Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by CR on Nov 15, 2007 22:06:22 GMT 1, I still beleive Micallef has alot to offer, and I hope that his next show in the UK gives us what we all want, a GREAT show with some AMAZING art.
I for one hope he does a show with no prints, so we can get rid of all the donkey crap surrounding the LA one.

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by danvnuk on Nov 15, 2007 22:13:01 GMT 1, The interesting thing about Micallef this year has been - despite the over-hyped LA show and debacle of the London Prints.....GIWTBB released through POW is one of the best prints of the year and arguably one of Micallef's best images.
So - not all doom and gloom then ;D

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by a4mnt on Nov 15, 2007 22:14:28 GMT 1, Jesus, I've just thought that Laz is going to be showing David Choe next year.
I seriously hope he doesn't convince him to go for a print run anything larger than 200. In fact I hope Laz doesn't get his mitts on any Choe prints and leaves it to Andrew.

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by RBK on Nov 15, 2007 22:17:05 GMT 1, Sorry I'm not even drunk and I'm offering passionate opinions. My main point is - Laz is a great businessman - but that doesn't mean he is great at making artists' long-lasting careers. I thought the price increases for LA tested the true upper limits - and while the show sold-out - I think it has done irreparable damage to Antony's career (regardless of how much money was made) way too soon to opinionate that rbk. for a start as you say the show sold out, also, until the next collection of work is released and subsequently sold (or not) for whatever price then you have no comparables, only the past. in the past he sold work for less but had to to gain exposure and raise his profile. once established he can command higher prices because of that, only when he dies or his career ends and his work is sold only by auction can you have any say over where the peaks and troughs were in antony's career and start the analysis of where it all went wrong. you can't measure the strength of a storm when you're stuck in the middle of it.
A show selling out does not necessarily make it a "success." How many major top American collections/curators/instituions actually bought pieces? I'd be willing to bet 80%+ went to buyers in the UK that flew over. I was under the impression this show was to promote AM's work to the American public. I don't think they did a great job of this. And can you show me one piece of actual art criticism on this show?
All my comments aside, I really like some of Antony's work. I think GIWTBB is one (if not the best) print release of the year. And I'm happy to say the first Micallef I've ever purchased.
Don't think it is too early to lend a critical opinion at all! It's easy to look at things in hindsight. And opinionate isn't a verb

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by sausageboonwee on Nov 15, 2007 22:30:18 GMT 1, GIWTBB is definitely one of the prints of the year regardless of quantity. Nice frame Stuey - best I've seen yet. The Uzi's were really poor IMO possibly one of the worst prints of the year. I agree that from this current scene only a handful of artists will go down as greats. That being said I think certain prints will go down as classics even if the artist doesn't gain legendary status. DSTQ springs to mind among others..

I hear what your're saying. No doubt he's a great artist but may have been a case of too much too soon.

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by Mister Frame Man on Nov 15, 2007 22:57:53 GMT 1, I had a customer come into my store just after the release of "21st Century", with one to frame. Before then I had not heard of "Micallef"! I fell in love with that image and had no idea of who he was or how much it would cost to get one - I just had to get one! I managed to get one from eyestorm for ยฃ750 which to me at the time was crazy. The most I had spent previously was ยฃ75 for "Barcode", "Love Rat" & "GWB" - This was serious money for me for a print at the time. Today it still has pride of place on my wall despite peaking at 9k(ish)? and now sitting at 6k(ish)? and will still be in the same position on my wall in 10 years time even if it worth ยฃ10 or ยฃ100,000!
Is that not what buying art is all about?
I happen to think that it WILL end up being worth much more than 6k in the future, but that image is staying on my wall despite any crash in USA, Japan, Slovakia or Outer Mongolia.
Perhaps in 40 years time my kids will benifit from me discovering "Micallef"!

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by afroken on Nov 15, 2007 23:18:39 GMT 1, A rare post from me, but here's my 2p worth as this topic gets me going....
I went to LA and was treated like shit. I bought a piece on the night and have since seen sense and pulled out. The majority of buyers were British and a good number from this forum. Show 1 gets bought by Hirst. Show 2 gets bought by people who believe, but frankly aren't influential buyers. This skews perceptions of a sell-out show.
I saw the prints online first and hated them. Saw them in person and loved them. 3 of them are now framed on my wall and, believe me, they are amazing. The lesson there? A large part of this scene is bases on online purchases. See a Banksy online and you know what it will look like in the flesh. Micallef (and in particular the Laz Prints) look crap on the screen, but believe me they are lush. Expensive but beautiful.
Why these prints? Someone decided they were the iconic images of the show. That was a poor decision. Micallef is not prolific in his output and most of his originals will never be seen again. The prints live on, so chosing the right image is paramount. I love these prints but they're too polarising as images.
Has he damaged his career? Depends where his market lies. If it's hedge fund managers, then yes. They look at this forum and at eBay before they'll be seen dead in a serious gallery or museum. if it's celebrities then he's probably got a long and fruitful career taking the piss out them.
That's all. Interesting times for Micallef. He's definitely not where I would imagine he thought he was. And whose fault is that?

