Banksy Street Art • Tesco Generation, by robertlondon on Mar 6, 2008 17:53:10 GMT 1, I guess no one can predict the future but there's a possibility that Banksy murals could become major tourist attractions in their own right in years to come.
I'm just appalled by the GREED of the shop owner and any prospective buyers. No thought for the future.
I get far more joy out of seeing new street pieces than winning in a POW bunfight or watching the value of a print increase.
I'm saddened.

The last time I was in Bristol I stood on the bridge next too the Lovers for about ten minutes, there must have been 50+ people stopped to take photos, I chatted to a couple of them "do you know who did it " sort of thing, everyone knew, they were all there for that piece and to get their own snap of it proper tourist style.

Banksy Street Art • Tesco Generation, by trowel on Mar 6, 2008 18:16:51 GMT 1, I find it a little odd that people are criticising the shop keeper - I doubt there are few here who wouldn't cash in, and I imagine the owner couldn't give two hoots about our worries about another Banksy disappearing from the walls if it means going to bed without any worries about feeding his family.
At the end of the day all street art is efemoral - it wasn't there last weekend, it might not be there in a few weekends time; better it disappears because someone's life is improving at the expense of someone who wants to preserve it, rather than disappears due to some jealous petty attack in the middle of the night. Lucky us for having someone like Banksy brightening our life albeit temporarily; lucky shopkeeper for the timing.
Plenty more street art of far higher quality which ITN and the Sun will never come to film, so lets move on.

Banksy Street Art • Tesco Generation, by Grafter on Mar 6, 2008 18:24:56 GMT 1, I've witnessed hundreds of people over the past few days walk past this and take a snap on their phone. They always walk off with a smile on their face. Let me tell you these people are NOT art buffs. They are ordinary people. Mums pushing prams, old men, workers getting a sandwich from the bakers, kids on their way to school, I even saw a Traffic Warden take a picture. How great it is to have something in your drab day to day existence that makes you want to stop for a moment and forget about paying the bills. The thought that someone feels it's their right to rob normal people of this moment so they can make a fast buck make me want to puke. Whoever you are.... SHAME ON YOU.

Banksy Street Art • Tesco Generation, by Heavyconsumer on Mar 6, 2008 18:28:15 GMT 1, I think this sentiment of abhoration that the shopkeeper is selling the wall, felt throughout almost this whole forum, is totally unrealistic and extremelt naive.
It's his wall, that makes it his Banksy. Same as Neate leaving pieces of cardboard in the street. In my opinion this epitimises the way in which Banksy and Neate have perpetually questioned the meaning and value of "ART". This guy running a local pharmacy is on 5 figures a year, maybe raising a few kids - who knows? Whatever! A 6-figure some in the back pocket tax-free is something he should turn down, just because we want to walk past and see the piece? I wouldn't! I'd sell every time and maybe that will make me unpopular here. Maybe if I were a wealthy guy that would not be my persponal view. But to incriminate or begrudge this man is, in my humble opinion, small minded, ignorant and petty.
That's not a personal dig at any individual here! Just stop to think if you'd give away a winning lottery ticket (5 numbers + the bonus). If you would then throw the money this way please! PM me for banking info!

but i think when it comes to crunch time. i.e. banksy comes and paints on your wall. and some dude offers 200k to buy it from u.
u'll be hard pressed to say "sorry. you can keep the money. im leaving it there to make ordinary people smile."
if someone really offered you straight up cash today, someone offered u no strings attached NOTHING, 200k pounds, will you
say no. give it to charity please.
or will you...
say yes?

If he disowns these works, people will not pay ridiculous sums for them and they will remain free for all to see.

One option - only paint on the walls of really expensive mansions or public buildings? Might not solve the problem but be interesting to see if a wealthy home owner would sell or paint over it. Public buildings makes it more difficult for an individual to sell but puts him at increased risk of prosecution.

just annoys me that Banksy is still spraying up on personal property so its just shifted into some wealthy f**kers hands. Slap them up on big industrial pass-overs and blocks of flats that aint going anywhere!!! maybve hes doing it purposely but i dont like it on first thoughts

maybe he needs to get a bigger ladder.
