"Avalon Distribution has taken theatrical rights for Spain to Banksy documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop, following the film’s positive reaction at Sundance and Berlin. Avalon sealed the deal with Cinetic International and plans to release the film in the autumn. Exit Through The Gift Shop charts the relationship between the celebrated graffiti artist Banksy and a French videographer Thierry Guetta who befriends him and ultimately pursues his own artistic ambitions. Banksy is featured throughout the film in shadow as he recalls events through a voice modifier. Welsh actor Rhys Ifans narrates. Jaimie D’Cruz produced and Holly Cushing and James Gay-Rees served as executive producers. Cinetic has already sold the film to Madman for Australia and Revolver for the UK, who released it in cinemas at the end of last week."

"EVER looked at a piece of modern art and thought, "Only an idiot would pay for that guff"? Banksy feels your pain. The Bristol graffiti lord has made a documentary supposedly about the rise of "hit street artist Mr Brainwash". We see Brainwash - real name Thierry Guetta - go from being a wannabe documentary maker filming Banksy at work, to an art world superstar. But watch carefully and you'll spot some nicely-placed clues telling you it's all an epic spoof - building towards a masterful real life stunt when Thierry (aided by Banksy and his cronies) churns out ten years' worth of rubbish paintings in a few days and flogs them for $1million in less than a week. "It's not Gone With The Wind, but there's a moral in there," muses our director. Too modest. It's a great insight into how Banksy and his ilk operate. OUT NOW"

Correct.

Correct again. When you see ETTGS you will understand exactly how cr@p MBW is at art. He does nothing himself apart from hype.

Banksy doesn't make all of his work, but that dunt seem to worry anyone!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Cedric Mnich on Mar 10, 2010 15:13:37 GMT 1, Well Silky, it could be debatted... I know Art is as much a matter of idea as of realization. I know some old masters had some assistants painting some details or secondary things on a work. But well, I have less respect for artists who have their Art done by others, especially if it is the whole piece. That includes Hirst, Koons, Murakami or Warhol to name a few. Having assistants is a thing. Paying artists to have art done for you is another (from my humble point of view). Well, I don't know, but I prefer artists who do their stuff themselves.

Right, staged by Banksy, to show how with hype and lots of help from real artists you can turn a crap film maker with no artistic talent into........wait for it...........you guessed it, an artist.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Daniel Silk on Mar 10, 2010 15:42:24 GMT 1, In PR terms, who do you think gained the most or of this film? Out of 100.
I would say - Mr Brainwash = 50 Banksy = 30 Shepard Fairey = 15 Other Artists = 5

interested to know the statistical model connected to public relations you've used to calculate these figures?
using my own statistical model based on toast falling butter side down or up I've calculated the following out of 10
Mr Brainwash - -2
banksy - 5
shep - 1.5 the dog ate the toast

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by boaty on Mar 10, 2010 15:49:29 GMT 1, I would say, at this point: Banksy = 70 Mr Brainwash = 20 Shepard Fairey = 5 Other Artists = 5
The hype primarily helps Banksy at this point - with no US release and all....the bigger MBW and Shep fans in the US don't yet have skin in the debate....

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Daniel Silk on Mar 10, 2010 15:51:02 GMT 1, Nex, thats the problem exactly!
You see it like that, but I think other people who might not know anything about the artists before watching the film might well see it differently And I think the surge in interest in Mr Brainwash's work shows that So do we think Banksy is happy with this outcome?

So really if we don't like his work we should be blaming his team of workers Maybe now he has some money under his belt he can afford to employ some better people? Seriously!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by andyp10 on Mar 10, 2010 16:04:28 GMT 1, So the cinema in Aberdeen is finally getting the film in ont he 19th.. But it is only listed until the 25th and i come back for a visit on the 26th.. Hopefully they have yet to put up the newer listings.. Guess it worked out for the best, having the release delayed in ABDN! Well unless i dont get to see it! But i doubt they'll only have it in or a week!
Rowan only showing it for a week in Leeds so maybe the same up your way.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by naughtyshorty on Mar 10, 2010 17:24:08 GMT 1,
Oh come on guys...you couldn't see the mouth so why say it wasn't coming from his mouth. I'm sure he's got 20 minutes to spare for his appearance in the movie, don't look for a reason for him not to. No conspiracy, no other person...just Banksy. There isn't even really a point questioning it, it there? [/quote]
Well, for a guy who is hugely secretive, filming in a location where you're going to need 10+ people to do the footage (sound, lighting, cameras, runner, producer, director etc) that's a lot of people that are going to see him for 20mins + of filming, as well as the fact that all these people are coming into his secret studio.. if you believe that was his actual studio, rather than a mocked up one with a few banksys in the background (i'm not disputing the other scenes were in his studio, just the interview ones).
plus, from the intonnation from his voice, maneurisms and gesticulation, if you came into regular contact with banksy, but didnt know who he was, you would have a pretty good idea from watching that film. If i was banksy, i certainly wouldnt use my voice, and i certainly wouldnt be filmed like that.. if you were banksy, would you?
As for wiki and removal of rings ok true true, but the point is the footage pre interview of him was over a period of time, not just one point, and all of those things were consistently on him during that period, but they all disappeared when it came to the interview shot. Plus, in the interview in the Sunday Times, he acknolwedges a Mrs B, so there is a wife, but not for the guy in the interview...
does it really matter? nope. do i have too much time on my hands and am i too oberservational for my own good? probably. but i think the only time we saw Banksy in the film was during the outside graff bits...
