Micallef price free-fall, by sausageboonwee on Dec 1, 2007 16:02:12 GMT 1, Just been looking at Micallef's prices which seem to be in free fall.
What's the main reason for this and does anyone think his prices are ever likely to recover?
Personally I think GIWTBB is this years best print so I guess it must be Laz's fault. I'm starting to think a Save my Soul will eventually make it's way onto my wall after all.

Micallef price free-fall, by sausageboonwee on Dec 1, 2007 16:06:37 GMT 1, I suppose minotaurs with uzis wouldn't sit well on every wall but some of his work is extremely good. Is this a blip and can he recover?

Micallef price free-fall, by manchestermike on Dec 1, 2007 16:08:34 GMT 1, Definite blip... His number of available prints has quadrupled in the space of a few weeks... quality always shines through though and Micallef will recover into next year

Micallef price free-fall, by afroken on Dec 1, 2007 16:13:02 GMT 1, Prices are still about 3 times what they were a year ago. hardly what i'd call a free fall. More like prices in the summer were over speculated and now they've settled. Anyway, you can't judge at this time of year. Wait for February when they'll started creeping up again.

Micallef price free-fall, by alsbabar on Dec 1, 2007 16:16:40 GMT 1, i think the answer is in the responses, if GIWTBB is the only print that will stand the test of time, then what does it say about the thousands of other prints out there, that thousands of people bought?

Do agree they really are goergeous in the flesh. I think alot of the slump/blip/dip whatever is the fact alot of people have spent hours slagging them off, due to the fact they missed out in the Laz release.

I'd say there would be a fair few Micas that will stand the test of time!

It simple in my eyes, the economy is below par and Micallef has shown that he's prepared to 'flood the market'. It will forever be a lesson to his peers. Do it once and it will forever effect your price not just because of loss of exclusivity but also because of future speculation surrounding future 'floods'. That combined with the fact that the market has learned that many POW prints are not limited editions (Just editions) meaning that GIMTBB and others could be brought out in hundreds of colourways in the future.
Those two facts together are great for the concept of 'art for the many' but terrible for people that thought they were buying into something a lot more exclusive. Buyer beware.
What i really want to know is were banksy's sold as 'editions' or 'limited editions' ? Anyone know? Just looked at trolleys, its not a 'limited edition' .

Exactly most of the time people are comenting without even seeing the prints in the flesh, and you can't really get a feel for something untill you have seen it in front of you .
I was not that keen on the Angel Bombers untill my bro got me one for a birthday present. I had been purely judging by the POW pictures and they did it no justice at all.....

Micallef price free-fall, by lastpost on Dec 1, 2007 16:31:01 GMT 1, I'm not sure it really affects Micallef directly...punish me if I am wrong... He is still making a VERY good living out of art I suggest? Most of his originals sold, and we all know how they were priced. All of his prints have sold out... Laz has made some mistakes with Micallef, but I don't think they are terminal?

Micallef price free-fall, by corblimeylimey on Dec 1, 2007 16:35:06 GMT 1, sausageboonwee your observations seem correct, JD recently sold for ยฃ908 (item no 320186391392) strangely enough it shows as selling for only ยฃ721 in the completed listings, I'd be gutted if I'd paid ยฃ2000 for one, but still happy if I bought it from POW for ยฃ200.
The Laz lithos were priced quite high at ยฃ1,175 for such a high run, on the other hand there was no shortage of people buying them up, unfortunately I think too many investors are getting involved, this causes much more demand than there would be from genuine fans who are buying for the art, when the investors pull out, a glut of prints appears & the value goes down and considering how many prints are out there it's probably too many for the amount of fans who are buying for the love of the art to absorb.
Just my 2p worth of opinions.

No Micallef should be alright, people that bought his art believing they were limited editions might not be though.
Apologies if im wrong on this but i've mentioned it before, no one challenged me and Lucy Mc has started issuing colourways of her old work on beat 13. No disrespect to lucy either as thats her right as she evidently didn't sell POW an exclusive contract and no dis-respect to POW as they were clear it was only an 'edition' but its important collectors learn the subtle difference between and 'edition' and a 'limited edition'
The door is wide open for Banksy to do his final act of art vandalism.

An edition is only limited to never having exactly the same colours used in reproducing the print. A limited edition cant be reproduced. That seems to be the way POW are currently defining the concepts anyway.

So what they could do an Eelus on us and reproduce everything in differing colourways? That has ruined my weekend

Micallef price free-fall, by graeme501 on Dec 1, 2007 16:56:40 GMT 1, people need 2 remember that these micallef prints were priced at roughly ยฃ300 for most, so its hardly freefall, making a grand on what u paid
if u bought on the secondary market ( like me ) u paid what u were prepared 2 pay, if u won an action at say ยฃ2000, then that was the price that u decided u could afford to own a piece of art u liked - then b happy, u have the artwork at a price u deemed fair at the time
if u bought for investment ... then tough titties

Micallef price free-fall, by finsburyparkranger on Dec 1, 2007 17:11:10 GMT 1, Sorry i'm not trying to bang the drum for more exclusivity in the art market. I love the idea of unlimited runs personally and have always said that is the way to overcoming the suits buying up all the art before the average joe gets a chance. I just want people to be more aware that sometimes they think they may be buying limited edition prints when they are not.
