Agreed. He isn't shit, but he misses a hell of a lot of chances. Only my pinion, but I believe he's past it.

He's bagging them in for England. The difference at Newcastle is he's playing under Big Sams shite long ball tactics. Today against Sunderland our most two creative players were played as defensive midfilelders and our best winger was left back. Owen got zero service, the guy can't make miracles happen.
I rate Torres, his game is perfect for the premiership, he's strong, quick, good on ball and is a natural finisher. But he's a totally different type of player than Owen. Owen relies on service, but if you give him it as we've seen with England and he'll score.

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by stuey09 on Nov 10, 2007 21:03:31 GMT 1, I respect your opinion arcam, but can't totally agree with you mate. The amount of reasonable chances that he misses can be gut wrenching at times. Also, the truly great players are able to adapt to different playing systems. For my money, Owen was a great player when his pace gave him the confidence to go at defenders and have a shot. Without his pace, he has to rely on a very selfish system that has the rest of the team feeding him or making diversionary runs in order to allow him space. He'll be on loan at Darlington next season

Newcastle at present has zero creativity, I think any striker would struggle in that side.
Sack Big Sam I say and bring back Keegan. ;D

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by a4mnt on Nov 11, 2007 2:22:14 GMT 1, rooney, drogba - yes.
van persie - maybe.
tevez, anelka - no.
rooney's had his barren spells, but he's quality no doubt. drogba took at least 2 seasons of falling over like a comedians side kick before he had his big season last year. he aint been all that this season has he?
van persie is filling some big shoes, but i'd rather have torres.
tevez shone as any 'big' fish in a little pond would do. now he's made that step up.....whats happening? not much yet. he's a season ahead of our boy torres as well. i think he's well suited to the premiership bustle.
anelka - needs too much man management. sulky french t**t.
i'm sure mike would have included berbatov in his list. but i rate keane higher than him. keane scores some great poachers goals.
martins - any day instead of owen. i loved the boy at liverpool and us reds have a soft spot for him but all the injuries and extra training on his calves have slowed him down to the point of innefectualness. he needs a crouch to knock the ball down for him. playing him and viduka is just silly. too similar.
so out of all those......i'd still happily take torres. its his first season and he is adjusting nicely.
I know a lot of teams are blooding young players for the future, but torres, babel, lucas leiva....the future is looking bright.

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by lesbianwednesdays on Nov 11, 2007 12:05:52 GMT 1, in the interests of fairness i think i'd better be honest here. not only when liverpool signed torres but also the amount they paid, i thought the world had gone mad. for me he was always a one in three man and although he looked good at times he has the killer instinct of rupert the bear (pun intended).
however, i've been impressed with him more than any other player this season, without exception. now that may relate to my low expectations of him and also the price tag but he actually looks value for money. liverpool had tried and tried yesterday, only ever going to get a point and that could seriously have been them out of the title race in the second week of november. he came on, changed the came and potentially changed liverpool's season.
forget the hyperbole cracka was chatting the other night, he enjoyed the 8-0 but i'm sure will be the first to admit that last night's game will have more of a bearing on where they end up than any walk in the park against a bunch of stiffs.
for my money, torres is second only to drogba right now. big players change games and win things for you. drogba is chelsea, he is easily the best striker in the world and without him they are nothing. rooney and tevez? do me a favour, technically sound and determined but that team revolves around ronaldo, lose him and again you face a completely different proposition. van persie can change a game but he hasn't done it enough. when we've needed inspiration and something extra from someone it has come from fabregas, although robin has been out for a while so it is hard to compare.
as for anelka, owen et al, they've had their chance(s) they are where they are because of what they are: not as good as they once were. they still have something to offer but having both been at Real and not made the most of it, it is no surprise to see them where they currently are.
back to liverpool, what will win you the league, or ultimately cost you it, will be the performance of the spine of your team. torres up top, every week, gerrard in the middle and working hard, even away from home, carragher keep fouling and getting away with it and reina staying forcused. any deviation from this will be what costs you. with our lot we rely more on runners from midfield, fabregas working the ball wide then getting to finish the move, the goals will need to come from him, robin, adebayor, rosicky, hleb and walcott. we have had crucial goals also from our centre backs as have united this season. with kolo going to the african cup of nations we will be short at centre back an hopefully gilberto can do a job there. united will survive on a stong defence and the pace and creativity of ronaldo and giggs, anyone getting in the box will be hard pushed to miss from their work.
nearly there. in my opinion liverpool can win the title but it must be built on consistency, rotate the players around those i mentioned but not them. arsenal can go all the way but will need a lot of luck with injuries, suspensions and international duties. united will either win it or come second, it will come from them and one other to the end, one game could even decide it in april or may. as for chelsea, well in drogba they have probably the best player in the world, still got terry to come back and are playing some good stuff. a lot has gone on with them and if they're still in the running at easter it could be very interesting.
i said before the season that arsenal will not finish lower than second and i stand by it, whoever does win it will have to earn the right to be champions, more so than in any other season since 2002 and probably closer even than 1999. for me, that was the premier league at it's best and only now are we seeing the kind of football and rivalry that we had in a season where united were very, very lucky.

