Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by Simococo on Aug 21, 2009 14:15:10 GMT 1, still can't believe people buy this stuff he ripped off rene and lobbed money at his shows and somehow has a career this is the end of civilization and madonna. Ohhhhh madonna. have you seen her arms for fcks sake....... He may have ripped off Rene but I think he did a way better job with it. So be it. Hirst and many artists are guilty of ripping people off. If Rene couldn't make more out of his career than what he has don't blame MBW.
i think the technical term is biting and whether you think he did a better job is irrelevant.
The fact that Hirst rips off other peoples work is also not relevant to this discussion.
MBW would have worked for me if his LA show was the beginning, middle and end of his street art parody but it wasn't its just a scam to take kids cash over and over again which is not acceptable.
I believe Banksy's and Sheps view reflects this too
I don't remember talking about Rene's career.

More intersting tho is that the work looks a higher calibre than the dross churned out through his website. still icons & the usual granted.
that spraycan would look good in any of our palatial belair mansions ;D

Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by rash on Aug 22, 2009 12:33:41 GMT 1, i agree with Existencil, doesn't matter what you say about MBW whether your views are good or bad he has already done what he's set out to do, he has a massive fan base with pieces that sell out very quick, even flipped selling on the bay for three times the price, and has created a debate many with different views but even if you don't like the guy or his work he has you all talking.
Personally i think his works great, and have even brought a print (amazing in the flesh) i think you've all checked out his website and thats what he wants, some of you may even go to his London show.
At the end of the day if he was really that talentless would there be people on here having this discussion wasting your time to slag the guy off when in actual fact he's doing really well, so what if he is using others ideas and re creating them in his own ways, he's not the first to do this and wont be the last.

Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by brun on Aug 22, 2009 13:05:20 GMT 1, no talent in ideas which are stolen, rather blatant imaging , fairly unimaginative , probably got some financial backers and a team working on "his" style .......bansky took the warhol can and branded it 'tescos own label" in a statement purely british . i personally feel anyone can make this kind of borrowed image art with the right backing and basic ideas , thats why i like it , perhaps mr wash has found a niche in the american market whos desire for cool street art holds no boundaries but his work is shallow in comparison to many others , and vastly overpriced !

Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by bojangles on Aug 22, 2009 13:39:45 GMT 1, i agree to an extent with u brun. & i will never buy a piece of mr brainwash if they continue to look like they have. Not my cup of tea at all.
Banksy is in a completley different echelon, he is quite special, so a comparison cannot be made. But with the likes of shepard fairey many of his works, indeed a lot of his works are blantant plagiarism of propaganda imagery from china and the former soviet state. They are undoubtedly beautiful but nevertheless you could argue, as they are near perfect copies, that they too lack imagination, talent and creativity from the artist.
even his synonomous andre the giant face is just andre the giants face. i think both are the ultimate example post modern art.
Where brainwash lacks, i feel, is the fact that he has followed artists like Obey. He didn't think of it first, which will and has inevitably opened him up to much criticism as a kind of hanger-on.
god dam too much time spent pondering brainwash! But he is one of those cases which for me throws up utter bewilderment at why people are so taken with his stuff i need a rationale to understand it and i can't so therefore i will continue to try and comprehend it all.

Mr Brainwash โข Max Spray Print, by rash on Aug 22, 2009 14:09:59 GMT 1, exactly, others artists have used previous ideas and used it to there own advantages creating something different, as above already stated "bansky took the warhol can and branded it 'tescos own label" in a statement purely british" but why is this ok?... because its Banksy? (everyone hold you horses i like banksy)
All artists have done it even if its not obvious artists research everything around them before creating an idea but them ideas have still been bounced off something that have already been done especially when most street art is based around imagery.

At least make it look right. The only artist MBW is is a CON-ARTIST.

its not because its banksy , its because it was a twist on the original warhol never seen before and a statement about a depressed land that is very much britain......and he was the first to twist the warhol in a clever way . MBW copies those mundane ideas but they are still totally mundane when he finishes . his obama / marilyn is shockingly bad . another idea nicked from banksy who nicked from warhol , also i note the blek copies on his site , far too obvious .....far far better artists out there who dont ram it down peoples throats!

Yep, it's mine, I grew up by the sea but now live inland and this painting takes me back to the windswept beaches where I used to spend all my spare time fishing, smoking dope and drinking cider, her body reminds me of the gnarled old driftwood that used to wash ashore on a stormy day, it's not hanging at the moment, but when my stairs are finally painted I will squeeze it in there somewhere....

But to say it's shockingly bad? Different strokes for different folks. But I think that's one of his more successful series (which is relative of course.) But I think it's interesting he's making fun of Banksy and artists who relentlessly pay homage to Warhol. He's really lambasting and skewering the concept of remixing Warhol by picking such ridiculous subject matter as opposed to Banksys more tasteful (even if ironic) update. MBW's take is kind of funny and it all deserves to be made fun of at this point.
You have to think of MBW like a John Waters movie, or any film that relishes in it's campiness and exploitation of pop culture. But as far as fine taste goes it's several grades lower than Banksy โ he's basically the Roger Corman of Urban Art.
I don't have too much issue when MBW exploits ideas and pop culture. My issue with MBW is that he puts out so much art that is visually unappealing, boring, or has no concept.
