Come on the Arsenal, by dslug on Apr 8, 2008 22:07:00 GMT 1, Liam Brady (Arsenal youth team and TV pundit ) is[glow=red,2,300] fuming[/glow] on Irish TV over that result and the criticism Wenger got from Souness and Eamon Dunphy (irish pundit)
He is just short of steam coming out his ears.
Arsenal are a great team but imagine what wenger would do if they actually gave him some cash

Come on the Arsenal, by bert on Apr 8, 2008 22:08:41 GMT 1, Unlucky Arsenal, very unlucky to lose that, I thought you were the better team over the two legs. Very soft pen indeed. That run from Walcott deserved to win any game.
I think the young nucleus that Wenger has built will be a strong force for many years, so the fans will have to try and be a bit patient. Nights like tonight will give them invaluable experience. Having said that, I think he needs to add some steel to the team.

Come on the Arsenal, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 9, 2008 4:41:38 GMT 1, dslug, just cause he doesn't spend it, dosn't mean he hasn't got it to spend. He has and they will win nothing this year! As for the comment regarding steel being needed, he chooses to play Flamini over Gilberto (guile over steel me thinks), so not a valid comment, as they have steel if they want it. I am biased against Arsenal and hope to always be so! But tonight, rather than moan about a pen, they should be blaming Adebayor for his attrocious miss in the 2nd half. Torres' goal deserved to win a game just as much if not more so than walnut's run, so nothing to complain about there either. Wenger got the selection wrong tonight and they didn't manage outclass a team with more discipline and belief - it was never likely they would win going into the 2nd leg. I hope Liverpool win it again. Their recent form is superb and with Toress and Gerrard going forward they're gonna be very tricky to stop getting on the scoresheet.

Arsenal fans need to learn how to be better sports and give credit where due, rather than look for an excuse all the time. Arsenal have had a good season, over-achieving considering that they have an arguably weaker side then 2006-07 - leave it at that and quit whining!

Interesting comments bert. I'm a Chelsea fan, partner is an Arsenal fan, so you can imagine some of the rows fallouts screaming matches fisticuffs discussions we have over this.
What I would say though is yes, Arsenal have got some great young talent going forward. Yes, Arsenal play total football. Yes, Arsenal play lovely intricate one-touch. But how long before that amounts to anything other than plaudits?
Now I know Chelsea have 'bought' all their success, but other teams (Man United, Liverpool etc) have spent also, realising the need, the demand from fans and club to not be in prolonged stages of development/transition. However impressive it is that the team play the way they do and have been developed rather than bought, I think my patience at the lack of silverware would start to be wearing a little thin.
I guess what I'm asking all the Gunners out there, is whether your 'patience' is running out. I don't think you've taken any silverware, since the 2004/05 FA Cup

Come on the Arsenal, by pezlow on Apr 9, 2008 8:31:54 GMT 1, Personally I cannot understand the reluctance of the board to spend money. Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea have outspent Arsenal big time over the last 5 years. Hell even spurs, villa and Newcastle have. This season promised so much but yet again ends with nothing.
Wenger is a genius but he is operating with one hand tied behind his back. Mistakes were made this season, particularly in the january transfer window when it was obvious that with so many injuries we were going to struggle in the latter half of the season. Sacrificing the FA Cup was also a huge mistake. I'm not saying that we would have won that game at Old Trafford if our first team had been playing but at least we would have put up a better fight. That's when the rot started.
I also cannot for the life me understand why walcott doesn't play from the start. He's been our best player for last couple of months yet in the big games he's on the bench.

Come on the Arsenal, by onemandown72 on Apr 9, 2008 8:56:05 GMT 1, What I find hard to understand with all the Arsenal fans here, is that if you had told them at the beginning of the season that they would: 1. Still be owned privately by the same people who have taken the club into the Emirates, kept hold of Wenger and rebuffed new money 2. They would be very much in the title race come the last 5 games 3. Pushed a Liverpool side very close in the European Cup final 4. Shown that all the promise in youth they had was beginning to flourish
Most, if not all would have snapped your hand off. Look at the scousers, another wasted season in the League, publically approaching another manager when Benetiz was still well entrenched in the job, and playing out a joke,in ownership in the press with this unseemly courtship with DIC / Gillette & Hicks.
Sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture rather than focus on one result. Not a gooner- and did feel for you when you lost last night, but got to admit did expect it

Come on the Arsenal, by pezlow on Apr 9, 2008 9:11:12 GMT 1, Onemandown I don't disagree with you that the overall picture is quite rosy. But it would have been far rosier with an extra couple of players bought either in the close season or in January.
I don't think anyone really thinks we are very much in the title race though.

