BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Sohoria on Jan 21, 2010 22:37:34 GMT 1, MA...
it is going to be interesting...
my point of view... art piece by MBW i liked was the boxer... would have been interested in getting if situation was better for me last year... other prints he has done i am hit and miss... am i going to kick myself if revealed banksy behind mr brainwash.... not really...
im hoping be comical take on what has happened past few years... show dont need degree in arts to be successful and dont need to be the brightest of sparks to make it...
would like it to be how mass media jumps on bandwagon at the 11th hour and promotes then looks for every reason to knock down any chance they get afterwards...
if it is a film which tends to take side of what MBW done honestly be little gutted... would like it to be Mr B take on things and how crazy things can get.... as artist MBW maybe some people dislike everything does but to document so many hours i have to give respect.. after that and what done since not for me to make decision on... some people purchased his art pieces others didnt...
dont think it will be banksy/shep saying we created this person because honestly will hurt there market share... im looking to see something different but dont know what it is... i guess closest companion would be hirst doing auction taking away the galleries supporting him and seeing blind panick of those galleries purchasing his art pieces to keep art pieces they own to a reasonable financial level....
hope it is about how fickle art pieces are to be honest.... someone with no background in arts and how they can get caught up in the hype and make something of themselves... if documentary showcases how anyone can go out there and produce art work and luck being involved to be successful i think great message to send out...
no doubt going to find buyer who will over take little miss sunshine for the 10 million or whatever they paid but im more interested in hidden meanings in the documentary if there is any...
can i say november time thought something was happening i dont know but after it comes out easy to say i noticed this and that...
thank banksy well only me dface first liked then saw this forum but thankful opened my eyes to what has been going on... would love footage showing up of the hirst auction but truth havent seen the screener yet...
silly but i am kinda happy film coming out but then sad because i really wanted to see what romanywyg did... sorry if spelled that wrong ! first time i met him had opportunity to be backed producing something but honestly i was more interested in buying the art of people could afford...
romanywyg im actually hoping footage is included but more hoping keeping independant that you produce film that you have worked so hard on last few years... im still hoping private showing once ready ...lol...
we can guess and say going to reveal so much but all i can say does it matter if reveals who he is... most on here who post for last few years no! .... im actually hoping look at the film and find some beautiful humour....
easy enough to say thought this was going to happen after this film been released but people talked about MBW and MR B interested in footage before...
is it going to make your collection of Mr B shoot up in price... maybe for short while at art auctions but on ebay or here no ! reason being no one has the money... is it going to kick start what was going on in 2008 with prices have to say my opinion no... reminds me if people think this way of the stimulas package states and china etc did...enjoy the film for what it is.... enjoy fact get to see mr B put up art pieces which we have grown to love etc and to see what graff artists go though to put up there art pieces... there will be some who say i risk more than artist showcased putting up art pieces but liked to believe that is the point...
dont think be Mr B saying part of some big boys club with shep but hope message would be anyone can do it.... probably on my own and people want answers but if i can watch and laugh then will be happy.... dont really care if he says who he is etc and truth if he gives view point of current street graff appreciate but until i actually see footage not going to blindly follow and say yes to everything that he says...
i know probably most important thread on here in the last year with people following but dont get to far ahead of yourselves thinking going to release all this information.. fantastic if he does and nice to see his view point on the chapman brothers etc but not expecting it... enjoy to people that go view..s

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by mishco on Jan 21, 2010 22:39:04 GMT 1, Doesn't this idea that MBW is Banksy....well...benefit Brainwash if he's not Banksy? I mean, how many flippers or others will take a gamble thinking this may be the case and buy some MBW before "it's too late" or before prices go UP? I'm definitely not sure about the whole idea, but surely some people will buy MBW based on that.
why would they buy it anyway, banksy became famous because his images are thought provoking and humerous. MBW stuff is neither and is utter s**te IMO...more fool those who actually buy it up. i wouldn't buy the paper it's printed onto.
so people are buying it because the person behind the print MAY be banksy.....am i missing something here....
It's like buying a lada with a porsche engine in it for £40k It's still a heap of shite on the face of things so you wouldn't buy it.

