Banksy • Mild Mild West, Street Art in Bristol, by Art-el on Apr 7, 2009 17:32:38 GMT 1, Appropriate media website registered to Clean Collective... Art-el artists Sarah Cockings and Alice Hodge? Surely not?
"Over the last 24 hours a huge storm has blown up in Bristol (& beyond) over the (attempted) defacing of Banksy's infamous 'Mild Mild West' piece on Stokes Croft by a group calling themselves Appropriate Media. Internet chat on local graffiti forums suggests that The Clean Collective (whose work we sell) are somehow linked to this action; an allegation that we are looking into.
It seems unlikely, however, that there is any connection between the two groups, not least because the two individuals alleged to be involved are currently not even in the UK.
Furthermore it would be extremely odd if The Clean Collective shared the same vehemently anti-graffiti ethos as Appropriate Media, in light of their links with us and - by implication - our roster of street artists.
We will keep you posted with any further developments as they occur."
Peace

Banksy • Mild Mild West, Street Art in Bristol, by jellya on Apr 7, 2009 19:27:48 GMT 1, I don't normally approve of such things, but in this case it should be protected (I have therefore voted as such ;D)
Ditto that Fragile.
On a related point, I'm not sure it's the last survivng freehand piece in the city, but not wanting to direct the paint splashers to the other piece I'm thinking about I'll leave it at that.
That said MMW is arguably the finest freehand left anywhere and I know I would be sad to see it go in such a senseless, non-artistic way as was seen this week.
I wonder why Banksy hasn't used it as a regular spot like the old Street wall? Now, if *he* did something with it, well that would be just fine

Banksy • Mild Mild West, Street Art in Bristol, by LEVI C on Apr 7, 2009 19:56:55 GMT 1, totally think it should be protected by perspex. For me this piece captures an era. In the 90's the free party scene was rife here in Bristol and we were forever being moved on, having systems taken away, getting arrested etc. It was like a fight for freedom to party and the police were getting more and more heavy handed, but ultimatley everyone was just 'fluffy' and just wanted to get twatted, have a laugh and 'feel' good techno. Seems cheesey writing it now, but thats what it means to me and probably a few more in Bristol.
The image could have paint on top, or be faded from being cleaned, it would still mean to me.
thanks

Banksy • Mild Mild West, Street Art in Bristol, by Steal From Work on Apr 8, 2009 13:52:26 GMT 1, Yeah, the Cube's a small art house cinema really close to the piece, just down the other end of Jamaica Street. Sure it's nothing to do with them as such, they're just providing the hosting.
To second this the Cube server is very much an open thing, intended as a resource for all with a need to use, so it's just individuals using the server there. I'm sure the Cube won't simply kick them off as that would smack of censorship, but I have spoken to them and they will be issuing a statement online explaining how their server works and that the web page (or indeed action itself) did not in anyway come from The Cube.
In fact The Cube has been very supportive of the local scene over the years, and are very happy to have artwork from the Crimes of Passion show going up on it's walls this month and four days of films and events to tie in with Crimes of Passion this weekend.
Jono

Banksy • Mild Mild West, Street Art in Bristol, by mbv on Apr 9, 2009 9:48:46 GMT 1, Whilst I am certain the Cube is not directly involved, they are still supporting these people by continuing to host their site. I think they have a responsibility to at least remove the site from their server. It would also be good if they could encourage an apology from the people responsible - I presume they know who they are?
Also would like to thank PRSC for all their efforts in saving MMW.

SARAH COCKINGS AND ALICE HODGE (aka CLEAN) WOULD LIKE TO CLEAN A FEW THINGS UP!
Sorry your homework has lead you up the garden path ….. We are not associated with the group THE CLEAN COLLECTIVE who caused the damage to Banksy’s work.
The confusion has arisen from the ‘Appropriate Media’ website being registered to The Clean Collective….
We (Alice Hodge and Sarah Cockings) are a collective called simply ….. ‘CLEAN’
Thank you for taking such an interest in our work however we are not in anyway connected to the self proclaimed culprits ‘Appropriate Media’ (http://www.appropriatemedia.net)

Not a completely convincing explanation imo..
Art-El - the gallery that represent these artists refers to them as "The Clean Collective (whose work we sell)".
Now apparently they are not called "The Clean Collective" but they are instead a collective called "Clean". Shouldn't their own gallery be able to get their name right?
EDIT: Not saying I think it was them - just not a very convincing explanation.
