Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by andrewd on May 15, 2008 20:20:07 GMT 1, This is all a bit pre historic reminiscent of the Home Internationals that were stopped because of the way some Scottish fans behaved when they came to Wembley and sat on the crossbar.
There are byelaws in Manchester prohibit the drinking of alcohol in public places. Apparently the police decided that they weren't worth trying to enforce yesterday.
Hope that all of the dickheads caught on CCTV are dealt with as this type of thing does football absolutley no good at all

I agree - the good thing about CCTV, I sometimes don't understand the negativity it gets when it helps to stop murder, rape etc

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by Lord Lucas Roham on May 15, 2008 20:31:20 GMT 1, Rangers shamed Scotland last night, all the good work the Tartan Army has done for Scotlands reputation over the years has been undone.
What has made it worse was the lack of Saltires, you could count them on one hand.
And no, I am not a Celtic supporter.

Hi Felix,
I don't think CCTV helps stop murders, rape, football hooliganism or anything else. Manchester is covered in CCTV but obviously didn't stop the trouble last night. This is one reason I believe the millions and millions of pounds spent of CCTV could be spent much better elsewhere. However, in a very small amount of cases where the CCTV is good enough and the police have enough interest and resource then the offenders may be identified and tried with the help of the CCTV.

There's a South London. I thought it was just one main street with a few shops on?

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by shaunyboy on May 15, 2008 21:53:35 GMT 1, its not the best, but there was a sequence of events leading up2 this police went in heavy handed with riot gear earlier in the night combined with a lot of drink, not being able to see the game, poor organisation, and the misjudgement of the numbers of rangers fans arriving, it was a recipy for disaster
That's very interesting Graeme about the sequence of events that are not on the CCTV or not on the clip on the BBC. It reminds me of the famous miners charging the police clip the BBC used in the 84-85 strike which was in fact the exact opposite, the police had waded in to the miners, indiscriminately attacking anyone, before the footage was used and so when the miners defended themselves the impression on TV was given that the miners were the aggressors. We should always be wary of CCTV pictures released by the police or the media and should demand the whole context of such pictures. Were the Rangers fans the victims of a police charge? We need to see so we can put the situation into more of a context. Being a veteran of peace marches and demonstrations it is a sad case that I have seen the thugs in uniform in action on a number of occasions and the sight of women and children being batoned in the head is not one I will forget. Ever. Violence should be condemned whoever did it.

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by low3 on May 15, 2008 23:43:45 GMT 1, Damn right arcam They're now not showing next Wednesday's match in Manchester
No big deal, most manure fans could'nt find their way to manchester if their lives depended on it, with a map AND a sat-nav. ;D ;D
At least it means all the normal people in manchester can go out next wednesday without fear of being labelled a glory-hunring utd fan.......... Thank you Rangers fans!!!!

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by low3 on May 15, 2008 23:51:24 GMT 1, On a more serious note though, i think you can apportion a large slice of the blame at the feet of manchester council. There was no way on god's earth that there would be no rangers fans coming all this way and there being no trouble. Clearly the best thing would've been to either show the game at one of the edges of town, away from the centre, or to have more than three big screens set up so the fans would have been split into smaller groups. They reckon there were around fifty thousand fans in piccadilly gardens (looking at the mess the left, i'd say that might be on the conservative side). How could that possibly go smoothly when most had been drinking all day?? Don't get me wrong though, the Gers fans were still well out of order, but it was a tiny minority.

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by graeme501 on May 16, 2008 0:03:31 GMT 1, the main problem was manchester council and police saying they were going to take a relaxed policing effort
this basically gave a green light for every hooligan, rangers fans and others, to come down for a fight, personally, i would have prefered, a tight police force with fan zones outside the city center, on the outskirts, with licenced bars
this does not excuse the behavior of a MINORITY of fans, please remember there was 175,000 fans there with the main purpose to enjoy the match
re the saltire, we are a scottish club, but also a british club, our colours are blue, red and white, as is the union jack, i see no problem flying the uj, i am also a massive scotland fan, come to ibrox, there are plenty of scottish flags at the match

You get the odd one.
You can tell when they're playing at home cos if you go out in manchester, all you can here is irish, cockney, chinese and lots of other non-mancunian accents.
and you can't get a hotel room in the city for love nor money!!

Don't see why not. United played in Manchester and got their name in Manchester. Makes sense for a few of the fans to still be in Manchester
Indeed, in 2003 it was nice to see City start playing less than 200 yards from United's old ground.
Its a funny old game

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by graeme501 on May 16, 2008 0:31:40 GMT 1, anyway the point of this thread was to let people know that not all rangers fans are like the 'fans' that appeared on the news tonight, that was the very small minority
yes maybe rangers fans like a drink and a party, but the violence shown towards the police has been condemmed by every true rangers fan
im sure many of u support england, so u will have dealt with this negativity with hooliganism before, so please dont judge my club by the stupid actions of some people, judge it by our borning, ultra defensive, negative football

Glasgow Rangers In Manchester, by low3 on May 16, 2008 0:37:57 GMT 1, fair play to Walter Smith though, it very nearly worked.. If darcheville had bagged his first chance, it could've been a very different outcome.
Just thought I'd share this bit out of the Manchester Evening News when describing the carnage left in Piccadilly Gardens this morning:
"mounds of rubbish as far as the eye can see................ the strong stench of urine, stale beer and vomit"
sounds like your boys left the place as they found it ;D
