Damien Hirst Superstition Poster, by numusic on Apr 6, 2007 20:43:26 GMT 1, I like the images of the stained glass lookin butterflies. I think side by side they will look great. Only chance Ill have at anything signed by Hirst that has a gallery backing it . Im happy if its worth 10k or worth face value. Will be interesting to find out exactly how many were or will be signed though.
Why does It doesn't matter if he signed 1 or a million, it's an autograph. Like a signed book but without the words

Damien Hirst Superstition Poster, by policeaware on Apr 6, 2007 21:01:01 GMT 1, All the fun was over by the time I looked, I would have been interested in a The Death Of God (portrait) signed, If anyone gets one and doesn't want it, contact me, but I don't want to pay more than ยฃ75+VAT. It was actually ยฃ75 VAT included.
I was invoiced ยฃ82 for the print but then I decided I didn't really want it.

Surely that provides some of the snob value you connect with value?

I think you'll find my positon on signed/unsigned hasn't changed. If you're buying as an investment buy signed, if you're buying cos you like the art buy unsigned, you can get 5 for the price of one these days. My argument on the brightside against unlimited editions is based on the fact that screenprints by their nature are limited. Its in inescapable fact.. hence the offset lithos from Hirst.

Damien Hirst Superstition Poster, by Strange Al on Apr 7, 2007 11:27:45 GMT 1, First off - respect Sausage for posting the link last night. You've obviously made a few forum members very happy overnight! I was online last night when the link was posted and decided to pass up on this set of lithos. Although I wasn't able to get a proper look at the images on my computer (the pictures on the website are pretty low res), they didn't really do much for me. I'm always interested to hear what it is that people like about the art they buy. I've been through the thread and it seems loads of forum members have bought the posters, but only a couple have commented on why they like them. So tell me, what sets this series of images apart from Hirst's other works (many of which you can easily get hold of as litho posters for well under ยฃ75)? Well everyone steamed in and bought the signed and the unsigned are still sitting there, so I guess it's more about forum members wanting Hirsts autograph more than anything else. A tiny bit of 20th century art history perhaps. I've done the same in the past, I regard it as a major naive mistake on my part, which is why this interests me.
Thanks Nu, Gordy and Rico for responding to my question. I find it interesting that of the people who have bought one of the posters, only Rico took the time to answer my question about what appeals to them about the image.
I have no doubt that Damien Hirst is the most influential British artist of the last 10 years. Even if you don't like his work (and I have to say only a very few of his pieces really speak to me personally), you have to accept that he's played a major role in furthering the modern art scene both here in the UK and abroad. Arguably, without him our Mr Banksy wouldn't be where he is today (question whether that's a good or bad thing).
I can therefore fully appreciate the lure of owning a piece signed by Mr Hirst (even if it is a litho poster). As Nu said, it's a chance to own a very small piece of Art history . And, I don't deny that these pieces are more accessible, both visually and financially, than most of Hirst's work. Though, I find it difficult reconciling the fact that much of that lure is the perceived value of the piece deriving from an ink squiggle and not actually the art itself. It effectively turns art into a commodity and that's not why I started collecting.
I'm as happy as the next person that my print collection is now worth many times what I paid for it. And like most people here, I've sold pieces from my collection to fund my habit and will almost certainly do so in the future. Though, I don't buy art that I don't like aesthetically and have some sort of emotional connection with. Each to their own, but in my view if money is what motivates you to purchase a piece of art then you're not buying art!

Its not the cistine chappel but it is a nice wee piece of contempoary art memorabilia. There has been alot of stuff for sale recently that I havent bought because either I dont like it or i cannot justify the cost for certain cartoon characters, badly designed wall paper or car boot tat, but dont feel the need to rail on about it for several days after the fact and moaning about those that did, its great being able to choose to buy something.

Not quite the equivalent IMO. Soupcans poster is your standard 4 colour litho poster on thin paper, whereas DH's is at least on heavier paper and has the extra 5th colour, metallic gold.
I don't like the image on the soupcans poster and do like the Gold posters.
Of course it is still just a poster I have no doubt about that, but Hirsts art sells for much more than Banksy's and a signed Banksy (even from POW) is at least ยฃ250 - ยฃ400 more than a non signed, so to have Hirst's signature on one of his posters for the added cost of ยฃ45 is a bargain, and does make the poster a little more special.
As I said in a previous post, I'd like one of The Death Of God (preferably the portrait version) so if anyone changes their mind on what they've bought or has a spare, please PM me.

Damien Hirst Superstition Poster, by fautebol on Apr 8, 2007 0:31:01 GMT 1, I find it interesting that of the people who have bought one of the posters, only Rico took the time to answer my question about what appeals to them about the image.
Maybe because some people felt like they had to justify their purchase and nobody has to do it (I understand it's not what you asked). I have bought the "red" gold one. It's a combination of the signature and the image. At the beginning, I could not find the signed gold ones on the site and decided to pass regarding the Superstition poster (I felt it looked too much what it is: an exhibition poster). Thus, it's not only the signature like some people implied.
I don't need anything to put on my walls right now (small appartment, will move, etc..). I don't have much cash now and I normally prefer less pieces of art on walls but nice ones (I prefer kind of a minimalist design normally). Indeed, I don't really see the point in buying cheaper stuff and then spending 250ยฃ to frame it....But, I do like plenty of stuff...Thus, what is my ongoing idea (maybe inconsciously to justify my purchases): design one big wall of my living room in the future in a street style (Bast, Faile,...) and pretty much fully covered (the rest being minimalist)...This could just be put somewhere there...I don't feel I own an original piece of art of Damien Hirst...No...I won't have an original Damien Hirst...Neither I have the money for it, nor do I like his work enough for it..."Love, Lies, Bleeding" signed by Damien Hirst could just go nicely there....I like the picture and since it's signed, even if maybe quite badly printed, it could still look ok...Pretty snobbish certainly, but an unsigned poster would not be "fun"...It's only a poster and not AAARRRRTTTT...Cool, it's exactly what I needed...I can play with it, frame it with crosses and I should not offend anybody...I just hope I can hide the name of the gallery, the date and keep the signature......
I had ten minutes to decide...Maybe, I won't "use" it...But if I passed I could not decide about it later...I'm still unsure if it was a good thing to buy, but I have no regrets...
Thus, in summary just for fun...
PS: I would not buy the soup cans (signed or unsigned). I don't like it.
