Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by jonpud on Apr 15, 2008 17:53:42 GMT 1, Graeme, and others!
Just before this gets a little nasty I would like to add my tuppence worth!
I went to meet with Nick earlier this month as many of you know, it was to complete a purchase based on an agreement made last October(ish) time.
A lot happened inbetween October and April, Nick's sell out show, Bonhams etc. Nick's site has been available and open to everyone on this site for several years, canvas's remained unsold at £2k each, prints available for £50.00 etc. Where were all the Walker supporters back then?
How was Nick to forcast the Bonham's auction, after all it was a private seller who put up his canvas for sale and the audience went mad for it! It was probably bought by one of the 'suits' who didn't know what he was buying let alone know anything about the artist who created it! Anyway, it's safe to say that things went f**king mental for Nick after that sale, his website was not geared up for the interest that followed, after all it served it's purpose for years assisting a fairly small time artist to make a living. Suddenly everyone wanted a piece, Nick was bombarded by emails from people who had NEVER before paid an interest in his work, his inbox was full and so they were rebounding to the senders. All this time, Nick and his family were in LA promoting his show, I doubt very much if he made a fortune from sales in LA, no doubt it was worth his while but having an insite as to what these things cost to set up then I guess the Nett profit wasn't a life changing sum!
Anyway, Nick got back from LA to face a mountain of Emails to deal with, as far as I can tell he sold whatever he had on a first come first served basis, any FIRM agreements he stood by (and yes that includes the agreement he made with me) Unfortunately a lot of people missed out, some of them genuine collectors who probably thought this was the last chance to obtain a Walker for sensible money but mostly the people who lost out were the flippers and scum out to make a quick buck!
Nick was gutted that he had to let so many people down, the abusive comments and Emails he received were unbeleivable, he also had 'begging' letters from individuals whose mothers were diagnosed with cancer etc. Nick has done his bit for charity in the past and no doubt will do again in the future, but charity is also a private thing and can cause you all sorts of distress when having to turn people down, running a company I know well how hard it is to accommodate ALL the requests you get in a year!!
I have probably gone to far here and said more than Nick would have liked me too, but I feel that another side to the argument aught to be added before a kangaroo court decides Nick's fate!
I am pleased that Nick's work is now receiving the recognition that it has IMO deserved for a couple of years now, I am also pissed off that his success has now robbed me of the chance to buy any future works by the guy, I stated this comment to Nick and he understood fully but at the end of the day it's not him who has decided his fate, it's us and the Flippers! No f**king wonder Banksy keeps his identity a secret!
I will be in the Q on Thursday along with everyone else trying to get lucky, like many I am guessing I will miss out on all 3 of the releases! If the canvas's are sold, then they are sold! All I can say is that I am looking fprward to seeing his original work in the flesh, I am looking forward to meeting Nick again, a man who has remained genuine and as open to all as he possibly could be considering the circumstances, I am also looking forward to having a beer and meeting up with some of you guys!
Lets get this all into perspective, enjoy the art for what it is and get behind the creator! Just remember its US that made the monster!
Think thats about 50p, not tuppence!!!

Colour, interior etc etc But i agree to points about one of canvasses All i was saying is, being friendly with your gallery or car dealer does help when getting certain thing si.e. f430 scuderia/f70 (the facelift of the enzo 2011)

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by graeme501 on Apr 15, 2008 18:08:44 GMT 1, hey pud
ill b the the q aswell ;D
i agree with what u have said, im sure nick is a great guy, i just feel that when artists get successful, its sometimes the true fans that have supported the artist that will miss out
its great that u got ur piece from nick, but others havent been so lucky so i guess there really are 2 sides to every story
the main thing that dissapoints me is that the gallery selling some canvases already, which will have deprived some fans that were willing to q up for hours in order to get a canvas, why should money send u straight to the front of the q ? it seems odd when street art by definition suppose 2 b for everyone, but recently this has not been the case - its now who u know, and more importantly, how much can u spend
i couldnt afford a canvas, but i feel for people who had their heart set on one, and have now found out that some have been presold
anyway enough of this, bring on the q'ing ;D

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by richy00 on Apr 15, 2008 18:12:57 GMT 1, i shalnt be in the que as im not keen at all on the butterfly, so i shall be trying my luck in the bunfight on BRP website for a TMA. BRP are great guys but it does annoy me watching the suits walking to the front pre show, though at the print show most things were available to buy at the preview.

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by fatherxmas on Apr 15, 2008 18:17:44 GMT 1, I can agree with everything everyone has said but to the average normal persons like us. Spending just say 2500 on a piece of art let aloen 25k is a hell of alot of money speciality in todays climate. Gallerys are there to make money, they ahve high rents and need to achieve as much money as possible. People with money dont like to wait for anything hence premiums on cars/watches/boats/planes Just likeart work i guess, they come down after work from canary whaft and walk in and basiclly say "i'll have that that and that" simple and walk out. Gallery owners love this, but im sure when they walk out there getting slagged off as they are not the true punter and just want the next big thing to gloat to there mates about. Ive got the car, got the boat, got the big house, got the watch and got a Banksy just say but in this case nick walker. Most people on thursday will be there to look at the art and hopefully get a print but are not relistically there as the serious buyer of a 20k canvass just say cos if you are you would have bought it by now and not "prayin" seeing if youre gonna get one

Nick and Jacqueline will be at the show, I just hope we can support him in his success and enjoy what should be a great evening!

