No worries...
Those are the new MTA billboards that are all over LA (not sure if they did them in house or contracted out to a design firm)...as to the inspiration, I don't know any details, as corporate america has often been inspired by street art (or ripping off, depending your perspective...LOL).
The city of LA is pretty broke right now (like the rest of California in terms of budgetary and infrastructure related matters especially)...so my guess is that they are hustling pretty hard in my opinion in promoting the bus system to try & get the ridership up tremendously. Those ads are all over town and definitely stick out.
Why some have not been altered...not sure...but those kinda present themselves as a big red bullseye in my opinion.

Mear One ๐บ๐ธ Street Art โข New Print Release , by Baurmann Gallery on Feb 27, 2011 3:18:33 GMT 1, Susie Lee interviewed MEAR about his new rooftop mural for Arrested Motion...it delves into his inspirations and background on the piece.
From AM:
arrestedmotion.com/2011/02/streets-video-mear-one-in-los-angeles/
Mear One just finished up a brand new mural on Glendale Blvd. in Los Angeles. Building on themes typical of his work, and set in one of his expansive allegorical landscapes signature to his style, the piece depicts a young girl on the street huddled under a blanket, while surrounded by an oil field in a toxic wasteland.
โItโs about innocence thatโs been lost and how the world has ruined the future of its children and left them stranded in a cold barren and destroyed world that once was beautiful. Sheโs dealing with the by-products of the decisions of greed and capitalism. I did the mural in that location because people line up there every morning to get on the 2 freeway, and it gives you something to reflect on while youโre sitting in traffic running up gas.โ

Mear One ๐บ๐ธ Street Art โข New Print Release , by Baurmann Gallery on Mar 6, 2011 5:51:15 GMT 1, Great photos - I love the serious looking guy smoking a butt with the Banksy stamp in the back ground.
Thank you very much...
That gentleman would be Richard Duardo, the master printer himself...it was pretty awesome of him to be out hanging out, helping pull the edition and be there almost the entire time it was created.
All business aside and in addition to how amazing it was to have him right there to help make this edition pretty insane, especially technically [in my opinion]...it was a REALLY good time actually hanging out, hearing lots of stories and sharing some drinks. Though LONG hours w/ MEAR & myself [and the film crew] being there every single day, this was a really fun edition to produce due to Richard chilling the whole time & having Tony printing Shep's edition right next to ours too.

Mear One ๐บ๐ธ Street Art โข New Print Release , by Baurmann Gallery on Mar 6, 2011 20:45:05 GMT 1, For more background, the printer working w/ Richard Duardo [shown in the pics & below] who graciously did an amazing job with the entire edition was Ivan Alpuche, the son of Joe Alpuche of Self Help Graphics.
Basically, Ivan has been around screen-printing his whole life. Ivan had been working over with his father for some time [over @ Self Help] but Richard Duardo brought him in to work on our edition, which we were very stoked on!
MEAR and Ivanโs father Joe have worked together [in the past] and MEAR has a tremendous amount of respect for him, so working with his son on this project was an awesome opportunity we looked forward to. He did a fantastic job and worked tirelessly to get everything absolutely perfect, to which in the end, we could not have been happier. Especially to have Ivan & Richard working on the edition, with MEAR there every step of the way, really was a great collaborative effort!

That's funny you ask that...I asked Tony [their main printer] the same thing...
Basically, when they were doing the Shepard Fairey edition, the beige/brownish ink they were using smelled extremely potent that I thought it was some sort of oil based or something pretty strong. With seeing Richard light up some cigarettes, I had to ask if we were going to ignite anything
Tony assured me that they only use [primarily, unless special circumstances] acrylic or water based inks. Those are supposed to be non-flammable, though I would not want to drop a lit cigarette in anything...lol
I am sure the solvents and other cleaners and paper of coarse is extremely flammable, but Richard is a pro to say the least...you would be amazing @ how clean he keeps his shop for what a messy endeavor that printing is...he pretty much keeps his shop spotless, even during the projects, not just after the days work is done. I was so impressed over his level of organization and how freaking clean he [and everyone @ MM] kept EVERYTHING...
I am sure it could be a hazard, but Richard turns it in to a fun environment due to how well they have their stuff together, organized and systems in place...and are happy to extend the courtesy/hospitality as long as you don't do anything stupid
So toxic...yes [if you breathe any of that in non-stop in a non-ventilated environment]
Flammable...depends [if you do something dumb]...lol
Likely to cause an explosion...luckily no

Mear One ๐บ๐ธ Street Art โข New Print Release , by Baurmann Gallery on Mar 7, 2011 20:05:29 GMT 1, No worries, like I said, I asked the same thing
One additional note...a can of spray paint on the other hand, if it gets hot enough or is left somewhere it should not be [where it gets REALLY hot], will DEFINITELY explode, no question about it. When it's been some of the hottest days [and some of these guys are still painting in the blazing sun, no shade]...the first time I saw an ice chest full of paint, I thought it was a little odd...until I thought about how volatile 1 can was, let alone 50-100, so I was happy to see that nice little trick!

Mear One ๐บ๐ธ Street Art โข New Print Release , by Baurmann Gallery on Mar 8, 2011 0:17:44 GMT 1, Here is the completed video from YEM ONE [also with the help of Roger Griffith]. They both were just absolutely amazing about being there every day and working those same crazy hours we did to get everything rocked out...their help was just truly invaluable!
Roger always does our videos, but YEM [in addition to being one of MEAR's longest/best friends and one of LA's old school graffiti pioneers since 1983] & Roger are close friends and work very well together...YEM has a very different style, to which we were very interested to see his artistic vision manifest.
The end product...we were absolutely blown away with and deeply thank him [and Roger as well] for all of their hard work on the project!!!

Thank you, as honestly, that is a very difficult thing sometimes when selling a print, as you need to get it out there to any possible interested collectors, but in a proper, respectful and non-pushy way that does not piss people off.
In my opinion, it doesn't matter what it is, people don't like to be hounded non-stop asking to buy something and have a REALLY hard sell thrown at them.
My viewpoint is people know what they want and if you try to sell them to hard and be too pushy, even if somebody wanted something, how it was being sold could put someone off in a big way.
I personally like when there are questions that arise, as it opens a dialogue and allows me to relay some first hand stories or perspectives. I can also ask if anyone has any other questions too, which is a great thing in terms of providing clarification, insight or possibly just hearing a cool anecdote/story from following up with the artist.
Sharing all of the photos [especially due to the access I often have] is a part of it that I enjoy tremendously too and really like doing, even when nothing is for sale.
Thanks so much for the kind words on the print too!
