for jacking other artists ideas and being a total hype job. We'll eventually see how things play out.
It shouldn't be about how much money you have, or what publicity machine you can afford, it should be about how much talent you have. (I grant, I'm not so idealistic to think that's everything, but I'm sickened when people start making the case "who cares about his talent, he's the better promoter as an artist." Thomas Kinkade is a great promoter too)
Honestly, I've talked to both guys at some length... Thierry (MBW) is a vapid, egoist. Rene is a very diligent, hard working, unbelievably nice guy to deal with. Now I want to see him succeed that much more just because you'd say something as f**ked up as "If Rene couldn't make more out of his career than what he has don't blame MBW." (You do know Rene is the one who actually reads this board and gives a s**t about his fans, whereas Thierry promises the moon, talks a good game, plays himself off like he's the nicest guy in the world but when all is said and done I really wonder if he gives a s**t.)

Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by monkeyballs on Aug 20, 2009 23:30:28 GMT 1, But isn't the hype and the blatant stealing of everything from image to idea the very point of what this is about?
I want nothing that he produces, but perhaps that is the very point? If so, a very very important artist. We are all these days so jaded by media. A simple google search shows his tired approach, but that is what the educated do, of which there are less and less.
This could be the best anti media statement ever, I produce nothing original, but you know (general public) very little these days other than immediate soundbytes, columns in papers etc. You're dumb enough to swallow this because I am in your magazines, your album covers, your daily celebrity dirt columns. You are dumb and the art is in exposing this.
It takes a lot of money to do this, but it makes more and more sense to me the more he offends the educated.

He hasn't made it bigger because he wasn't a trust fund type But why is it ok for everyone to dis on MBW but not Rene? Anyway it wasn't my intention to dis Rene, but I don't think throwing money at a show for him would not have the same effect and unfortunately or not being an egoist is probably an advantage in this field, a nice guy, maybe not.