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by graeme501 on Apr 15, 2008 18:20:46 GMT 1, graeme the point is say for example i spent 20k over a year in a gallery over a few different artists. why should i not get first viewing over work than someone that is new to the scene? would i not be pissed off that i have to queue? this is an example
why shouldn't someone who has spend 20k queue ? he is no different to the next guy in the queue, apart from the fact he has more money, the newcommers will never have a chance, coz when they get in, its sold out
and trying hard here not to generalise, but most of the people spunking 20k on canvases are city bankers ect ... and new to the scene

Thing is it is no longer at most of our level, it's moved on to the next stage, yes it's sad but at least we were there at the beginning and no one can take that away from us! The City Bankers will be there and spending big money! I am now off to look more closely at Copyright, Goldie, Neverwork who are also churning out seriously good art which is still in reach for me at my level! IT MIGHT NOT BE AVAILABLE NEXT WEEK, BANKERS ONLY!!

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by graeme501 on Apr 15, 2008 18:39:56 GMT 1, agree'd bigman, but like pud says, its moving on to the next level now
i guess u've been invited back to previews because u have been buying from the early days, which is great and u deserve the chance to continue supporting artists, but how many of the people that will have been spending the big bucks will have been there, supporting the artists, when it wasnt the 'trendy thing' to be seen doing ?
i have no problem when people that have been collecting nw's work for years are invited to view and buy the work, thats only fair, but why should people flashing their cash be ushered to the front aswell ?

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by curiousgeorge on Apr 15, 2008 18:48:52 GMT 1, Not something i think is correct Graeme but like it or not CASH is KING
I have heard little snippets of info about work being sold already, like it or not that's part of scene and i would hazard a guess that most early buyers are deemed important/valuable/ useful to boosting people's profile etc
Again bottom line CASH is KING

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by graeme501 on Apr 15, 2008 18:53:56 GMT 1, yeah, i guess thats the way everything is going now, the people that will be spending the big bucks are the people that bid on auctions, and raise the profile of the artists, nw is one of the best examples of this
but he has worked hard and deserves his success
what i would say is that santas ghetto was particularly refreshing, no elitism or presales, if u could get urself over there then that was all that mattered

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by robinbanks on Apr 15, 2008 19:02:36 GMT 1, I can't believe that people are genuinely surprised that canvases will be sold before the "preview" show. How did you think it was going to work - seriously?
Galleries might not be able to do much about every man and his dog flipping their prints for 3-4x cost, but they sure as hell aint gonna let it happen to one of their prize assets originals. That sort of thing can ruin an artists career.
IMO the show will be as good as sold-out before old Joe public gets so much as a sniff of the free beer.
It's been mentioned a thousand times before on here, but if you haven't already done so, go out and read Collecting Contemporary by Adam Lindemann.

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by mred on Apr 15, 2008 19:20:42 GMT 1, Although Nick's work might now be outside most of our budgets and might end up being sold to gallery high rollers that does not mean Nick the gent has gone.
To avoid sounding like a record he was and remains a genuine guy trying to do right by everyone but unfortunately due to the massive interest he can no longer keep us all happy.
I will not be in the queue on Thursday and although I would have loved chance to get a butterfly print what I am most gutted about is I will not get chance to have quick chat with the main man and his charming wife and congratulate him on his well deserved success.
If someone offered to double your salary would you say no or take it but try and not change yourself. I for one am honest enough to admit I would go for the second option. Forget the bullshit we all at the end of the day want to look after the people special to us.

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by kahuna on Apr 15, 2008 21:15:29 GMT 1, /quote] romanywg I agree mate, but thats also my point how do you get to be a good customer if you never get the oppotunity to buy? We can all start by buying the work of the emerging artists and supporting the galleries during shows that don't yet attract flippers.

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by moleman on Apr 15, 2008 22:15:24 GMT 1, im not suprised that originals are sold and that friends of the artist get free dibs etc. BUT alot of people go on about flippers who which im sorry im sure we all do in some way or form no one keeps everything. you save for what you want or sell what you have to fund the pieces you want. we keep long term investment or art we love and sell the older ones that you no longer want. But you are happy to allow the big boys to take what they want because they have the cash and backing to do so. Which in some degree is exactly what some of the art is all about letting the big cheeses with all the money do what they like when they like and you stand by and look the other way. Im sure some of you have great contacts and have worked hard for some of your well deserved benefits but im afraid as tthe guy above said there aint nothing you can do about it they come they pay they conquer. because cash is king and most of us aint got enough, times are changing you can evolve or moan about the good old times. there not coming back from what i can see and i have not been collecting long and i want nice originals on my wall the onlyt way to do that is to let them fight over the big names and start the next big thing and support them banksy is great but i will never have one i now my limits

Couple of things...
Firstly, selling a piece you've had framed and enjoyed for a period of time is not flipping - especially if you're replacing it with a new work.
Secondly, if you think that buying an original work from a highly sort after artist is as easy as turning up at the gallery with a pocket full of money to burn then you're as naive as the one's who thought the "preview" on thursday night would be the first time they'd be available to buy.

Nick Walker show, Who will be buying a canvas?, by aginghippie on Apr 15, 2008 22:46:07 GMT 1, I can't believe that people are genuinely surprised that canvases will be sold before the "preview" show. How did you think it was going to work - seriously? Amen to that. This show and gallery aside; a gallery knows that it is selling below the market and is effectively giving you money. In return it trusts you to buy other artists it is promoting and not to flip the work. You build that trust by buying other works, by talking to them, and by establishing a track record. Flip something they sell you and you will be blacklisted by them and everyone they talk with.