OH...so people buy stuff sometimes they don't like just for it's potential value, financial returns??
I don't know why you question that, isn't it obvious?
All I say is that as people are like that, you can imagine some will buy hoping their MBW will end up being a Banksy.

I wish it would go back to buying what I liked and just for the image. I really cant remember when that was, as you know I loved Mr B back in 02, but now my mind is fucked, the last print I truly loved was Parla St. Giles. I think we all grow up? Maybe!!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Deleted on Jan 21, 2010 23:32:56 GMT 1, bit lazy so don't read all 4 pages.. but I'm pretty curious about the fact if Banksy has any copyright on this movie.. it would be nice and banksy-esque (horrible term) to say f**ck to all the cinema's and post a (Removed) on the same date as the premiere..
it would be a nice way to generate more debate in the freedom of data..

Their styles are pretty different, and the quality of ideas. It could be that they helped establish him as an artist as a test. All speculation. Fun though isn't it!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by eyectopus on Jan 22, 2010 0:07:51 GMT 1, Artstylee I agree with you about the "B" in the signatures. It sounds like conspiracy type stuff, but when I saw a MBW print for the 1st time, the signature jumped out at me as being slightly like Banksys, I put it down to MBW copying the style. Even if Banksy was behind MBW would he be signing it himself though?

