While most of us buy because we first and foremost like the images, isn't a factor that drives crazy demand the fact that they're worth more than what we paid for them? I think the influence of this factor varies from person to person, but, isn't knowing that something you bought that originally costs $50 is now worth $2k part of the allure as well? Especially as you can "trade in" that bit of paper for a mortgage payment, down payment for a house, and even original...

I generally agree with what you are saying Ninja but...
Two things that make flippers different from the rest of us:
1. Flippers don't give a toss about the art, only the money
2. Flippers resell immediately

I agree that it is the collectors that create the demand but I would say it was more of a host/parasite relationship! Symbiotic relationships are beneficial to both parties.

collecting art is an expensive pastime. i don't know how well off you all are but what if you were young & had an annual salary of say ยฃ12k. would you accept you can't afford to buy the more expensive pieces you like & stick to the ยฃ50 thread or would you do whatever it takes to afford & refine your collection? at the end of the day, people who buy off the flipper are either rich & can afford to, they flip something themselves to fund that purchase or they put themselves into serious debt (which is just silly). some of you need to get your feet firmly back on the ground!
