Banksy in San Francisco, by Hanging Around on Apr 23, 2010 10:59:08 GMT 1, what do people think of the hand painted elements in the 'peace+love' and 'this will look good when framed'? its pretty messy compared to the usual symbolism/typography, could he be working with someone else in a bit to get the stencils up quicker?

Banksy in San Francisco, by Happy Shopper on Apr 23, 2010 14:59:50 GMT 1, Both very nice. I like the idea of Peace and Love needing a check up in San Francisco.
I do wonder whether the symbols were already there, and he just added the doctor?

Banksy in San Francisco, by Wearology on Apr 23, 2010 15:37:09 GMT 1, The figure looks like he reused the face portion of the cromagnam man stencil that he used on the side of the theatre in LA last year. It doesn't look like a boy or a girl - it almost looks like the monkey mask that is in the glass enclosure next to Mr. B during the naaration of the movie.

Banksy in San Francisco, by wilfsboy on Apr 23, 2010 16:20:43 GMT 1, and being from manchester you'd know this ?! guess banksy must have spent weeks looking for a heart he could finaly add his piece to ;D Didn't claim to know anything, which is why I said "Think" Just believe Banksy's can control is better than shown in the peace sign and heart, why cut a perfect stencil, then make a mess of the other part.
I "think" it was meant to look like it was there from before....

Banksy in San Francisco, by wilfsboy on Apr 23, 2010 16:31:15 GMT 1, Only thing for me is that there are WAY better places to paint than those spots throughout SF (I'd lived in Sf for 20 years until recently)... . I guess he was staying in the Mission and whoever he was with showed him some places, but those spots seem so sad for a Banksy in SF. Nonetheless, it's great to see them, and I'm so happy they're there. On another note, in response to an earlier post in the thread, I think the "this'll look nice when it's framed" is a response to his public pieces taken down and sold (Chrismas in LA), NOT about his prints. I believe absolutely that Banksy continues to make his prints available so that "people" are actually able to own and appreciate them (and yes ALSO OF COURSE for $ himself and $ for his gallery folks). But in that vein, he could take a very different and twisted route, which he hasn't. His sticking with POW for so many years is remarkable, IMO absolutely admirable and is inspiring. POW is probably the best gallery I've ever dealt with... In this world "street art," from Gagosian to Deitch, to Ace...The way POW (and he, through POW) treat their patrons & fans is better than almost any gallery I have ever dealt with (the Luggage store in Sf is amazing, and I suspect the Charley Edwards/Pure Evil gallery is on the up-n-up. ). But very sincerely... For the "power" POW holds, and the many years they've been in the game while always maintaining their integrity, they are incredible. They've never balked on integrity... Or at least, I've never seen them waver since I've started with them in 2003. Dora's not an automation; she's a human being, and she treats people as human beings. The grey Nola last year(?) is a perfect example of the gallery communicating with the artist about a genuine gallery/customer problem... And the artist and gallery sorting it out together to solve the problem. To me, that's a big deal. It would have been so easy for them to say "Um, we're VERY sorry, and here's your $ back." But between the artist (Banksy) and the gallery (POW) they bent themselves to make it right. That's why Nola Grey is one of the most important Banksy prints to me. I won't name the gallery or artist (but this is in LA)... I've been waiting for a gallery piece I've already bought/paid for for over 7 months... I was supposed to pick it up last October (actually I did, but they gave me a different piece). I let them know immediately... They've NEVER emailed or called to say what's up. I get vague apologies when I email or call. And this is a major artist, and a major gallery. It's just become ridiculous and sad. They're much higher profile than POW and I guarantee, I'll /never/ give them my $ again. POW, no problem. I believe they're one of the best and most honest galleries in the world.
I agree....POW are the nuts....but we know that.. maybe you should name the poor printers to stop more people getting mugged off..

After seeing the close-up pictures of the other piece, "think" you may be right, the writing is very similar.
Surely the 'this'll look good' piece, is not meant to look like the writing was there before, yet still has the poor/messy freehand bits. If anything, it detracts from the piece.

Banksy in San Francisco, by disclizard on Apr 23, 2010 17:50:29 GMT 1, I'm crossing my fingers for a print of the Peace and Love Check-Up... I like "PARK" in LA, but I don't think it would translate into a print as well as Peace and Love.

Banksy in San Francisco, by brittbritt on Apr 23, 2010 22:28:35 GMT 1, FROM ARRESTED MOTION:
Signs posted next to the stencil sounds kinda strange in Chinese, like it might have been translated on google translate or something. So were they placed by Banksy or the police?
The signs read: "Please, before you remove this graffiti, rumors are that police are investigating, please wait until next week or the end of April."
I'll bet Banksy put them there to get the neighbors to pay attention and keep their eyes on it... Or, maybe a fan put them there?

SF has a law where a building owner can be fined if there's graffiti left on their building, and in some areas, it's regularly enforced. So it's possible that the signs were posted by someone wanting time to get the city to approve the piece to stay before it's buffed or the owners are fined... Just from the pic (of the full corner), you can see how often that spot gets repainted. My guess is that the sign was left for the owners.
I'd thought that the piece was in the Mission district until I saw the full pic of the corner in Chinatown. I might be there next week for a bit, I hope they stay up...

Banksy in San Francisco, by Coach on Apr 24, 2010 0:43:53 GMT 1, Another piece to promote the film? Not sure its such a good idea to do these new pieces and let them appear so clearly to be just about promoting the film. What do you think?
What!! The guy cant win! These look fabulous to me. Sure the guy is gonna hit to coincide with the film. Why not? c
