Football - Who going down?, by veralynn on May 24, 2009 19:55:00 GMT 1, Recall a cabbie in Newcastle telling me a story that he once pulled up at a petrol station and Lauren Robert was filling up at the other pump.
LR saw some kids in a car and bowled over to offer his autograph, when the kids declined LR asked why to which the kids replied 'cos my Dad says you're shit'.....and he was. Shearer would be barking mad to stay on hopefully his advisors will be able to talk him out of this folly,,Newcastle are on the express elevator, going down.
Off to pick my winnings up on Tuesday, thanks Mike!

Football - Who going down?, by lastpost on May 24, 2009 21:09:23 GMT 1, Incredible....I have never ever seen a team with their destiny in their own hands put so little effort in. They showed zero urgency right till the death. I honestly could not believe what I was seeing, and after that performance I fully believe they deserve to be down.

after the gers won the title, i went to my union to see the newcastle game hopeing to see a proper relegation scrap, and thought the exact same as you lastpost, no fight or effort for such an important game, they played it like a training match
deserved to go down

Football - Who going down?, by manchestermike on May 24, 2009 22:14:50 GMT 1, Can't say I'm not happy, won a few quid and on top of that have seen the most deserving team go down. I could go into a tirade about now about them but I won't I'll settle for another glass of champagne and wonder if they'll be back to getting sub-20k average attendances once again in a couple of years. Will they do another 'Leeds'... I won't be surprised and odds dependent I may be looking to back them to go down again

Football - Who going down?, by Eton Groover on May 25, 2009 9:48:08 GMT 1, Ashley has invested 230m of his own cash into Newcastle. He was looking to make a quck 100m by selling it to someone quickly, however the plan has not worked. He cannot afford to lose that kind of money by not investing back into the club to try to make his investment work.
If you were him you would have to put in another 50m or so into it to try and get it back to the prem so you could recoup as much of your initial cash back as possible.
That is why Newcastle is different to the other clubs that have gone down in the past.
I do not think Shearer is the man to do this though. I think we need a proven Championship manager with the job being just to take us back up.
We did deserve to go down and the reason we did is that Ashley never wanted to keep the club this long. He did not want to spend any more money than he had to to try to maximise his profit. He is a gambler with too much cash. Hopefully he puts some back into the club before he loses the lot.
He is a cheap market trader and employed cheap tactics that have backfired on him to try to make millions.
It's back to the drawing board for Ashley or lose the lot.... and I'm a Newcastle fan.

Football - Who going down?, by Eton Groover on May 25, 2009 10:23:18 GMT 1, Yeah, me too.
I've been there as a Newcastle supporter in late 80's early nineties
Strangely, I am looking forward to the Chamionshipship already.
Proper football supporting, revisiting old haunts and new.
The Premiership is over rated. Too predictable, too much money, too many egos.
It's going to be like a great holiday!

Football - Who going down?, by arcam1 on May 25, 2009 10:39:31 GMT 1, Since MA came he's actually in credit in the transfer market. Says it all really. The club basically had no investment in two years.
Lets hope he's learnt his lesson and is willing to back a manager. I hope Shearer stays on, we need some stability desperately and I think he's got what it takes to be a good manager. Whoever takes charge has got a tough job on his hands. It's not going to be easy shifting this squad on.

Football - Who going down?, by Eton Groover on May 25, 2009 10:45:13 GMT 1, I do not think we can take the chance on Shearer.
Despite the shortcoming of the squad one win in eight matches is poor.
No experience, no track record, it would be another folly based on nothing other than emotion to think he would be the one to lead us out of the Championship.
Ashley has now made two "emotion" based decisions and neither has worked.
Time for some decisions based on real facts and statistics.

disagree, shearer used too many players and kept on changing your squad about too much, an experianced manager would have steadied the ship, brought consistancy and picked up a few more points

He cannot sell. He is in too deep.
Like i said before, his losses will be too great to just cut and run. (unless he gets very lucky with a buyer)
He has to invest further to try to protect his investment.

What are you basing it on? Anyone who has watched us play will tell you our squad is crap. There is no pace, no creativity and without that you're screwed in the Premiership. Newcastle fans aren't surprised we've gone down. We saw it coming a long time ago. It was just a matter of when. Shearer did the best with what was available. But when the likes of having Viduka, Owen and Martins on the park doesn't get you a shot on goal then there is little he can do.

I'm sure a lot of people hope the same (re: the Barca kicking) but what you hope for and what you get aren't always the same thing... as for the Fergie comment, totally out of order and unnecessary

im basing it on the fact that i have an unbiased view, newcastle fans are so in love with shearer and cant see that he buggered up, with the experiance in that squad he should have managed more than 1 win and 1 draw in the games he was in charge
the latter stages of a relegation battle is not the time to throw in a television pundit with zero experiance as a manager to try and save the day

Love 'em or hate 'em, the mancs play very, very attractive football and Wednesday night has the potential to be a superb game. Ronaldo's a cock but he's arguably the best footballer in the world right now, I love watching MU (or Arsenal) play, reminds me of West Ham.
