UK Budget - 2009, by Daniel Silk on Apr 22, 2009 14:07:39 GMT 1, "A much-trailed scheme to encourage the scrapping of old cars is confirmed – drivers will be given £2,000 towards a new vehicle, in exchange for cars over 10-years-old from next month. The scheme runs to March 2010."
What a crazy idea
So this is for people who can afford to buy a new car in the first place So the rich who are looking for a new car can buy a secondhand one for a few hundred quid, and then get £2,000 off the price of that new car they were gonna buy anyway ;D Nice!
I drive a second hand heap that cost me £750 and has over 187,000 miles on the clock I will never be able to afford a new car, and I expect most of the population are in the same position
What do you think of todays Budget?

UK Budget - 2009, by manty on Apr 22, 2009 14:14:47 GMT 1, Dunno, but this looks like a get in debt scheme from what you say, might be good for the car industry
Is it for UK produced cars only?
What cars are made in the UK Now?

Great idea by the government
Will just see more people "living" in tax havens, with off-shore accounts etc... once again this idiot government shoots themselves in the foot
– drivers will be given £2,000 towards a new vehicle, in exchange for cars over 10-years-old from next month. I don't want a new car... The environmental damage sustained in the ram materials for the manufacture of a new car is far worse than emisisons of an older one this government has no f**king idea...
There was something in a couple of papers about this last week in the US - and it offsets very quickly due to the improved emissions etc of the new car - after about a year (less I think) of running the new car the old car is worse for the environment

UK Budget - 2009, by Deleted on Apr 22, 2009 14:40:04 GMT 1, but MM they're also tying up the tax havens across the world, so maybe rich people will have to start acting with a little more integrity and social awareness? I wouldn't count on it, but you know I have faith.

UK Budget - 2009, by Daniel Silk on Apr 22, 2009 14:43:53 GMT 1, I think all the talk of tightening up on tax havens is never gonna happen Most of the people in power across Europe know the system back to front and probably use the tax havens themselves.

UK Budget - 2009, by manchestermike on Apr 22, 2009 14:45:23 GMT 1, after about a year (less I think) of running the new car the old car is worse for the environment A link would be ideal mike, really interested in this. T obe honest I don't believe that crushing a car that's only 10 years old and sending it to landfill can be beneficial to anyone, other than car delaers and the Govt who pick up VAT revenue off the car purchases... my fleet is an 83, ,85, 88, 92 and I won't be scrapping ANY of them, certainly not for £2k.
Will have a gander - I can't remember which paper it was in though - will see if I can spy it

I seem to recall it's already happening, there's been a consesnus across the world that too much money has been hidden away in offshore accounts that should rightfully be going into the tax coffers of governments everywhere. And rightly so, just because you're rich is doesn't give you the right to not pay what is fair and just.

UK Budget - 2009, by Daniel Silk on Apr 22, 2009 14:51:02 GMT 1, Yeah, it cant be good for the environment to scrap cars over 10 years old that might have nothing wrong with them They should be encouraging car manufacturers to produce cars that last longer and get nearer 500,000 miles on the clock before they need to be scraped.
Whats better?
Cars that are fuel efficient, with small engines that only last 100,000 miles
Cars that are less efficient, with larger engines that last 250,000+ miles
I don't know whats best but I dont think they are thinking about the bigger picture

Not forgetting the enviromental impact of actually building a new car.
But I am a lot of a petrolhead, so I am now out of this 'its ok if its got a 500cc engine' discussion :-)

UK Budget - 2009, by Existencil on Apr 22, 2009 15:19:18 GMT 1, It's an absolute load of tosh. Labour got us into the current mess by failing to regulate banks. Now their punishing the people who are still paying the price for their mistakes. Somebody who earns £150k per year (probably through their own effort and ambition) is screwed for 50% tax, while the bank chiefs are sitting pretty with fantastic pensions.
In the meantime, their going to spunk £2,000 for every car over ten years old. How can you give away money when there is nothing left to lend!? The money should go to compenstate those who've lost jobs and houses.
Tosh. Absolute toshbag.

errrrr check your facts when did the huge amount of deregulation of the banking system occur? Wasn't half as recently as you'd like to think
it's also nice to read how people who earn more, should be treated differently to others in the population
p.s. I'm no labour fan

UK Budget - 2009, by Existencil on Apr 22, 2009 15:30:17 GMT 1, Yep, anyway.
If you earn £150k per year, you should pay more. But you shouldn't pay that much. This country is so quick at rewarding the failures and the layabouts. To slow to reward success and entrepreneurial drive.
Toshbag.

The emissions stuff doesn't much come into it in the U.K due to emission testing being part of the M.O.T. requirement. The carbon footprint of producing new cars is quite shocking and much worse (ironically) for hybrids. Also there's the aspect of removing huge numbers of second hand spare parts which are now available locally in scrap yards but would then have too be manufactured and shipped. It all adds up and I don't believe it can be off set that soon, if at all.

This is a similar incentive that Obama gave the Americans, as an answer to a global recession deliberately orchestrated by the American government. Obama's first step toward recovery was to offer tax incentives on all new snow sledges Darling talks about a 38 Billion pound borrow when the true figure is likely to be around 160 Billion. SMITH, STRAW, and others have been caught fiddling their expenses Smith even put in for an 80pence bath plug. Bailed out the banks with Taxpayers money. as the unempoyment figures rise. and we are offered ever more dumb ways to ''spend our way out of Debt'' this time by giving the car industry a helping hand. This government hasn't got a clue. Their just a motley crew of wool pullers.

Blah blah blah oohhhh the poor rich people.
Quick at rewarding the failures ? what like me ? I'm now getting just short of £6k from this country every year because I only earn an average wage doing a socially responsible job and I couldn't keep my family housed and fed without it. This government, which I neither support or have voted for, has done more financially than ANY other to help and support hard working people. That's what keeps it going round, workers on low wages. Too slow too reward entrepreneurial drive ? what are you after a bonus for flogging postcards you nick from shows ?
