Micallef price free-fall, by craigf on Dec 1, 2007 19:56:53 GMT 1, Quite a few went v cheap on Thursday. When I say v cheap close or over ยฃ1k so hardly toilet paper money. I hope to get a well priced JD one day, but at the moment I will enjoy my GIWTBB and IM (which I paid ยฃ300 less than the release price ;D )

I'm not sure how many of them actually sold and suspect that reserves were not met in most cases. That said, it is a pefect time to pick up AM's work whilst the more ignorant flipper is panicking and selling at silly prices.

Micallef price free-fall, by Harveyn on Dec 1, 2007 21:03:53 GMT 1, Sorry I am going to repeat a few of my words from a previous thread.
I appreciate that AMs work in monetary terms is currently worth less today than it was 2 months back. What I do not understand is why our debates are so centered around the value of his work rather than its merit in artistic terms.
My personal opinion is that his work from a quality perspective at worst has stood stationary. If I could afford to buy one of his original pieces I assure you I would and it would be treasured amongst my collection.
I can't wait to see his next releases because for me the quality of his work has never been up for debate and thats the only true value I am concerned about.

it's the way of the world now i'm afraid . Football is run as a business now with clubs trying to squeeze every last drop of cash of of the supporter.
Order a pint and you barely get change from ยฃ4 - ยฃ 5 these days.
It costs a bomb to run a car,eat , drink and just live
Capitalism allows people to better themselves but also means we live ina society where we judge success in monetary terms.
I realy don't care if JD for example is ยฃ300 as per original price of ยฃ 2,500 as it was at it's peak . - If i was i would have flogged it to pay for something i'd dream up a bleeding heart story about - ie , new baby, new roof , new leg or god knows what else.
Love the art and be happy . Life's tough enough as it is .
Bring on the next piece AM !!!

Despite the fact that "most" people seems to buy because of the "Love" of it (cough... yeah right!) most people are buying with investment in their minds and can not bare the idea of loosing what they could have gained 2 months ago. That might be why monetary talks are a huge part of this forum?
Dont get me wrong it is nice to have a piece of work that is worth more what you paid for, but if bought just for the money, maybe stock is a more sensible game to play.
On another note, most of his prints are not even close to their faces value, with the exception of the overpriced 400 runs and extraordinary huge 1000 edition.
I find it also ridiculous when people are thinking Micallef is all over because his prices are dipping, Laz killed him by overpricing his work... Get a grip people, there is not many examples of artists, in fact almost none, with a records of exhibition with main institutions/museums beside his talent. Matt Small did the BP too if I am not mistaken, Swoon has been bought by the Moma and is well into the contemporary art field too, Lister is another example, and Micallef did the BP and will do a British Museum tour. Beside the talent of Conor Harrington, Neate, Choe and alike, I would like to think that there will be still plenty of future growth for Micallef as an artist.
When it comes back down to monetary value let us see in years to come... or maybe "years" is too long of a time to wait for !

Got dragged into some poncy place the other day and served by a bloke in a mask and with a pistol charging ยฃ 8.20 for 2 bottles of lager , and the cheeky t**t had the front to give me change on one of those little silver trays where you " supposed " to leave some as a tip .
We went to a proper pub after that but not before I nicked the tray and now have a shiny new ash tray

Micallef price free-fall, by craigf on Dec 1, 2007 23:53:13 GMT 1, From my perspective the dip in prices is allowing people who want AM's prints on their walls to buy them. I greatly appreciate his work, but was too slow to act when the FF's and JD's started moving up in price to get one. AM wanted the GIWTBB prices to be affordable and as stated above all other pieces accept the last Laz's are selling at significant premiums vs. their release prices
Re the auctions ending on Thursday none had reserves and the two I paid particular attention to had different (lucky) winners. I expect this to be short term dip as the quality of the pieces speak for themselves
Very final thing ManchesterMike if you are coming down on the 14th be prepared to hand over bills for your beer and get back shrapnel

Micallef price free-fall, by G-Man on Dec 2, 2007 19:29:46 GMT 1, The fact that there is so much debate over the prices does back up the argument that people only buy for investment.
The good thing about the Micallef prints, especially the GIWBB print is that it is a great image that appals to many audiences.
They should stand the test of time and even if they are only worth 2p in the future they are still great images that people will want on their walls
I love my GIWTBB

