Come on the Arsenal, by pezlow on Apr 9, 2008 11:28:02 GMT 1, I don't doubt that our first team squad is good but the problem is that you need strength in depth to win the league nowadays. Chelsea and Utd pretty much have cover for nearly every position. We are still way behind them in that.
I agree that we have been unlucky with injuries this season - Van P, Eduardo and Rosicky have all been out for extended periods of time. But you need to have a squad which covers this.
I fear that Van persie is far too darren anderton for my liking as well.

Come on the Arsenal, by linderman on Apr 9, 2008 11:32:43 GMT 1, Arsenal seem to doze off sometime's at the back, senderof had a bad game and they were unlucky with the penalty, what arsene really need's to do is get rid of eboue and bentner

Come on the Arsenal, by Young Squire on Apr 9, 2008 11:37:33 GMT 1, Bring it on Chelsea.
Never any doubt about that result. Arsenal just don't have the stamina or the commitment to slog out 3 hrs of football for the result. Hardly surprising with all the French "flair" they have!
Liverpool are grafters and they need this silverware.
Predication: Liverpool v United final. United unfortunately to win it this year (and probably with relative ease!)

Good points onemandown, put it this way: with the injuries Chelsea had coupled with the loss of key players during the African cup of nations (remember Adebayor didn't leave and was at that time, prolific) at a crucial time in the season, I certainly didn't believe we'd leapfrog Arsenal and be within range to upset Man United (not that I think we will but we're close) the way we have.
I don't think any Gunner thought they'd honestly slip into 3rd. Infact I know so, cos my partner bet £50 we wouldn't leapfrog them.

You may not have big name players ala Chelsea but you've some very promising players coming through the ranks. Up front you're pretty much covered, Eduardo looks a tidy player, as does Bendtner. Walcott can also play there if need be. Midfield, you've the like of Denilson, Song, Gilberto and of course Walcott. The only area you are lacking a bit maybe is defense.
Give it a year or two and you're going to have a quality squad.

Come on the Arsenal, by pezlow on Apr 9, 2008 11:51:30 GMT 1, And having money to spend doesn't mean you should just throw it at players. If you can't buy the right players for the right price then there is no point in spending. I didn't hear Arsenal fans complaining about not spending money in January when they were 5 points clear, just how good the young players were and how well Wenger was doing.
Maybe not but lots of arsenal fans I know were upset about the lack of actvity in the transfer market in january and in the close season. I certainly was. Remember that our squad was weakened in January because we sold Diarra to Portsmouth. That seemed a bizarre decision at the time.
Also remember last summer - Henry out, Reyes out, Aliadiere out, Baptista out. Not to mention Merida being sent on loan for a whole season. Brought in - Sagna and Eduardo. I can remember being pretty frustrated at this at the time.

Up front does look good.
Midfield - Song isn't good enough. Gilberto is not the player he was. Denilson (who has also been injured for much of this season) looks excellent as does Walcott. Merida looks like a real talent too.
We still need more strength in depth though and definitely need a bit more experience for when the going gets tough.

There has definitely been a marked improvement though, some players this year have really grown. And Arsenal are nearly there, it's not as if they're miles off the pace.
Look at Liverpool, Rafa has thrown million at the team, and they're still no closer to winning the league.
As for Chelsea.....yes ok they have many big names in their squad but I know which team I'd rather pay my money to watch. Gunners fans don't realise how lucky they are.

There is a balance that has to be drawn though. One thing I've always felt is Arsenals strength is the fact Arsene plays a settled side. When you start bring in experienced players they don't expect to sit on the bench waiting for someone to get injured.

Come on the Arsenal, by streetgirl on Apr 9, 2008 12:55:00 GMT 1, Arcam - don't get me wrong. I hear what you're saying loud and clear. They have played amazing football this year. As have Man United. Don't doubt for one minute I don't wish Chelsea played like that...my point is though for those that go and watch week in and week out (and infact for those that don't but continue to support) when do results and trophies start to mean more than flair and panache?

Come on the Arsenal, by arcam on Apr 9, 2008 13:10:09 GMT 1, It's not to say one can't follow the other but if I had to make a choice I'd rather watch entertaining football than winning trophies. Going to the Match is an expensive business these days, but we go to be entertained. Winning is nice but there is nothing more boring than watching negative football week in week out.