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by bswift on Nov 16, 2007 0:25:09 GMT 1, I have to say that my feeling was that things started to nose dive after the London Laz events and the Micallef print release. My thoughts are that this felt across the group and that these 4 prints released will forever be tainted with the negative aspects of their release, thus never command the prices of DD or 21stCL, etc, irrespective of numbers released. It appears agreed across the board that GIWTBB was a good image and has been well received. However, the 4 prints released through Laz were weak and too much of the same-old-thing... didn't matter whether they look great close-up, they were not new, challenging images to delight and excite... I'm worried that Micallef has been damaged by the hype and the disaster of the recent release by Laz. Banksy, on the other had, releases a large edition of a strong image that is well received in its own right and, despite what the woe-sayers are typing on this forum, I doubt that the eBay prices will dip much in the next few weeks (months) before they are sent out. Same agent, different outcomes.... much of which boils down to the art itself...

i think micallef is too good an artist to be so easily damaged as you suggest. his work is of the highest order, imo, and whilst the print queue was a nightmare for all those there, this does not reflect on the quality of his work, again, imo.

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by Daniel Silk on Nov 16, 2007 0:48:33 GMT 1, Before I start Im just gonna say I don't understand how the American art market works and what direction its going but this is just my angle on it -
To me it seems the UK Street Art market is running the show here and in America, I know loads of people will say thats crap but the number of times I hear about American artists that are just about scraping along, and they get mentioned on here, and within a few days their website is crashing and the orders are flooding in I don't know whats wrong in America it just seem at the moment the UK art buyers are confident, and are moving forward ;D What percentage of Faile's prints are coming to UK collectors? How many of the Banksy LA prints have ended up back over here? I guess the price of the Pound against the Dollar has a big impact on the situation But it certainly appears to me that the UK buyers are controlling the game ;D For how long? who knows Shows held in America? hmmm I think the UK galleries are just feeling the water I don't believe they are going after American buyers as much as trying to impress UK Art collectors that the Artist is so big that they would have a show there PR stunt? ;D

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by finsburyparkranger on Nov 16, 2007 1:19:33 GMT 1, It looks like the US economy is grinding to a growth halt. Probably something to do with high oil prices and failed military occupations in oil rich countries and fraudulent accounting practices. All of which i think the UK entertains to a lesser extent and won't be effected in the same capacity.
The lesson to learn is A) don't rely on oil b) don't go to war c) Don't be a naughty little capatalist. ;D

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by Ripper1331 on Nov 16, 2007 2:06:22 GMT 1, The US market is not as familiar with this type of work and very few people know who banksy is here in LA let alone Micallef or the others. "Street art" is not considered as viable here in the US and is also not mentioned nearly as much in the press.
I would agree that most of the buyers are from the UK - I send about 90% of my prints over to the UK. But everyone is closing in on Christmas and holidays so the price drops and shuffling of prints is pretty normal for this time of year and not the sign of the end.

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by darjeeling on Nov 16, 2007 5:46:09 GMT 1, !Lets not forget some of the originals he produced for the show were amazing! CR I really don't like these. Look at the shoes on the soldier !?! Look at his helmet, his eyes? what's that black mark on his cheek? It doesn't have the detals and that nice sculpted look like some of his charcoals used to have. All of these pieces seem rushed. And the second piece, palm trees a hollywood star and an angel. Yeah I see what he's trying to get at but whatever. It's just not doing anything for me. Why do I need that on my wall?
Micallef's old self portraits were hot. These charcoals aren't.
And everyone seems to say they love GIWTBB - but I wonder if it's just the thousand people that own one that say that? It's really not an image that means anything to me or that I want to look at every day. But it is better executed than these.

Micallef Show = straw that broke the camel's back?, by Piece and Glove on Nov 16, 2007 5:52:25 GMT 1, I found the show slightly contrived, it was apparent the work was made with too much emphasis on the LA crowd
Of course it was, Antony painted it for the show, about the people who would be at the show, and about the culture of the town the show was in.
He ripped the piss out of all of it, and they bought it.

Some of my favorite street artists (and among the best in the world) are American....
