That's actually why I like it. This is a totally abstract 'wall' piece but is acting in the same fashion as Parla's 'journal' pieces in recording his life. He's got a lot going on right now and that frantic energy is coming through in the work. I also like the use of Miami colors, a nod to where he grew up, combined with elements seen in the Memory Documents work titled Eastern Bamboo Forest and reflective of his many travels to, and close bond with, Asia and its cultures. Throw in the use of Krink purple(and its NYC origin) and you have a very complete, high-energy Parla work that is a stunning example of his work.

I don't suppose Elms has a new more client friendly approach to pricing. Anyone know the range for this exhibition?

José Parlá - Adaptation | Translation, by Filipino Box Spring Hog on Sept 15, 2008 4:45:29 GMT 1, BRUTAL is an accurate word....I think the range is too expensive and far beyond the universe of too expensive...honestly though, it's worth every penny and if I had enough and was also "someone special" as I think you might need to be at this point - I'd be all over it.

Unfortunately the price is almost a secondary concern over whether or not you're allowed to buy one.

And that's one of the reasons I agree with Mike. One feels like this has become an elitist club with no opportunity to get in - originals not available and highly overpriced, no prints releases for people less off and the ones which were released earlier are well below his standard and hugely overpriced - well, demand and supply I suppose. The other reason being - I am not that bothered with abstract work. Saying that I am not denying his huge talent but is it for me? No thanks.

Would be nice to get a doodle, given whats been mentioned above. If anyone was watching, one of Parla's prints from the run of 25 went for just shy of £2k on ebay last week.

I understand where you are coming from, but disagree quite a bit.
Does it seem that the market for Parla's work is very tight? Yes. But for that, you can thank "Mr. Canvas/Watercolor on Ebay", or "Mr. Got a Commission and Am Going to Jam it into Andipa Before the Paint is even Dry", or "Mr. Fronting for a Gallery", or even "Mr. Watercolor selling in Auction just Before Big Show Opens and Skewing all Pricing Plans".
Things are not elitist, just protective. This is a man's career and his future. It is the means with which he supports himself and his family. The rampant flipping seen with third-tier auction houses, internet dealers, ebay, and the like can have serious, negative effects especially when an artist like Parla is approaching the more established contemporary art market. Screening buyers and only selling to trusted patrons are signs that Elms is being a gallerist as opposed to merely a dealer and that the long-term is being chosen over the short dollar.

I personally think his work would translate very poorly. The only future prints I would ever want to see would be the result of him sequestering himself in Long Island, working with Universal Limited Art Editions(ULAE), and doing an elaborate lithograph using 9+ stones. That experience would involve working with true printmaking artists, learning from them, and producing work in tandem. From his work with Hajime Kimura on the bizen pottery, and the large plates produced at the San Giorgio ceramic studio in Albisole, Italy, it becomes pretty clear that Parla is more interested in the learning experience and developing his art as opposed to simply reproducing work.

José Parlá - Adaptation | Translation, by manty on Sept 15, 2008 12:38:51 GMT 1, Nice post Mose
Strange that the same gallery manages Neate, and his secondary market is somewhat differant to Parlas, ie every auction in the UK there seems to be a neate 'elms' peice in, and todate I dont think there has been a Parla sold anywhere publically except primary sales.