Come on the Arsenal, by anthoz on Apr 9, 2008 13:11:26 GMT 1, Mike you are so right. Both those commentators were so biased to Liverpool. All Arsenal had to do was score two goals and Liverpool were in trouble. But they talked about Arsenal as they were a foriegn side. Torres this and Gerrard that. Both played quite poorly I thought. In fact Liverpool did not really threaten Arsenal that much for home side. Walcott's run did not even get a mention. Arsenal were better over the two legs. But they needed to score more goals. They let in three soft goals. They have been leaking soft goals all season. Never a penalty but bad defending. I am not so sure about the money thing. Utd have spent loads and loads and bought who of real consequence? Ronaldo has scored 37 goals! When did a player last do that with 6 games left? I think its more the players Wenger bought over the last 2 years have not come good - Hleb, Rosicknote, Eboue (spit spit), Diaby and Walcott to some degree. He has been good recently but early doors. Usually in Wengers reign one or two of these would turn out to be really good players. I think its more of an issue of Wenger never really ever signing enough decent defenders (apart from Sagna, Clichy and Toure - who was a midfielder). We have had Eboue, Vivas, Cygan, Luzhny, Stephanov etc etc. That seems to count more in these tight big games and the cold miserable away games that we have been drawing 1-1. Most of the s**te from the commentators I can cope with; the prawn sandwich jibes, the furiously masturbating over the Kop etc But: They were talking about Gillete and how he was snowed in at Chicago airport and the co-commentator (I'm sure it was Beglin) came out with "Well at least the snow was cleared off the runway for him" then it went silent and a few sni**ers came out. That is c**tishness in the extreme and that is what infuriated me
mike i missed that....please tell me that isnt true? can some clever inernet bod on here find a link to the commentary? is that possible. That sort of comment would get someone slapped in my house....and rightly so.....

Come on the Arsenal, by stuey09 on Apr 9, 2008 13:32:21 GMT 1, One thing has amazed me about last nights game and the subsequent comments, there seems to be little or no recognition of how well Liverpool played or indeed how strong they are in this competition. Arsenal, or any other team will face an uphill struggle to win at Anfield, particularly in a European game when the prospect is elimination from the competition is at stake. The evidence is there to inspect. Instead of complaining about deficiencies in your team, you might want to consider how difficult a task you actually faced and also what a good job Wenger has done in keeping Arsenal competitive with the millionaires of Chelsea and Man Utd.
Humility in victory and dignity in defeat is not a bad outlook y'know.

Come on the Arsenal, by melmoth on Apr 9, 2008 13:38:22 GMT 1, This may have already have been commented on, but I thought that part of Wenger's reticence in splashing out too much in the transfer market was the move to the Emirates? I would think that this would start to loosen up somewhat now that the move is a done deal.
Personally, I don't care much for Arsenal from a supporter's standpoint - I'm a, ahem, Swansea supporter (my home team) - but they do play great football, and I've enjoyed watching them on Fox Sports when they've been on this year. It does seem though that they've not quite got the mix of youth and experience quite right. While the Giggs-Beckham-Scholes, etc. era Man Utd team managed it, I recall that they still had an experienced backbone of players, particularly in defence. Arsenal's experienced players are hot-heads (Gallas for example), or past it (Denilson). The net effect is putting too much pressure then on players like Fabregas.

I'm sorry but I watched (and listened) to the game last night and I remember the incident you're talking of and I certainly didn't hear any sniggers.
The way I interpreted it was he was referring to the fact that no one could fly out of Chicago Airport because of the snow BUT because Gillet is so rich he paid for them to plough it especially for him.
It had F ALL to do with Munich or friggin United for fuck sake!!
Can you honestly imagine if he'd made a joke like that - there would have been public uproar and it would have been all over the gutter press today.
Seriously man - I know Man U fans have a pretty blinkered view at times - but to say that comment was directed at you, your club and fans is just plain daft.

What's amazed me about last night's game, and the subsequent comments, is what a bunch of whining bitches premier league fans are.
You Arsenal fans are watching the most sublime football to ever grace English football. Stop fucking complaining. You would seriously rather watch Chelsea every week just so you can end the season with a tin pot? Jesus.

Jesus.

Come on the Arsenal, by pezlow on Apr 9, 2008 14:23:05 GMT 1, I'm an arsenal season ticket holder. And yes I would much rather win trophies than play attractive football. Of course it is a bonus if you can do both but the most important thing is to win trophies. I'm pretty sure that if you asked any Arsenal season ticket holder they would say the same thing. Indeed I'm pretty sure that any football fan would say the same thing.
One of the best feelings I have ever experienced as a fan was our Cup Winners Cup win in 1994 when Smith scored early and we then shut up shop. 1-0 to the arsenal was born that day. It is what we do. I didn't give a shit then about how we won it - the fact is we won it.

There are only 4 trophies to go round... and one of them (the league cup) you don't even try to win.
Just be thankful you're in with a shout of winning these things. English football has been stitched up by the 'big 4' to the extent that only those 4 clubs are ever in with a hope of winning anything. And yet all I ever hear is whining and moaning about how they're STILL not spending enough / getting enough money. Why not just enjoy the fact that you happened to be enjoying a bit of success when the premier league was formed and as a result are guaranteed to be in the champions league every year. It could just as easily have been Spurs (or Villa, Everton, Leeds, Newcastle.....).

Come on the Arsenal, by pezlow on Apr 9, 2008 15:02:25 GMT 1, Yeah you are of course right. And at the start of the season everyone was saying that arsenal would be lucky to finish 4th and that spurs would take over.