Come on the Arsenal, by crazyarsemother on Apr 9, 2008 9:28:52 GMT 1, Mike you are so right. Both those commentators were so biased to Liverpool. All Arsenal had to do was score two goals and Liverpool were in trouble. But they talked about Arsenal as they were a foriegn side. Torres this and Gerrard that. Both played quite poorly I thought. In fact Liverpool did not really threaten Arsenal that much for home side. Walcott's run did not even get a mention. Arsenal were better over the two legs. But they needed to score more goals. They let in three soft goals. They have been leaking soft goals all season. Never a penalty but bad defending. I am not so sure about the money thing. Utd have spent loads and loads and bought who of real consequence? Ronaldo has scored 37 goals! When did a player last do that with 6 games left? I think its more the players Wenger bought over the last 2 years have not come good - Hleb, Rosicknote, Eboue (spit spit), Diaby and Walcott to some degree. He has been good recently but early doors. Usually in Wengers reign one or two of these would turn out to be really good players. I think its more of an issue of Wenger never really ever signing enough decent defenders (apart from Sagna, Clichy and Toure - who was a midfielder). We have had Eboue, Vivas, Cygan, Luzhny, Stephanov etc etc. That seems to count more in these tight big games and the cold miserable away games that we have been drawing 1-1.

Come on the Arsenal, by crazyarsemother on Apr 9, 2008 9:34:25 GMT 1, Fair point one man down. But when you know something is in your grasp like last noght and its yourself that has let you down its very frustrating. I thought our season would have gone one of two ways this year. I guess if the team keeps hold of the best players and sells Eboue to Bashley Robins (my old under 12s team) I will be happy.

Most of the shite from the commentators I can cope with; the prawn sandwich jibes, the furiously masturbating over the Kop etc
But:
They were talking about Gillete and how he was snowed in at Chicago airport and the co-commentator (I'm sure it was Beglin) came out with "Well at least the snow was cleared off the runway for him" then it went silent and a few sniggers came out.
That is cuntishness in the extreme and that is what infuriated me

That's all well and good onemandown, but add the following points and I think you have a different slant on it:
1) To throw away a 5-point lead going into January (or was it February?) 2) To have won only 1 of last 7 Prem Games 3) To have picked up only 8 from a possible 21 (against teams such as Birmingham, Wigan, Boro - no disrespect).
Yes, start of the season everyone had them pegged as struggling for fourth. Pundits, bookies, the lot.
But they played with a point to prove and were proving it, Arsenal were well in with the title race, and the Champions League, amazing displays against Milan...people spoke of Man United as outsiders at one point, with questions only being asked now of the depth of their squad....and so it faltered. Never the same after that Birmingham draw.
I'd be disappointed. Like Pez said, that there just wasn't enough cover. And there was money to be spent. That's the gutter. It just wasnt' spent.

Come on the Arsenal, by mcster on Apr 9, 2008 10:05:47 GMT 1, I'm gutted. Wenger needs to swallow his pride and spend. Having said that I feel going out of the Champions League was about two penality decisions rather than anything else. I can't believe anybody would say we were out played in either of the matches, but that's little solace today. Not long until I have to renew my season ticket now and I assume it's going rise in cost. If it does I'll expect to see some of my money spent on players. Walcott was good though, proved himself on the big stage.

Come on the Arsenal, by onemandown72 on Apr 9, 2008 10:10:34 GMT 1, Streetgirl - you kind of make my point for me:
1. Did you ever expect Arsenal to be 5 points clear going into Jan? 2. Did you think that there would be no ill effects from having a small, young squad that would struggle to keep up any pace - also throw in the Africa Nations.
They have played with a point to prove, and have done so, but this will only take you so far in a long highly competitive season.
And having money to spend doesn't mean you should just throw it at players. If you can't buy the right players for the right price then there is no point in spending. I didn't hear Arsenal fans complaining about not spending money in January when they were 5 points clear, just how good the young players were and how well Wenger was doing.

Come on the Arsenal, by arcam on Apr 9, 2008 11:20:25 GMT 1, Personally I cannot understand the reluctance of the board to spend money. If you ask me Arsene didn't spend because he didn't really need to. When I look at your squad I don't see a major weekness, you just got some injuries to keys players at unfortunate times. Adebayor for me can be a bit hit and miss but you've Van Persie, next season when he's fit and has a few games under his belt it'll be like having a new signing. He's a class act in my book. The only place I would add is in maybe centre midfield, you've always seemed a bit light there to me. Flamini is technically good but I'd have a player like Mascherano over him.
