Micallef price free-fall, by robo on Dec 5, 2007 1:58:01 GMT 1, Whatever value they have, Mic's Uzi Lovers are one of my favorite prints of this year and are taking pride of place on my wall. I bought them at a higher price than they are now, so they may never be worth more than i paid, but i don't care.

Agreed. FF being one, which I just picked up for just under $2000 USD. Glad to see the price on AM stuff finally stabilizing...

Micallef price free-fall, by loucastel on Dec 7, 2007 0:11:18 GMT 1, I personally think they have a way to go yet ,down that is, I spoke to a friend of mine the other week who owns a gallery and he was saying he has bought very deep into Micaleff, and caught a cold ,no more like the flu, he was having trouble selling dirty delux and eventually sold it for just over 4k and that was through another gallery .some of Micaleffs pieces are fantastic others are just ok, I think the ones that will eventually are the ones with a clear message like we come in peace ,but even that has just sold on ebay for a fraction over 5k, whereas a little while ago was selling easy for 6-7k, quite a big drop. dont hold your breath for his prices to go back up for an awful long time if at all. sorry if this sounds very negative but the art world punters are fickle beings at best, whats hot one day is stone cold the next.

Micallef price free-fall, by dkla on Dec 7, 2007 0:11:32 GMT 1, Out of curiosity, for those who think so, what makes you think Micallef's work will stand the test of time? Tho I readily admit I'm no expert, from what I've seen so far his range seems to be pretty narrow. Not to mention he's relatively new on the scene, so it's not like he's already stood the test of some time. Saying any artist still young in his career will stand the test of time is a fairly bold statement, except when the artist truly has accomplished something(s) extraordinary, as Banksy has clearly done.

try looking at what antony has achieved, his 2nd prize alone in the BP portrait prize alone is a massive achievement, also his ability is astounding. i'm hardly an expert but i've been round enough galleries and seen people from piccasso to lichtenstien and a lot of others in between, and each one has a distinctive style and technique, antony too has that knack.
what will set him apart, or at least keep him in the game, will be his subject matter and content. if he stays at the cutting edge then i think he can go all the way, if he stands still and takes anything for granted then he will get chewed up and spat out.
i'm more than happy with the art of his i have and hope to add to it in the future.

Micallef price free-fall, by stuey09 on Dec 7, 2007 0:23:56 GMT 1, Maybe the 400 editions will struggle, except maybe Peacekeeper. But the Eyestorms, Laz's 50 editions and some of the PoW prints will always be in demand. The quality of this work is superb and will always appeal to an art buying public. As long as the supply doesn't outstrip the demand, it is inevitable that the price will be tasty. Bottom line, for me, is that I think he is an exceptional talent and regardless of market trends, I'll continue to collect his work.

Micallef price free-fall, by loucastel on Dec 7, 2007 0:33:13 GMT 1, As I have said before there have been artists in contempory art who have been voted artist of the year, and now find it hard to shift their work , to a lot of people (and I dont mean on this forum) the graff/urban art world is something very new with a lot of hype being given by the media, so winning different prizes now is fantastic for that artist but in a few months or years it will be just another trophy, ok the artist makes a lot of money in the here and now but im sure to a lot of artists that isnt the be all and end all, in this genre it is more about the message portrayed , as for his tour with the british museum, it will be good for him from an artistic point but it wont make people buy his paintings, prints etc. according to my friend, (who knows Micaleff well ) said this sudden rise to stardom was not what he wanted and is a bit bemused by the whole thing. but prices to me are a side issue, the important thing to me is the image and whether I like it or not. hopefully Anthony will still be here for many years to come ,maybe not ,who knows.

the BP portrait prize is not 'just another trophy' it is a massive deal, alright antony came second and it was a few years ago but it goes to show his talent transcends many artistic genres and as such his following is more diverse than any artistr regularly mentioned on this forum, fact.

If this was the one on Ebay it had a 22% buyers premium attached so the winner would have paid just under 1,700 for the print!
