Banksy in Los Angeles, by quicksnap on Apr 21, 2010 9:34:24 GMT 1, many may not know this yet, but the big rat on Melrose, the one that is in the film that has the line "I'm out of bed, what more do you want from me?" (or something along those lines) was removed today or yesterday. There is now a blue tarp covering what is left of that wall. that was the longest standing Banksy piece in LA, that i know of, and we have just lost it. it is a real shame that people can't appreciate these pieces where they are. thats why LA has no culture...we either white-wash it or cut it out.

If there is a blue tarp up, its covering a white wall...
and I think the building is currently being rented to a medical marijuana dispensary...

I'm pretty sure that Banksy pieces in every city he has visited have disappeared (either taken or painted over). By your logic, no major city has culture. Unless you are just bashing on L.A., in which case I will presume that you are not originally from there and are just ignorant of the vast culture that the city has ...

Banksy in Los Angeles, by lc3 on Apr 22, 2010 5:21:48 GMT 1, Since one can assume Thierry isn't helping Banksy get walls in LA anymore (he's keeping them for himself?), he had to turn to another source. Again inshallah, very nice post. Thanks. One thing I wanted to comment on is regards to the quote above: I wouldn't assume that MBW isn't still assisting w/spots (or whatever)... And in fact, where the piece was on LaBrea & 4th is very close to his studio (La Brea & 12th).

I am originally from here. LA has always been "out with the old and in with the new". there are very few buildings that last any substantial amount of time here. the city only has other cultures and bastardizes them. i like LA just fine, but to say it has a "vast culture" is giving it too much credit. Sorry if you love LA so much, but it is possible to live somewhere your whole life and see it for what it is. You are entitled to your opinion of it, just as much as I am.
As far as pieces being taken, the reason it sucks, when it comes to that particular piece, it because it stood for so long. it was nice to see, especially since "No More Heroes" has been gone for awhile now. When I drove by, i saw raw wood frame under the tarp, which was only covering the amount of space the piece took up.

I think it's really easy for people to buy into the popular perceptions of LA. I agree, it's taken the city far too long to really value its architecture, but I think that saying LA only bastardizes other cultures reflects a very myopic viewpoint.
While it is sad to hear the Banksy piece is gone, to those of us in LA, it was much more of a blow to lose Saber's piece in the LA River.