I'll be honest when I heard they signed him I told my mates who supported Liverpool that he'd be the Premierships top goal scorer. My above post was said with tongue firmly in cheek. With the exception of Rooney the players I've mentioned above have adapted to the Premiership, but it never came natural to them. Torres on the other hand is built for this league and if anything what surprised me the most when Liverpool bought him was not the price paid, but why no one else went for him. Rafa needs to quit with this rotation system and let him play, as with games under his belt he will only get better.

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by a4mnt on Nov 11, 2007 14:43:45 GMT 1, Rupert - There's a job waiting for you at setanta!
Its good for our football in general that the top four are all becoming more competitive.
In all honesty, I don't see Liverpool winning the league this year, too many draws already and we need to be scoring from all other positions like Arsenal and Man Utd. There is so much potential it is frustrating and that frustration is showing more and more in Stevie as he tries (too hard) to win games single handedly.
Liverpool need another Torres, and I think we have already targeted that player and planned our buying strategies for the next 2 transfer windows. No more waiting around for the cheque book to open like the last 2 summers, watch the difference in 2008, mark my words. Torres is adjusting to the premiership faster than i expected and if Babel with his lightening quick feet can catch up, things will look good.
I'm certainly not writing off Chelsea yet though, they've pulled it all together so far, which is more than I thought they would do. I can imagine Arsenals youngsters dropping the baton sooner or later, but they can afford to have a blip with the cushion they have created. So far, even though they had an awful start to the season, I can see man utd winning again and going all the way in the CL, as much as it pains me to do so. But at least I can appreciate it all for good sport and not get too bogged down in emotions if Liverpool don't do as well as expected.
If we do though, don't expect me not to be smug about it. 8-0 ;D
Over to you Mike for the manc point of view

agreed Torres needs to play, but after the confidence in the team was sky high after their 8-0 win, the least rafa could do was to see if naming an unchanged team would carry on with the winning ways.
torres provided the answer.
i'd hate to think how many we would have scored midweek if torres had played as well!!

sadly i think united will do us too, not sure if they have enough to go all the way in europe mind but they have by far and away the best equipped squad. i have to say though cracka i think you need another carragher a hell of a lot more than you need another torres
as for chelsea, i think the african cup of nations will do for them, both drogba and essien will be more of a loss than terry and lampard could ever aspire to be.
a long, long way to go but i wouldn't bet against united, if arsenal can stay lucky then the rest can go fuck, on our day there is none better, trouble is not everyday is your best.
i'm so excited by the possibilities i cannot articulate them, suffice to say every time i go up i can't wait for kick off rather than being nervous about what could happen, i cannot wait to see how the game goes.
good luck to all and their team's, the not knowing can sometimes be the best it gets, as far as my lot are concerned i hope the best is yet to come
come on you rip-roaring, goal-scoring gunners!!!!

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by a4mnt on Nov 15, 2007 9:33:55 GMT 1, Torres is no diver :
"The game in Spain is very stop and go. Someone is fouled, the player goes down and the game stops for the free-kick. In this country a player will battle hard to stay on his feet and the referees will allow little things to go so that the game can be more continuous. "I like that. It is very different to the football life I used to know in Spain but I like it a lot. It suits the way I like to play the game."

It is very different to the football life I used to know in Spain but I like it a lot. It suits the way I like to play the game."

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by lastpost on Nov 15, 2007 20:58:47 GMT 1, Some nice debates going on here!! I am suprised how well Torres has adapted to the Prem - his goal scoring record in Spain wasn't exactly amazing. How ever much people knock Owen, his record is probably second to none (goal every two games at all levels). Good job he does need a few chances! I hate to say it, but United look pretty formidable this year...if they still had horse face they'd be even better. I hope Rafa quits with this rotation nonsence.

It'll be interesting to see how Torres does next season, once he's fully adapted. That is when he should be judged. Still think we're at least two quality players away from a balanced team.

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by lastpost on Nov 15, 2007 21:22:39 GMT 1, He has brought in loads of highly rated youngsters...will he have the balls like Wenger to put faith in them?!? I'd say we need an experienced centre back for next season...oh and Messi.

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by a4mnt on Nov 17, 2007 0:10:48 GMT 1, we need another centre back now.
the youngsters are looking good but just need the confidence of playing first team football, which aint easy at liverpool.
Nabil El Zhar looks great, what we've seen of him. As done Lucas Leiva, he's going to be the new gerrard.
But the rest seem to be getting few chances.....well, El Zhar is getting none, its such a shame.

I don,t think he has really performed since he left Leeds! I can remember when the Arsenal and various others wanted his sig he signed for Liverpool and i was chuffed. However one injury after another, has left me fealing slightly cheated... He is looking promising but being that injury prone i think if Liverpool get offers in the transfer window, they will take it

Messi yes please or i watched Ribery play for Bayern last week against Bolton and he was incredible. Pace to spare and looked like a young Zidane in the way he played and read the game.
Not like when old Houllier said that Cheyrou would be the next Zidane

Torresssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, by lastpost on Nov 17, 2007 12:39:30 GMT 1, I feel for Houllier...he was a good bloke, but made some awful signings! I was really suprised when no Prem team went in for Ribery. I think Zidane was a one off to be honest...that left footed swivel volley he scored one of the best goals ever IMO!!

Stunning goal have to agree! As for Houllier i do not think he was rutheless enough say like Furgeson. However did the club a great service and he has not dissapointed any of the Lyon fans. i wonder if we would have won in Istanbul if Houllier had given the half time talk?
