Looks like there is a small element of superhero referencing going on, also glad to see it's been kept to a minium.

No pic to show you Wiz, but i agree they were the strongest pieces from that show.
Personally i think the Pop Con piece is pretty tidy, like the 'face lift' references around the outside of it...

and yes readily understand he's called dface and YES he defaces others work
but can I be given a reason to see something in this work please? Just one
I've loved the original eyecon work, for me he took some powerful portraits of some important icons of our time and added his own original touch in effect making them a new an interesting individual within these 'portraits', kurt Cobain looked like a caged lion in Kant Complain and the beetle reference with Lennon simple/stupid and wonderful
when i look at these'pastiches' I see none of the warmth and love for a subject area

i think sometimes people forget that dface has his history based in illustration and design, i would not really refer to him as an artist. I think he would readily admit that as well.

DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by Eton Groover on Sept 9, 2009 11:23:33 GMT 1, Some people have their moments.
Street art is about art on the street. Images resonating with people, zeitgeist.
Dface is not an artist who can innovate and come up with shows with sufficient artistic integrity to stand up on their own.
He was all about those classic images which will still stand the test of time, however every show since is just a weakening echo of that.

interesting thanks for that jboy, so i shouldn't view him artistically and perhaps shouldn't be surprised at the coldness of his work?

I totally "understand" that. It really doesnt take a genius does it? I mean his name is dface. Dress it up anyway you like Jboy, it is a rip-off. Just like Warhol ripped things off. It might seem like im critising dface for it, i was'nt. Dface is a pop artist/graphic design illustrator it's what i expect from him and think he executes it very well. Iv got no problem with it at all, i too have "ripped off" Warhol for a tee print that will be in stores soon, so just because im using the term rip-off, it doesnt mean im being negative. It's the execution and idea that matters when you are ripping off a previous work or style.

DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by sand on Sept 9, 2009 11:52:05 GMT 1, I guess you either love his work or hate it.
I think a lot of people miss the actual point of his work.
He defaces (clues in the name) / reappropriates / subverts...call it what you will, iconic images from the past and the modern day to create something new that sums up the world we all live in at this moment.
Whilst 'eyecons' focused upon the modern worlds fascination with celebrity and fame, 'aPOPcalypse now' was very much about the fall from grace of America and the old ideals of the 20th century, 'Ludovico Aversion Therapy / All Your Dreams Belong To Us' seems focused very much on the idea of advertising and consumer culture of the 21st century. All of these are issues that you hear about / are bombarded with on a daily basis.
People may call it 'ripping off' other artists work, but he does it for a reason - there always seems to be some sort of meaning behind the work that some people fail to see โ or are not willing to see beyond the initial work.
I find a lot of folks find it hard to see any 'emotion' in the work. I guess D* doesn't leave part of his soul in the work like Bacon, Picasso or even Micallef or Neate. But I guess that's not what he's about. His work is very clean and clinical โ probably something to do with him being a graphic designer in the past, the notions of living a life where everything is perfect.
People also forget that it's only really been 3 years since his first show at Stolen Space in October 2006. Since than he has had 3 very different exhibitons. People need to remember that it is still very much early stages for a lot of artists in this 'scene'. D* probably has a good 30++ years of creating art if he chooses to do so. So for those who are expecting massive strides forward in a space of year, I guess you maybe disappointed.
I think the big colour pieces from the show are excellent. However a lot of the HMP seem rather poor. Nonetheless I think overall the exhibition is excellent and a good platform for his next American show which should be in LA, โlike LA. Itโs everything my work is โantiโ embodied in a city. Lala land โ that name fits it brilliantly. So Iโm looking forward to LAโ.