That's quite an assertion. I would argue that not everyone buys for investment and most people place more emphasis on whether or not they find the work interesting enough to put on their walls.

i read the first few post but to be honest i lost the will to live. this is not a science we are talking about, if you like, or god forbid love, antony's work then pay what you can afford to lose, otherwise go and play the stock exchange.
there are many factors, most of which have been debated and all are conjecture, the bottom line is take it or leave it.
antony will be going strong long after the hype has subsided, take advantage now, there is no way he is about go all eelus on us.....
frankly all this biting is tiresome but i respect the fact that we all have a right to say our piece, all i'd say is place the hate where it's deserved and think long term, this boy is special, again take it or leave it.................
in the words of mike skinner: "Love us or hate us, but don't slate us." lets push things forward..........

Micallef price free-fall, by darjeeling on Dec 2, 2007 21:29:05 GMT 1, The fact that there is so much debate over the prices does back up the argument that people only buy for investment. I don't agree at all, I think it really sucks to spend 2000 on a print that is selling for 1000 next year. That means less art I can afford next year. So being patient and being stingy about what you're willing to buy isn't being obsessed with 'investment' it's just not smart to drop this kind of money on things that are not necessities without being very careful.
While I like some Micallef work I don't think this is the kind of print that would appeal to most audiences. A sinister looking weird little kid with horns and angel wings staring obnoxiously into a mirror. Honestly, I don't think most people would care to have it on their walls.

Micallef price free-fall, by lesbianwednesdays on Dec 2, 2007 22:44:46 GMT 1, hey coach, must have been a long day.............. ;D it's from 'let's push things froward' by the streets. originally a dig at the state of new music in britain.
IMO the same logic could be applied to current trends in the art world, or at least our little world.

Micallef price free-fall, by darjeeling on Dec 2, 2007 22:56:09 GMT 1, I personally know an artist who has had work hung in the MOMA and Whitney Museum in NYC. (And about a dozen other museums worldwide) She is still struggling. Really struggling to make a living off of it. That stuff helps but there is absolutely no guarantee about what the future brings in any regards.

Darjeeling, contemporary art world and street art "bubble" are 2 different thing. Even tho Micallef is not known for any street art as a matter of fact yet he is part of the same "gender" due to Laz and probably people that collect him also collect urban art.
My post above was more aimed to compare the like in that 'Bubble", eg : Dface, Beejoir, Dolk,... I am pretty sure they do not have any museum and nationnal galleries shows planned soon or ever... but I could be wrong of course.

Micallef price free-fall, by dmandpenfold on Dec 3, 2007 19:49:38 GMT 1, Got dragged into some poncy place the other day and served by a bloke in a mask and with a pistol charging ยฃ 8.20 for 2 bottles of lager , and the cheeky t**t had the front to give me change on one of those little silver trays where you " supposed " to leave some as a tip . We went to a proper pub after that but not before I nicked the tray and now have a shiny new ash tray
f**k that bond, i hate pubs that expect tips, what's wrong with the world, if they do a good job i'll tip, not because they'll shove a silver tray under my nose.
i used to work in a pub when Tony Blair and The Minimum Wage were in shorts, some of these ponses should try living on GBP2 an hour, then you'll work hard for the tip
EDIT: oh and chips cost 10p a portion and there'd still be change out of 3 bob for the bus home eeeeh

Micallef price free-fall, by leumasdarnley on Dec 4, 2007 20:11:26 GMT 1, I think this is foolish talk IMO POW releases Lucy Beat13 releases lucy but in the end there is only one POW edition. Its not like Banksy is going to re-release old print images through LAZ the lash back would be immense the whole demand market would crumble. The fall in AM's prices are simple economics supply and demand. His runs were so small hense large demand and high prices. The crazy prices for the POW AM's before the drop were just not inline for what you were getting. Friendly fire great image but was it worth 2500 as an almost mono crome print vs the full color sweathearts like HFUNG in smaller editions. The bottom line is Laz and or AM botched the market so that more people could afford his art. By doing this he acieved what he wanted but IMO it was not in the best way. People who paid through the nose for the limited Laz 50 editions were smacked in the face with the dumptruck effect of the LA prints. But in the end its only art but it is interresting watching what happens only wish I didnt pay 1k for my GIWTBB .....
Just saw the re-worked Peacekeeper on the Ghetto I pray these are left overs from the release and not a new run, adding some spray to an existing whored out run .... omg the sky its falling!!!!!!!