He'll keep us up to date and my guess is he'll be touching down somewhere in Utah in the next few hours. Good luck you nutter!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Daniel Silk on Jan 22, 2010 1:30:54 GMT 1, On my iPhone from Sundance. Banksy piece on main street is awesome. So I hate how many times I've had to clear up misinfo. Seth Carmichael hosted a panel with Shepard Fairey at Bonhams. He made it pretty clear what went on with this footage. I didn't know what Thierry did prior to documentaries. I first met him and knew his limited street work in 2007. He mostly stenciled an image of himself holding a video camera. At that event that happened post his 2008 LA show, Shep said the following ( 1-5) the rest are facts from me. 1) MBW was producing / filming / shooting a documentary on street art. He approached Shep before Banksy. Shep introduced him to Banksy. Sheps own words. Bonhams may have filmed it. 50 people were in the audience, and ei think Charming Baker was on the panel. 2) MBW had footage which confirmed Banksys ID. 3) Shep expressed that both he and Banksy were annoyed that Thierry / MBW never did anything with the documentary and basically weaseled his way into graffiti art. I would characterize Shep as both dismissive & a bit exasperated with how Thierry essentially represented himself as a filmmaker, used both him and Bansky, and then dropped everything and started to try to be an artist. Shep said it diplomatically - this was a while ago so pardon my lack of quotable specificity. 4) Per Shep, Banksy bought the footage from MBW and intended to finish it himself. 5) Also randomly from Shep, MBW is a cousin of Invader. I recall this had something to do with how he got access. 6) I can confirm that MBW produces his prints and much of his art independently of Banksy. Both through video evidence, reports from people who visited his studio, photographic evidence, etc. He does rely extensively on assistants. 7) MBW provides in his Carson Daly interview what he says is a copy of a 10 point plan to being a successful artist. 8) MBW the people who produced his LA show were many of the same people who produce for Banksy. This show was highly produced and relatively unoriginal save for a few pieces. No, It would have been physically impossible for MBW to produce all those pieces. It was alleged at the time that MBW even delegated the conceptualization of pieces to others. I have more facts, but by way of opinion, it does not sound as though a documentary by Mr. B of MBW that's going to be a commentary on the comodification of Modern Art is going to be flattering to MBW. If your concern is MBW prices, there is no such thing as bad publicity. <more to follow, I'm on mobile>
On my iPhone from Sundance. BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by rosstierney on Jan 22, 2010 2:21:32 GMT 1, i can't stop thinking about the endless possibilities. banksy of all people knows how negative publicity can result in positivity so why would he out brainwash for being a pleb? obviously banksy isn't brainwash but what if banksy was his puppeteer? e-mailing him all the images with instructions etc. oh i don't know. one thing's for sure though, imagine having a brainwash on your wall. i think i've just erupted a little bit of sick.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by raiden on Jan 22, 2010 3:07:42 GMT 1, Couple other points:
Both Shep & Banksy have aided MBW in his career. Shep provided him with permission to buff Banksy's rat on Melrose to promote the LA show (Shep has an agreement with the shopkeeper) Shep also DJ'd the LA show. Shep said he was not responsible for the documentary, and that it was Banksy's thing.
Banksy supposedly recommended the people to put together the LA show for MBW.
I can confirm MBW is not a puppet of Banksy. The furthest you could go is "Creation" of Banksy, in the sense that William Hung is a creation of American Idol & its producers. So in a sense,i think this film may suggest MBW is produced by Banksy, but but that takes away from MBW... Who legitimately failed his way to the top through innuendo and a very weird modern art culture that Banksy deftly comments on.
MBW may be the living manifestation of Banksy's "I can't believe you Morons buy this shit.". Just now in film.
As for MBWs prices... I've been warning people for two years that this documentary will likely make MBW appear as the Chance Gardiner of the art world, by centering on an eccentric guy like Thierry whose passion always supeceeded his talent, and who is in some ways the starfucker become star through a self feeding hype machine, so choked in overdrive, it became impervious to substance.
Is there a danger of this being the end of the road to MBW now that the man behind the curtain is revealed?
It cuts both ways...
For one, Banksy is behind the curtain to some degree, always has been in the form of wild and totally untrue rumor that once went so far as to say they were one and the same...
Lots of people knew this documentary would come out some day. And certainly speculation fed a wild speculative market unseen before where MBW went from a lowly, unknown street artist as late as early 2008 to an artist with the biggest show of that year, who then produced the more prints than almost any artist in 2009, save for maybe Shep, and did the cover of Madonnas lowest selling album.
All while most serious art critics, and even some of the very people behind him considered him a joke.
But knowing Thierry personally, you can't help but like him. And what makes most sense about this doc is that Thierry is the perfect loveable loser because he doesn't care.
Where does that leave his art prices post this documentary?
First, as much buzz as this will generate, it will likely see only very limited theatrical release - possibly UK, LA, NY - then probably get picked up by HBO. Not numbers to bat an eye at in terms of publicizing MBW.
The Daniel Johnston Doc was a big buzz generator, and doubled the price of his work, only for them to settle down to a ho hum level.
This seems like it will be like no doc ever before because it (most likely from what I've heard and can surmise) is essentially a reality version of "Being There" set in the art world with MBW as the protagonist.
In a sense, all publicity is good publicity. But for those wondering about the prices of MBW prints, I say is relatively massive publicity of MBW as a loveable character who is depicted in the sense "I can't believe you morons by this shit" a good thing or a bad thing?
But what do I know. I could watch it after being an obsessed observer of this strange drama and find out that the biggest idiot of all was myself. And Rhys sits quoting my posts laughing about how I was the most mislead of them all.
I still hope to go to the Sunday preem. Got tickets for Wednesday. DM me, love to meet up.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by chief on Jan 22, 2010 3:46:59 GMT 1, banksy hit up shepard and asked if he knew of good places to paint in LA since banksy getting caught would spoil everything. shepard knew a guy who owned many properties and would oblige to let banksy paint on his properties' walls. that person turned out to be mr brainwash who eventually got footage of banksy and that's all I know really but it seems like "brainwash" has been manipulating his way into the art world using the footage as leverage. personally I think his art is shit. though I do admit the michael jackson pieces made out of records at the ron english/opera gallery show were his best work yet. looking forward to seeing the film surely
